Rating: Summary: Very Good!!!! Review: 'The Heart of a Witch' was an excellent, EXCELLENT book! I would have given it a five star, except for the fact that some of the rituals in the book are down right disgusting. Any normal person wouldn't do that. Other that it was great.
Rating: Summary: Superb look at the Wiccan Review: Many of the smaller upstate New York towns are architecturally and demographically aging as they lose their young to the bigger cities. One exception to the rule is the very prosperous Green Hollow, which defies the laws of urbanization to the point that it seems magically protected by a spell of vitality. Within the town, one of the most revered and successful enterprises is the Lockley Arms Inn. This place becomes of immense curiosity and fascination to the teenage twins Kip and Shelly Davies, who live across the street from the facility. When they were younger, their parents forbid the siblings trespassing on the grounds of the inn. However, all that taboo does is increase the magnetism of the place and eventually the twins cross the line. After observing weird phenomena, the twins conclude that the locale hosts a coven of witches. The pack of witches accept Kip and Shelly as their apprentices. They quickly learn much knowledge about the benign Earth Goddess, but soon uncover the fact that a deadly malevolent force is at work. Meanwhile Wiccan-trained individuals such as Kip and Shelly must choose between the light and the dark sides, but those who go to the evil side can lose all they cherish and love. Judith Hawkes wrties a powerful story that proves that research pays (hopefully with a best seller) by providing readers with an insightful and realistic view of a religion typically misunderstood. THE HEART OF A WITCH makes even the most scientific thinking rationalist believe in the forces of magic. Some readers may be put off by passages that serve as a treatise on the Wiccan philosophy. However, most otherworldly fans will believe that is what turns this book into such a strong tale. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: The Heart of A Witch Review: A good friend gave me her copy to read and I just loved it. I am ordering it so I have my own copy to re-read again some day real soon. A great find!
Rating: Summary: Annoying to read & bad for witches Review: After reading the reviews here, I was really looking forward to this book. Instead, I had numerous problems with it and was very disappointed. I found very little to like or root for in the two main characters. All the others were extremely superficial and unsympathetic, some to the point that I never could put a character or visual to a name. I cared for none of them. Nor did I get any sort of feeling of place from the setting to ground me, though this could be skillfully done by others and would be important in a story depicting a nature religion. The ending was more annoying than anything else. The only reason I forced myself to finish the book was so I could feel better qualified to write this review. I can't imagine anyone calling this macabre and suspenseful. What really drove me to write this review was the need to tell others that this is NOT an accurate portrayal of modern Witchcraft. Oh, yes, all the holidays are here and the talk of the Goddess and rituals is done well enough. However, the consensus these days is that, unlike what happens in this book, no responsible coven will take on those who are underage as apprentices. This is especially not done without the knowledge of parents - whose roles are practically, and unrealistically, nonexistent in this book. The few covens that might allow those who are underage peripheral involvement in Craft activities would NOT allow participation in The Great Rite and other such goings on, as is found in this book. All talk of past lives and living outside society's norms be damned. As these events unfolded, I cringed at the thought of the Religious Right getting a hold of this book and adding it to their arsenal against Witches. To anyone who plans to read this, this is not an accurate portrayal of modern Witchcraft.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing and hard to read Review: Although I have always had a fascination with witchcraft and the occult and usually enjoy reading about it, I thought the heart of the book was a little insulting to my reading integrity. I am an avid reader and found the storyline to be very corny and idiotic at times. I found it hard to believe that the family of these two "sheltered type" kids would be so oblivious to what they were doing. I couldn't wait to finish the book. I was sorry I even started it.
Rating: Summary: Suspenseful and charming Review: although the characters are daringly unsympathetic, this is a thriller with real heart and suspense.
Rating: Summary: Read one, went right out and bought the other two!!! Review: As a 57 year old Wiccan, I bought "Heart of a Witch " and Loved IT! Went right out and bought her other two books and liked them also. This book IS propaganda for Wicca in the nicest possible way. I do not know who her teacher was, but Ms. Hawkes certaintly did a positive review of the craft. We are seldom treated so well. Enjoyed the entire story, keeping in mind it is mystery murder fiction. Looking forward for more. Is there a fan club?
Rating: Summary: On Target Wiccan Fiction!!! Review: As a Wiccan, I found this to be one of the most truly accurate portrayals of the Craft in a fiction novel. The characters were well-developed and the writing style poetic yet straightforward. One of the best books I have read in a long time. The ending was truly a surprise. A must read for everyone!
Rating: Summary: This book was excellent up untill the first Sabbat. Review: As I said above the book was excellent up untill the first sabbat, Then it became a farse. A Coven does have initations of a sort and each is diffrent! but none of which you have to learn the wiccan ways in one year and a day. I have been a Wiccan for 12 years and in a coven for 3 of them. A coven is a small organzation of people that finds hope in others, and can preform acts that they would not have orchestrated by them selves. A Coven finds power in any number not just 13! They find power in others because they put there love and trust is them! She takes the power of the Sabbats for granted, to lead the reader in a Fantasy. I found the ending disturbing as well, their must have been fifty ways to end the book and she had to have picked the worst one. I recommend this book to anyone intrested in a good read! But not for someone looking to find knowledge about are craft known as Magic. For those who in fact are looking for knowledge on wicca' I suggest any book by Silver Ravenwolf. her teachings are of expirence and truth, If you are interested in Solitary Practice, I recommend "Wicca a guide for the solitary practitioner" by Scott Cuningham.
Rating: Summary: A Captivating Book Review: Have you ever wondered what goes on at your neighbor's house? "The Heart of a Witch" tells the story of Kip and Shelley Davies. Kip and Shelley are twins who've always felt a connection with the Lockley Arms Inn across the street. Even in their childhood Kip and Shelley were fascinated with the Inn. They would always sneak over to investigate. As they get older, they get jobs at the Inn and spend most all their time there besides school. The story unfolds when the twins discover a secret and get pulled into it. The things that they went through changed their lives and their feelings. They could never go back to reality again. Judith Hawkes writes of supernatural happenings and paints a picture with her words. The life of Shelley and Kip with their strange world will captivate and pull you into the story. It will change the way you think about life, and not let you put it down until the last sentence.
