Rating: Summary: A spooky horror novel full of atmosphere Review: "Bad Things" is a great novel that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys horror and suspense. Its the story of Ricky Piper, a child afflicted with an ability to see greenjacks which are fairy type creatures that attach themselves to the Piper family. The novel starts at Halloween, when Ricky and his twin brother, Robin, are thrust into a terrifying experience with Big Jack, a Pan-like being made from twigs and leaves, that comes to take the soul of a Piper on Halloween. But something happens that night that haunts Ricky the rest of his life. And even as a successful adult, he is still unable to be sure what happened, and if he really saw the things he thought he did as a kid. When odd things begin to happen at the old house, he is left wondering if the greenjacks, in fact, do exist or is there more sinister going on at the house? This is an extremely well-written horror novel I devoured in a day and a half. Tamara Thorne has a way with words, and she is good at creating people you care about. She also is very funny and has a knack for putting in oddball characters like Dakota and Aunt Jade. Bad Things is great horror at its finest. A great novel.

Rating: Summary: Reading this book was like eating a 99 cent hamburger... Review: ... This book was such a disappointment to read. I picked it up based on the glowing reviews on this website. What a mistake! _Bad_Things_ reminded me of a low-budget, low-intellect horror film. It had a predictable plot, shallow characters, and little real atmosphere. Many characters, like Dakota or Aunt Jade were more like caricatures than characters. There were mere moments of promise in the novel. One scene that sticks out in my mind is Audrey's seduction of Ricky. It was funny and more entertaining than the main plot elements. If only more of the book could have been like that. Most scenes showed little real character development. The Ewebean family was completely one-dimensional and no scenes with Aunt Jade showed any kind of motivation for her actions. Even characteristics like Ricky's affinity for metal artwork seem to only serve as a poor metaphor for Ricky's position and say nothing about his character or other aspects of his life. Can anyone honestly say Thorne's dialogue for her characters was believable? I can't...P>The changing point of view was really annoying as well and seemed like a poor writer's crutch. Instead of having to work to portray character through dialogue and actions, Thorne reveals their thoughts directly. What ever happened to the writer's maxim of "Show, don't tell"? They say that genre writers can get away with poor writing because their fans don't care. Thorne seems to support that. ...Read at your own risk. One last note - Most of the plot elements in this book involved or suggested incest and child abuse. ... If Thorne is so interested in child abuse and incest, why not make that the real subject of her book instead of this pitable horror story? I think she may have done a better job with it.
Rating: Summary: Not a bad story but... Review: ..she could have done a whole lot more and go more deeply into the greenjacks legend. She barely touched on the subject of the greenjacks. Rather, she wrote a book about twins, one is a cripple and the other is normal. The crippled twin almost dies and a greenjack takes over, therefore putting the other twin through hell. Another story about a hero who is a wuss and doesn't know when to kick out his crazy Aunt. My opinion? Read it only if you have nothing better to do.
Rating: Summary: CAN IT GET BETTER THEN THIS??? Review: AFTER READING "CANDLE BAY" I THOUGHT THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS, BUT I HAVE TO SAY, THIS BOOK IS "BETTER" THEN ANY OF HER PREVIOUS BOOKS. STARTING IN 1972 RICKY'S GRANDFATHER TOLD HIM STORIES ABOUT THE GREENJACKS WHO LIVE IN THEIR YARD. GREENJACKS ARE LIKE MINI DEMONDS WHO TAUNT HIM. BUT HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SEE THEM, EVEN HIS TWIN BROTHER ROBIN CAN'T SEE THEM. ROBIN HAS NO LEGS, SO HE WALKS ON HIS HANDS. ONE NIGHT ON HALLOWEEN ROBIN CLIMBED A TREE AND "BIGJACK" STOLE HIS BODY AND HIS SOUL. NOW RICK HAS COME BACK AS AN ADULT TO AGAIN DEAL WITH THE GREENJACKS THAT HE THOUGHT HIS MIND MADE-UP, BUT THIS TIME HE BROUGHT HIS CHILDREN WITH HIM.

Rating: Summary: umm... Review: Hey you know what? this is a great book. i just don't like it when authors give a previous book a different name n try to pretend it's new just to line their pockets a little more. i think they should actually write NEW books! good plan huh? but hey curry, errrr thorne i mean, don't "panic".... have a nice day!
Rating: Summary: Bad Things, Good Book Review: I bought this book because I had the pleasure of reading Tamara Thorne's "Haunted". This book is the equal, if not the superior, of that book. Once again, Thorne combines nerve-wrenching horror with unflinching ...wildness to create the kind of experience that can only be achieved in the world of books. The basic plot is this: Ricky Piper, who's family emigrated from Scotland and founded the California town of Santo Verde, has "The Sight"-a family trait that allows him to see the ethereal "Greenjacks"-sort of nature elementals, linked to the God Pan. The Greenjacks, apparently, have no ability to perceive sensation, and so crave our senses-rich bodies. Ricky lives in fear of them for the first part of his life. On Halloween of his Eight year, Ricky's brother Robin (who has no legs) is the victim of an attack by "Big Jack", a swamp thing-esque creation of weeds and vines. Robin becomes possessed by a Greenjack, who, having neither legs nor the ability to perceive his brethren, goes from mischevious to insane. He torments Ricky until his death. The story joins Ricky again as a successful adult, who has convinced himself that the Greenjacks never existed, and that the torment his brother gave him was the result of brain damage. Now, Rick goes back to his ancestral home-and that's when the real "fun" starts. If you like horror, and if you have a steady stomach, GET THIS NOVEL. While your at it, get all of Tamara Thorne's books.
Rating: Summary: Creepy Review: I Thought this was very good. The thought of his Freakish Brother...gave me chills to read what he does. Good coverage from Youth to adult!! A Great disturbing..creepy read!!!
Rating: Summary: Very creppy, atmospheric, tension filled horror novel!! Review: I very much enjoyed reading Bad Things. Love the greenjacks idea, Robin's character, Dakota and the old house with all the secret tunnels. My one negative is Rick's character - he was way too passive and it didn't seem realistic that it would take him so long to figure out he can truly see the Greenjacks. And he was so depressive and down on himself. I understand that the author really wanted us to feel bad for Rick's childhood and all the abuse he suffered...but at times it felt like overkill. However, the overall story was great and I loved all the "little" happenings in and around the house that contributed to the overall sense of dread and creepiness. I'm definitely going to pick up additional books from Tamara Thorne!
