Rating: Summary: A great suprise! A fun read that makes you think twice... Review: Lip Service took me totally by suprise. Billed as erotica with a twist, M.J. Rose isn't just trying to make things steamy -- she delivers insights about men, marriage and relationships that is bound to ring true for a great many readers.
Rating: Summary: great first novel Review: very erotic, as well as very well-written . . . i now look forward to author's second book, though i think she will have a tough time topping this one!
Rating: Summary: A better read than airport novels Review: Lip Service is racier than a Jackie Collins' novel but still contains an intelligent plot that stops it from crossing the line into smut. It was a better read than many of the trashy novels I've picked up in beach houses and airports.
Rating: Summary: Intriguing story wraps the reader in till the end! Review: MJ Rose is an excellent and inspiring writer. Julia Sterling is reminiscient of Isadora Wing overcoming her "Fear of Flying".The novel is lyrical and exciting, drawing the reader in to the originally mundane life of Julia and rooting for her to overcome her loveless marriage and flies with her to her newfound freedom.
Rating: Summary: A great read!! Review: I very much enjoyed this book! So much so, that in 1 1/2 days I had it read! I especially related to Julia and her exploration of her sexuality. Women bury their sexual side too deep and this book shows, that with some imagination, all things are possible
Rating: Summary: Dumb beyond belief Review: How could a book with so many dirty words be so boring? How could this author take such an interesting premise (secret phone sex) and turn it into such a dumb plot? Why not read a detective book or two before writing this and learn something about the real world? Anybody who muttered Erica Jong or any other serious writer's name in comparison with this must be joking. I wish I'd read the reviews here before I bought this -- all the five star ones read like advertising hype, and the one star reviews read like real readers wrote them.
Rating: Summary: The issue of research in LIP SERVICE Review: Amazon kindly supplies this space to authors to comment. And that's terrific because readers reviewing books is challenging traditions and breaking new ground. One of the most difficult thing for an author - especially a first time author - is reading reviews. So for all the good ones - I want to thank the readers who have given me so much praise. The bad ones are important to me too ... how else can a writer write better next time. But I would like to take this opportunity to address the issue of my research which some reviews have questioned. In writing LIP SERVICE I worked with New York City Police Department and a top criminal lawyer who was once a NYPD detective. In addition I worked with three psychotherapists and six phone sex operators. Some aspects of LIP SERVICE's plot may be hard to believe, but they are based on fact.
Rating: Summary: A Seduction Review: I couldn't put this book down. It held me captive for a whole weekend. Its not quite like anything I've read before - erotic and engaging - about a woman who you don't think will win but does! Its insightful and thought provoking and I highly reccommend it to any woman who isn't afraid of facing her own sexuality.
Rating: Summary: a fascinating compilation of genres Review: I read this book in one absorbed sitting. Congratulations to M.J. Rose for having the balls to publish and promote her own book. I hope she and her agent are having the last laugh at the publishing world that wouldn't accept her manuscript in the first place. The book is a fascinating compilation of genres -- literary, erotic, suspense, thriller, and social commentary -- with a twist at the end that caught me completely off guard. Great ending. Great reading. The description of various upper class social worlds and concerns, I thought, were very wry and very dead on. In meets Evelyn Waugh meets Hitchcock meets Susie Bright at Good Vibrations (a woman's sex shop in San Francisco). Congratulations to M.J. Ross for having the courage to tell an intelligent story with compelling contemporary characters and not hold back on the sexual content
Rating: Summary: An unpleasant little story Review: What an unpleasant little story. Men are portrayed as perverts, thieves and pimps; women are righteous prudes. A woman is _shocked_ that a man wants to be sexually dominated during phone sex, the police antics are completely unbelievable, and the plot is silly. I just read the Kirkus review here that says "corny beyond belief," but I'd say that's being too kind. Its just plain dumb and a waste of time.
