Rating: 1 stars
Summary: not worth rating
Review: I don't mean to be impolite, and I lavish praise where it is deserved, but this book wouldn't pass third grade special education. I rated it one star because there are no zeros. Most people could write something better than this on their lunch hour. The writing is worse than sophmoric, the characters are wooden and one dimensional (especially the husband) and the story is childish. I'm not a writer but I'm sure there are many, many authors out there with much better manuscripts than this that will never see print. So why this one? What a complete waste of time.

Summary: well written, surprising and erotic
Review: Lip Service was well written, surprising, erotic (so much so that I was, unexpectedly, unable to read it in public) and the characters are well drawn. I especially liked the blossoming of the real Julia. It is about a married woman who starts doing phone sex for research and how this changes her life. It kept my attention through to the end, and I look forward to reading more by M. J. Rose.

Summary: I can guarantee you won't be sorry.
Review: Ms. Rose develops her characters with care and finesse. Even the minor characters peopling this world are three-dimensional and breathing with life. Every nuance of emotion, every scent, scene and sensory artifice is intact, leading the reader through a story that seems personal and real.

On the surface, Lip Service appears to be just another erotic story about a frustrated woman trapped in a sterile marriage and living a life of self-deception. Nothing could be further from the truth. Lip Service is a compelling headfirst dive into the deepest part of the human emotional complex that drives and motivates us to be honest sexual beings. It delves into a part of human sexuality that most people run screaming from when they confront the blatant, unvarnished part of their psyche that reveals raw human need. Ms. Rose has managed to write a story baring the naked 'self'. Not just about her secret self but all selves; the inner core of sexuality we all foster, hide from and secretly enjoy knowing exists. Lip Service compels readers to face the truth of their own false life illusions. It reaches deep inside and dredges up a part of you that used to be pure, honest and uninhibited. And, I, for one, rediscovered my younger wilder days of freedom of expression and the deep euphoria of honesty in sex.

Summary: A modern woman's sexual coming of age
Review: LIP SERVICE is the tale of a complex woman, Julia Sterling, whose bedroom walls are filled with a collection of exotic masks--resembling those psychological masks she must peel away, in order to plumb the depthsof her own sexuality.

In LIP SERVICE, M.J. Rose blends the dark eroticism of Anais Nin with the lusty cravings of Erica Jong, and delivers a refreshingly open look at a modern woman's sexual coming of age.

Summary: After I turned the final page I longed for more.
Review: Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. A daring new intelligent novel. I found myself annoyed with the 'good Julia's' personality. I enjoyed the later part of the tale much more than the beginning. It was her strength, empowerment, and openness that aroused me most.

After I turned the final page I longed for more.

Summary: A guilty pleasure!
Review: Outstanding book, engrossing, a classic! Inspiring, delicious, erotic and full of inhibition, "Lip Service" is a pillow book for the '90s. The writing is flawless and easily flows without interruption. Read it in the privacy of your home, if the puritanical type. Otherwise, take this book to a cafe or into the office lunch room and revel in its naughty revelations. Don't be surprised if this book fills your cheeks with color and makes you glance around to look at other people in a differen way. "Lip Service" is a guilty pleasure to read - share it with your girlfriends.

Summary: Unique, Exciting read!
Review: If there's any new novel to be considered different, unique, and a total exciting read, this one is it. Lip Service crosses all traditional boundaries and enters into a realm of brilliant fiction. The sinister mystery between these pages will keep you turning them. It's erotic, and real. The work is sensual to its core, even in the vivid descriptions of Julia's surroundings. You feel like you're there, and that's where you want to be. M.J. Rose has achieved the unachievable with this novel - she's brought romance, mystery, erotica, and fine literary talent all together to create a stunning, entertaining, and satisfying work of fiction.

Summary: A rare and good thing
Review: I finished Lip Service which I rather enjoyed... it certainly made the subway trips to and from work seem shorter... Rose is onto a style which is thoughtful without being boorish and that's a rare and good thing. She's written a book which people can be entertained by without feeling guilty over for not doing "serious" reading. All in all, a good read.

Summary: I loved this book.
Review: Well. what can I say except I loved this book. Since I couldn't get this one at the library I decided to wait and see what the reviews were like before I bought it. It was well worth the money. Some good news. When I bought it the lady at the counter wanted to know what was going on with it. They had just gotten it in recently and it was selling really well(B & N). Paul was a creep and there was a time when I really was upset at Julia for putting up with him. I was expecting Julia to also have another nervous breakdown but I am so glad she didn't. I liked Sam alot as well.He helped Julia a lot in coming into her own. Jack was perfect for Julia and I am so glad things worked out the way they did. I am going to give this book to my sister to read after my husband reads it. It was a wonderful read. I am so glad I gave it a chance and read it.

Summary: Wow. Over the tippy, tip-top!
Review: I wasn't sure I'd like this first novel ... seemed gimmicky, at first -- phone sex being the catch.

Forget that cynicism. This novel grabs readers from the get-go -- it's a twisted tale of lives disintegrating (then rebuilding) in The Big Apple within "respectable" lives -- and a "respectable" sexual-services organization.

M.J. Rose holds nothing back. Her female protagonist takes us into the immediate intimacies of how an intelligent, compelling character can find her life and those she loves turned on their respective heads when nothing is as it appears -- and everything's at stake.

I couldn't put Lip Service down. It's a spine-tingling read for anyone who's ever wondered what it would be like to say or hear: "What are you wearing?" ...

C.B.
