Rating: Summary: Absorbing read Review: Unputdownable. You are enveloped in a story and atmosphere of suspense as you wonder first about the nature of Eva's companions; then their intentions toward Eva; and, finally just who they are. Very well-written; a reader's treat; and the word companion will never be the same to you again.
Rating: Summary: More supernatural than I expected, but could be worse Review: I do not particularly care for this book. In part it is because I don't like books dealing with ghosts and such things and I did not realize "the friends" would play such a heavy role in this book so their presence just bothered me throughout. Furthermore, I found it very hard to care about Eva. I did eventually end up caring very much about her by the end, however it took virtually until the last chapter for that to happen. I certianly did not care about any of the other characters. This book irritated me mostly because Eva consistently makes what I consider poor life choices due to the influence of her supernatural friends and ends up unhappy for the vast majority of the book because of it. I certainly wouldn't recommend this book to anyone looking for a feel-good story and probably not to anyone else. That being said, it is not a horrible book. If you can get into it, the ending is fairly moving. I just don't know if it is worth the time to try.
Rating: Summary: Eva moved me to tears Review: A wonderful read that slowly pulls you in for Eva's strange, sad, poignant journey through life. Eva's mother dies shortly after childbirth leaving Eva to be raised by her loving father and aunt. From the moment Eva somehow escapes her crib as a newborn, we are certain that her life is not to be ordinary. At the age of six she encounters her two "companions", a woman and girl who are obviously otherwordly. The mystery of why the companions are with Eva goes on throughout her life, are they there to help or harm? This is a beautifully written story that is impossible to put down. I can almost guarantee you will find it difficult to maintain a dry eye at the end of this story.
Rating: Summary: A lovely, lovely story Review: Unlike so many modern novels that rush the story, Eva Moves The Furniture unfolds in a delicate manner, much like the way a rose opens its bud in time. At the end of the book, I was thoroughly satisfied because there was no false drama but rather an honesty, an integrity with which the author kept to the story. It's a book that invites you into the world of Scotland and World War II and the uncertainties of a young woman whose life was marked always by her mother's death. The restraint in the writing paralleled Eva's restraint about her contact with the dead. From one writer to another, I say, "Bravo, Margot Livesey!"
Rating: Summary: This book moved me!!! Review: A wonderful tale of a woman who growing up had to deal with the loss of her mother as well as other tragadies. She also had to deal with two visitors that would come to her from the other side. A nice story about connections we have with others and how strong that bond can be.
Rating: Summary: A Glorious Tear-jerker! Review: After seeing a review for this book in PEOPLE magazine, I decided that it sounded like my kind of story. The reason I gave it 4 stars is I had to read about a quarter of the book before I became obsessed with it! (5 stars is when it grabs me during the first chapter). By the time I had read half of the book I was thinking about it all day at work--looking forward to going to bed early to see what was going to happen. Here is a warning though: Don't stay up too late to finish EVA MOVES THE FURNITURE because you will be so stopped up from crying that it will be impossible to sleep. I ended up loving this story.
Rating: Summary: Eva Moves the Furniture Review: Though I only gave this novel 3 stars, I would give it a 5 for writing as Margot Livesey clearly is a very talented writer. The story of Eva is a very engaging one. As we follow Eva through the years of her life, we get to see positive and negative influences that her two "companions" have on her. Who are these companions that only Eva can see and what is their purpose? I felt a slight disappointment with the story as I was waiting for some surprising twist that never happened. I also was never completely swept away by a mother/daughter bond theme. Despite this, the author's words are beautifully written, full of vivid imagery. Eva Moves the Furniture is entertaining and does raise some good questions to ponder about the after life and our guardian angels~
Rating: Summary: Haunting and Beautiful Review: A hauntingly beautiful love story. I highly recommend it. Be sure to read author's dedication to the main character . .
Rating: Summary: Extraordinary book, but beware Review: "Eva Moves the Furniture" is beautifully written and the characters precisely drawn, but if you lost a parent when you were young, and if in addition you have a young child of your own, be warned that you may end this book in very painful tears.
Rating: Summary: Watch out...you'll get hooked. Review: Heard a review of this book on NPR, bought it here on Amazon. The book arrived, and I read it in ONE sitting. I *never* do this (and that's a good thing, 'cause I was up until the early morning and lost sleep). Good book, keep some tissues handy.
