Summary: Lock and Load
Review: In The Fixer, author Jon F. Merz doesn't spend 10 pages of flowery purple prose describing the texture of fabrics or every minute detail of a vampire's bedroom. There are no slow and boring build ups in which nothing happens for several chapters.

Jon F. Merz pulls the trigger of a starter pistol and BANG! The Fixer is off on a non-stop, action packed race. From the first page to the last.

The Fixer is about a vampire named Lawson with a special job: he's called a "Fixer." When vampires go against the rules set forth by the "Council," which governs vampires, Lawson "fixes" the problem. But when an old enemy named Cosgrove begins a bloody rampage with the intent of rising to world power and enslaving humans, Lawson has his work cut out for him. Cosgrove is the vampire who almost ended Lawsons career. And his life.

...For those of you who like comparisons, The Fixer is like Forever Knight meets Die Hard.

Summary: The Fixer/Lawson/Merz Rock!
Review: Meet Lawson, The Fixer. When Vampires step out of line, he's called to fix the problem.

Wow! Never mind the cover. Wow!

The Fixer, the first installment of a multi-book series, is a rip-roaring, action-packed thrill ride THAT NEVER LAGS.

Written in a hardbolied pulpish first person narrative voice, The Fixer mixes horror, action/adventure and thriller genres into one exciting new style. When I sat down to read the book - I kid you not -- I did not get back up until I'd finished the last page. With its satisfying blend of Vampire culture and mythology stuck into modern times, Merz sets up an interesting story and an interesting main character in Lawson. Not to mention a supernatural beast, a hitwoman named Talia, a vampire psychopath named Cosgrove, and a bad mother F'er named Zero. The whole cast shines.

I am eagerly waiting the second installment, The Invoker, due out in October '02.

Summary: Vamp Noir
Review: Take the underworld of the 40s film noir and mix it with the comic book Blade, and the result will be something that closely resembles Jon F. Merz's The Fixer. This books marks the promising start of a new series which will appeal to anyone who is tired of the goth-chique vampires of Anne Rice.

The novel is fast-paced and very atmospheric. You are thrown into the noir world which you saw so often in the 40s crime films. Lawson reminded me a little of the Bogarts of that era, only with more muscles and with a badder, more sarcastic attitude.

Although the books lags a little in its central part (Merz gives us too much background info on Lawson; he could have stretched it out over the next few books), the rest of a the book is great fun. The wry, sarcastic humour and the often funny situations elevates this book over the B-style novel it could easily have become.

The Fixer isn't mind blowing, but it is a great read that will keep you entertained until its very last page.

Summary: Absolutely Superb!
Review: The Fixer is probably one of the best novels I've read in a long time. Don't listen to these fools out here who give this book less than 5 stars - it's a fantastic read. Merz's perspective on vamps is probably the most original out in years. The Fixer is about Lawson, a sort of James Bond cynic with a job to do. In this book, he's up against Cosgrove, a bloodthirsty psycho who's made his life hell in the past. Along the way he hooks up with a deadly woman named Talya. Together, it's a non-stop rush to the finish. Merz's vamps aren't undead, there's no silly romantic goth crud in here - it's just non-stop action & adventure. Don't miss this book - it's sure to be a classic for years to come. If other reviewers had such a problem with this book, I'd love to see more details on what exactly they found wrong with it. But they won't because they're simply slamming a decent book without having read it at all.

Summary: A Terrific First Novel!
Review: THE FIXER marks an impressive debut from this Boston author. Vampires, spies, lust, it's got a bit of everything! The writing is smooth and fluid, so it makes for a very satisfying read. This book is a fun ride, and I can't wait til the next installment is published. I'm a forever fan!

Summary: A Great Read...
Review: The Fixer took me totally by surprise. Jon Merz has an unique style that hits me as toung-in-cheek. His writing style adds drama to simple exchanges between charaters, and the characters are larger than life. It didn't take long for me to get [drawn] into this one! The interaction between the characters is creative at times. As a Boston native, I found the setting impeccably portrayed. I recommend this book strongly. I'm not sure how this holds up within the genre, as I've never read a book such as this. I fully intend to buy The Invoker - out at the end of this year. You should too.

Summary: A Kick-Butt Awesome Adventure!
Review: The Fixer's the type of book you just can't go wrong with. It's got something for anyone - lots of action, snappy dialogue, a few chills, a little romance, and the best part is this is unlike any other vampire tale I've ever read. Merz has created a world populated by realistic heroes and villains - he makes the reader experience it all. A great novel - buy this book!!!!

Summary: This Vamp is a Problem-Solver!
Review: THE FIXER, by Jon F. Merz, is a fresh look at the eternal world of vampires. The protagonist of the story, Lawson, serves as a "Fixer" - born to the task of maintaining the delicate balance between the vampire and human communities, which are hopelessly entangled, yet essentially separate.

Together with the mysterious Talya, a former KGB assassin, Lawson battles Cosgrove, a power-crazy, rogue vampire who plans to invoke an ancient blood demon to help him shred the fabric of vampire society - and all of civilization.

Merz knows how to tell a story effectively. His style is refreshingly clean, richly textured, and unpretentious. The book is a delight to read and easy to follow, throughout story twists and fast action. His characters are well developed and believable; you'll care about what happens to them. Merz tells an excellent story, which is well-paced and nearly impossible to put down. He wraps this story in a time of gangsters and celebratory decadence, which rings true, making the end result both genuine and fanciful.

In a nutshell: THE FIXER is a great read and well worth the purchase price. It deserves a place on your bookshelf. Treat yourself to some fun.
