Summary: underestimate not the intelligence of children
Review: coraline is indeed a wickedly clever little tale. it's not a lenghty work, suitable for the market it targets. many parents think that coraline is pretty scary for their kids, but i think not excessively so. in fact, it's not a story meant to scare the pants of children, but one that teaches them to face their fears rationally, and even develop a healthy sense of respect for it.

coraline is a girl who just moved in to an old, rambling house that was converted into apartments. bored senseless, she began exploring the surroundings, and was introduced to the various off-beat characters that live there. these things she can handle, but what about the place beyond the locked door in her apartment?

as most of gaiman's work, the world of coraline is both real and surreal. he made it possible for readers to emphatize with coraline, and portrayed the child-parent relationship with finesse and insight. most importantly, he shows adults how perceptive and resourceful children can be, and shows children that parents aren't necessarily indifferent towards their kids.

as an adult, i find the book enchanting and peppered with delicious ironies. this is a work that can be enjoyed on many levels; children will enjoy the tale of how the heroine in the face of adversity, while adults will perhaps find the inner child they lost.

delightful.

Summary: Spooky and engrossing-- will keep you awake!
Review: I downloaded this onto my ipod for a long journey (there wasn't a category for that on Amazon, but presumably it's the same basic version as the audiotape, since Gaiman read it...)

I'd only read one other Neil Gaiman book, which i enjoyed enough to check this out. Wow! He's an amazing reader fo his own work... his gentle British accent throws the sheer spookiness of the altered everyday world into high relief. And made some of Coraline's speeches very funny, as when having been saved from an awful fate by the mysterious cat she replies with mere politeness, though out of breath and terribly relieved.

The rats dancing under the bed about how they will be here when you fall ("you" meaning humanity i think) were sung in speeded up, distorted little voices that were... haunting... to say the least! It's rare that after listening to an audiobook i feel like reading the book too but i did.. haven't gotten around to it yet but i will.

Gaiman's knowledge of mythology and monsters is wide-ranging, to say the least... (the other book I read was American Gods) so i don't know if "she," the Other Mother next door, is based on a real malevolent spirit. but it certainly felt as if she did.

This is a great thriller/horror story in which all of the characters and scenes are vivid and clear, not just the baddies but Coraline's family-- her distracted father and ordinary, loving mother-- the neighbors in the apartment building, including an eccentric old man training mice for a circus (who turns out to be a lot less crazy than Coraline thinks), the old ladies who used to be on the stage. And their doubles are hilarious-- at first benignly and then... not.

Coraline's portrayal is marvelous too. She's plucky and bright-- much brighter than one might think-- that is to say, the narrative is matter-of-fact and though it's Coraline's pov, we don't realize just HOW bright she is until she puts her plans into action. Gaiman wastes no time on introspection or revealing her plans ahead of time-- which is a great strategy. Coraline is rather classic "still waters run shrewd."

Original, complete and highly recommended!

Review: This book is about an adventurous girl that enters a parallel world and then becomes a captive of what looked like her mother. This book is a great book, because it has suspense, adventure and interesting characters. I am rating this book 5, because I could some times relate to the character.
I could relate to Coralline, because she is fun, loves animals, and thinks on her feet. When I really broke down the story I pictured the talking cat like her other side how she thinks the cat killing the mouse was horrible, however when she was tricking "the other mother" she was thinking on her feet and she was kind of sly. So I would love for other people to think about what I said and maybe read the book. Thank you.

Summary: Surprisingly Terrifying and Epic
Review: Gaiman does it again, reaching now for a different and seemingly lost genre, the dark fairy tale. This book is certainly the most chilling children's book I have ever read. I shivered as Coraline turned each dark corner to uncover another unfortunate misadventure.

Gaiman's love for dark fairy tales that he was told as a child bleeds through in this story. Coraline is a modern day Alice, unlocking a forbidden door rather than falling down a rabbit hole. And her white rabbit is simply her own childish curiosity. The book is also typical horror as Coraline constantly ignores the plea, "Don't go in there."

The defining moment in the book is when Coraline is talking with a black cat, reflecting on an incident in which her and her father stumbled on a swarm of wasps and her father protected her, taking 39 stings of his own, Coraline only suffering one. In the commotion, her father had dropped his glasses. He decided later to return for them. "He said he wasn't scared when he was standing there and there were wasps stinging him and hurting him... Because he knew he had to give me enough time to run. And he said that wasn't brave of him... It wasn't brave because he wasn't scared: it was the only thing he could do. But going back again to get his glasses, when he knew the wasps were there, when he was really scared. That was brave." (58-59)

This memory parallels Coraline's decision to rescue her parents from the terrible "other mother" (whose frightening disposition and macabre intentions send chills up even this adult reader's spine), regardless of her own knowledge of how dangerous a quest it would be.

Though I would not read this book to my 3 year old, it is super scary storytelling for young adults and a dark fantasy to be enjoyed by adults, as well. Gaiman is great!

Review: Dear Reader,
I would recommend Coraline because, I am the kind of person that likes creepy, adventure novels. Maybe even mystery books, and Coroline was definetly a little bit of each. If you are the kind of person that likes scary books (especilly at night) than Coraline is the book for you. Having the lights off while reading it makes it good, because when lights are off it usally makes you freaked out. There are parts of the book in Coraline which reminds me of the movie, The Shining.

P.1

In this book, Coraline first moves into a new home. She lives with weird people. When she checked out her new home, she found a door that had a brick wall behind it. The two elder women downstairs gave Coraline a rock with a hole in it for good luck because her tea leaves said that danger would come soon. Coraline goes through the door with the brick wall behind it, and she finds her Other Mother, and her Other Father. They have buttons for eyes. They say that if Coraline lived with them than her real parents they'll love her. She disagrees, and goes back to the real world. Her parents are gone for a few days, and Coraline expects that the other mother took them. She goes back in to find them. She meets three other children, their souls trapped in the Other Mother's world. Coraline has to help them find their souls. The other mother and Coraline bet each other that Coraline can find all the souls and her parents. She bets her eternity with the other mother, and the other mother bets her good right hand. The search begins. Coraline successfully finds all the people, with the help of a black cat. She even managed to kill the Other Mother. When they get out, the Other Mother's right hand was looking for the black key that can open the door. She successfully traps it in the almost bottomless well in the backyard with the black key. She had freed the souls, and saved her parents.

I like this book. It was scary and thrilling at the same time. In the book it quotes, "I'm going back for them because they are my parents." That shows that Coraline was brave to go back to the Other Mother's world. She did that because she knew that even though she was scared, she had to go save her parents. That was brave. She is a very brave person. The black cat seemed to ask why she's going in, and Coraline told him the story that told of her father's bravery when she was young. He had stayed at the bottom of the hill when the wasps attacked them. He gave Coraline a chance to run away, and when he ran away he accidentally dropped his glasses. He went back to get them knowing that the wasps were still there.

"You'll be fine, said Coraline.¡±Everything's going to be fine." These quotes in the book show that even though she's scared, she has her heart to guide and protect her. I liked this part because it was the part that the black cat had caught the mouse to help Coraline when she was in need the most. The cat didn't like catching rats, but Coraline needed help, so he helped her. This part shows friendship and caring for each other. The black cat really liked her, but he pretended that he didn't care about her at all. He likes to torture rats, but Coraline says that it's too mean.

My favorite part in this book was when she defeated the Other Mother. She threw the cat at her. The cat got scared, and it started scratching the Other Mother. Black, goopy things started to pour out of the Other Mother. At that part, Coraline quickly grabbed the snow globe, which the parents were captured in. At this part, Coraline runs out the door, since she had convinced the Other Mother that her parents were in there, and closed the door. She quickly locked it with the key. This part was breath taking.

Summary: The chilling tale of Coraline
Review: This is the first time EVER that I have read ANYTHING by Neil Gaiman. I bought the book because it had a creepy cover and I liked the book description. Having never read any books by him, I was not sure what I would find. What I found was complete eye candy! I absolutely LOVED reading this book. I read it in one hour and then when I was finished, I started reading it again. This book gave me chills, especially, the description of the "other" peoples' button eyes. This book was well illustrated but my imagination took me to those dark places all too well.

This book is great...I highly recommend it and it is not only for children. So many childrens books these days are not only intended for children. This is one of them.

You can be sure, I will be buying other books by this author. I am glad I happened upon him. It is not every day that one comes upon such an imaginative author such as Neil Gaiman.
