Rating: Summary: Cure For Insomnia! Review: Yes, that's right, if you happen to suffer from insomnia this is the book for you. I got about halfway through it about 9 months ago and it's been sitting on my shelf since then.Besides starting out slow, it becomes almost rediculously comical in the way the characters get more and more outrageous in their behavior. I realize that Stephen King novels are based on the 'make believe' however, I enjoyed most of his other books' eeriness; Insomnia is just crazy and laughable. I recommend skipping this one and going on to one of his other good books like The Shining, Misery, or Christine.
Rating: Summary: Mesmerizingly delightful... Review: It was a wonderful change from the norm of Stephen King; it's right up there with The Tommyknockers as one of King's best works. It makes you think and leaves you with a feeling of awe at Mr. King's prolific talent. It is not horror; it is not gore; it is a simple, well-told story of recapturing youth and innocence. King has gradually advanced from master of the shocking to now being a masterful storyteller.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLANT Review: This book is so amazing and spellbinding. Very thick (800 pages) it takes awhile but it's worth it. The ending almost had me in tears
Rating: Summary: My favorite book Review: I love this book. I've read it sooooo many times, i can remember little tiny details. In response to the person in Provo, Utah, I wonder if they ever passed 2nd grade. 6th months? pleasssssssse. they gotta be kidding. Lots of people said they loved the book, but the first section was slow. I totally disagree(not about it being good, obviously) the first part and the part where ralph thinks he is going crazy are the BEST parts. THey are so realistic you will find yourself looking around wondering if it could be true. The other people in my english class said so, too!
Rating: Summary: This is the first Stephen King book that I couldn't finish. Review: I tried. I really did. This book just couldn't hold my interest. I read about half of it and gave up. Read The Green Mile, Hearts in Atlantis, It, Carrie, or any other King book before you read this one!
Rating: Summary: The D*mn thing sat there for 3 years before I picked it up. Review: When I was younger, I saw a big, inflated ad for IT. The green claw grasping through the sewer grating grabbed my curiosity and squeezed. I asked for, and received, it for Christmas (I was twelve, how's that for a children's story?). I loved the thing. The next Christmas, I got everything Stephen King had ever published. Half of it was great. Half of it could have lured flies from a three-day-old corpse. Every time he wrote something, I got it for Christmas. After the astonishingly bad Tommyknockers I stopped reading them. Eventually, my family noticed, and stopped buying them for me. A few years later, he published Desperation and The Regulators at the same time. They both sounded interesting, but I couldn't bring myself to buy them. I mean, after all, TOMMYKNOCKERS!! A few weeks ago, I saw hardback copies of Desperation and The Regulators in the overstock bin at Waldenbooks for under $5.00 each. Well, I bought 'em, read 'em, and loved 'em. So I went ahead and read Insomnia. This book is not for everyone. There is character development out the wazoo, and some people cannot handle quite that much. After all, some people thought Michael Mann's film Heat was too long. About 200 - 250 pages goes by before the main plot kicks in. I know what you're thinking, "Michael Moorcock could tell the history of the multiverse in 250 pages." Well, Michael Moorcock never had characters that felt this real. Face it, Stephen King is not successful because of his fast-paced, plot-driven narratives. Stephen King is successful, because of the details, and characters so thought out, you forget they're not real. I liked it a lot.
Rating: Summary: For those who take stock in these reviews: Review: I just wanted to say that you really need to read the Dark Tower books before you get to this one. If you don't read these books (The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands, Wizard in Glass) or at least one or two, you just won't have a clue what's going on and you'll think it's boring and you'll give up. If you see this book as what it is, namely a big bunch of exposition into the inner workings of the Dark Tower series, it will be compelling and the end will make you cry (at least, I did). Just a hint from a huge fan.
Rating: Summary: "4 1/2 stars really..." Review: Generally, I try to be as original as possible, but this time i am going to have to refer to " a reader from Moncton, New Brunswick." The "reader" and I share a lot in common (as far as our analysis of this novel goes). It took me a while to get started but as "Mr. Moncton" so artfully puts it (paraphrasing now) the book needs the first 200 pages and and through those first 200 pages one idetifies and (most importantly) cares about the characters. If the reader has enough patience (something all of the "one star" voters seriously lack) to get through the first 200 pages, while not entirely the smae style as we are used to from SK, the book certainly picks up the pace. This definitely ranks among my SK favorites. When you finish it you will be glad you read it.
Rating: Summary: I Skipped to the End.... Review: to find out what happened. I began reading this book when I received it for Christmas in 1995. This is the first Stephen King book I could not finish. It was so slow. Finally I gave up and read the ending. Even though his books are usually about things that are not real, he writes in a way that makes you think they are real. Not this time. Usually I pass my books onto my mother, but this time I told her not to even bother reading.
Rating: Summary: 4 and 1/2 Stars, really... Review: Ralph Roberts, now there's a name I'll remember. We've been through a lot, Robert and I (oh, around 787 pages, I'd say), and I don't regret one moment. Sure, the first 200 pages aren't your typical Stephen King book, but I don't see this story NOT having those pages! Mr. King actually took a long time to set up his characters, and with good reason: you end up giving a damn about them, you feel their joy and echo their sorrow. But after around 200 pages, ahh, that's where the adventure really begins, when Ralph Roberts, who has been sleeping less and less, starts to see auras around everything. Just when you think that you have it pretty much figuered out, Mr. King throws you a nice curve ball and surprises you again. Not really a horror book, but an amazing read. Oh, and if you've read King's Dark Tower series, you are in for a special treat! Oh, and don't listen to the one star reviews, they must not of had the patience to get through the first 200 pages. 4 and a half stars!!
