Rating: Summary: Exceeded expectations! Review: This was my first King book to read, and I was very surprised. I had expected a scary, nightmare inducing read, but this was amazing. It was spooky (I wouldn't say scary,) mysterious, and heartwarming. You cannot help but fall in love with the characters throughout this 780 pg. book. I read some reviews about a slow start, but I have to disagree. I thought it was an excellent way to set the stage for the highly imaginitive plot that was to unfold. I would love to read another book with the same characters! If anyone can recommend a Stephen King book that comes anywhere near to the plot or the writing style in Insomnia, please email!
Rating: Summary: Another suspenseful winner Review: This book was up to King's usual standards: creepy, twisted, and occasionally confusing...in a good way, of course. The book sported one major flaw, though: it was a very slow starter. It was a typical roller-coaster ride; the only problem was that the first third of the ride was buckling up, signing waivers, and writing living wills. The second is that first big hill: climbing slowly up, the suspense building inch by inch. And the final third, which was all too short, features the twists, turns, and loops that are so undeniably Stephen King. The story is one of Ralph Roberts, a 70-something widower who waits as insomnia whittles away his sleep, minutes at a time. This takes up quite a while, as we are with him through it all. Then, apparently as a result of sleep-deprivation, he is introduced into "hyper-reality," what he calls the world of auras. Then he starts to see little men, who are none other than the three Fates of Greek mythology (the gender issue is conveniently thrust aside). But he can't be crazy, because what he sees really happens...and someone else is seeing it too. Seeing as the people of Derry are recruited for a Purpose that no "Short-Timer" can fathom. King mentions random works of literature in Insomnia: Lord of the Rings, The Lady or the Tiger, etc. But what he most enjoys is tying the novel to his own works, creating a web of storylines that, I only hope, will one day be resolved through another current series, called Gunslinger. I recommend this series as a companion to Insomnia, because not only is Roland mentioned briefly in the reviewed work, but the Tower itself comes into play...and to understand that (to a point), one must read the Gunslinger books. Insomnia is not a quick read, but a rewarding one all the same.
Rating: Summary: Could not get through it!! Review: I am sorry, I truly think that King is an extremely talented writer and a gifted human. But what was he thinking with this one? I really did try, it took me six months to get 1/2 through it and I finally gave up! Please don't waste your time on this one!!
Rating: Summary: Insomnia - WOW Review: Having read pretty well all of the stephen king books this one has to be in the top two or three.(Excluding the Dark Tower Series)Some may find it a little hard to get into but the character development is essential. Its many twists and turns, together with links to the Dark Tower, make this book no cure for "insomnia" as it will keep you up all night reading.
Rating: Summary: Slow beginning.......Powerful ending. Review: The story starts out a little on the sluggish side but you soon realize that it is necessary as King establishes realistic characters. This fantastic story takes the common disorder of Insomnia and puts a twist on it that few people would ever think of.....that is why Stephen King is a one of a kind writer. There are parts of this story that are somewhat confusing but I promise you that the ending will clear everything up....at least, it did for me. This is not a short-read but at book's end it is definitely satisfying when you finish it.
Rating: Summary: One of his best! Review: A truly fabulous work of art from the beloved, Stephen King. I have read most of his work and have yet to find a more in depth and mind twisting book than Insomnia. A fabuolus read, and I would recommend Insomnia to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing as hell Review: The generalizations that King makes toward the pro life movement stinks. He characterizes all pro-lifers as evil and insane, while making all others angelic. Gimme a break King, leave your politics out of your books. Aside from that, the allusions to the dark tower themes were well placed. An otherwise intesteting book packed with worn out political issues.
Rating: Summary: Hate to do it...but it's a 3 1/2 really... Review: Can't say that I totally hated INSOMNIA, but also can't say that I recommend it to other people. It was very interesting with lots of likable characters and such...but it just wouldn't get to it! Sure the ending is crazy like all Stephen King endings, but it took forever to get there. The storyline is a good, well-thought out one with interesting turns to it. King creates a wonderful cast of real and likable characters caught in a mess of insomnia, violence, and abortion. This is a good book, it just took me a long time to read. Sometimes you have to patient with it, in the end something DOES happen. What I liked best about the ending was that it did not just end abruptly. There was an ending, and then the epilouge was a whole other ending altogether and it really made the book worth it. Very nice.
Rating: Summary: Insomnia Review: As this was the second book by Stphen King i read (the first beeing bloody, high body count and rather scary "Desperation"). I was rathyer disappointed with this book, as i thought it would be a bloodfest, but later on my mind has grown, and a few weeks back i read it again and i thought that this was a rather exeptioanl work of art. With one of the most original plots i've ever seen (old people cutting ballon strings) he managed to twist it in to an extremely entertaining work, and putting a 70 year old man in the lead was a great twist from the usally young and healthy Heroes
Rating: Summary: One of the better ones I've read........ Review: When I first started reading this book I was kind of lost, therefore, I was a little frustrated but I kept at it. It ended up being one of the best King books I have read! The book starts off with main character Ralph Roberts losing his wife to cancer. He begins to experience insomnia, thinking it must be because of the grief he is experiencing from his wife's death. But then he begins to see these auras around people: some bright and beautiful others black and deadly looking. On one of his late night awakenings he notices two little bald doctors coming out from his neighbor's house across the street. This sparks some fear but mainly curiosity which gets him involved deeper than he had planned. It begins the great journey of jumping in between the real and supernatural world, telepathy and the great lengths that people will go to to save someone else. What I really liked about the book was that I caught two references to different books that King wrote. He mentions Gage Creed from 'Pet Semetary' and towards the end he mentions that things in the sewer in Derry have an unfortunate way of showing back up (referencing 'It'). It is always amazing to me how King manages to throw those little things in! At times the book gets a tad uninteresting but all in all it was a great book. The ending really made up for any monotonous sections. I almost cried at the end even! Ralph Roberts is a true hero! If you like King you will definitely like Insomnia.
