Rating: Summary: Wonderful story telling! Review: What a wonderful story. This author weaves a beautiful and moving story of a lonely child. Her mother dying right after her birth, she finds solice in her "companions". They are not always helpful but they are her friends. I was in tears at the end and hating finishing this one! If you want a great read, this is it.
Rating: Summary: Imaginative, fast-paced read. Review: A lovely book about a young girl who has lost her mother, only to find herself haunted by two mysterious individuals. Alternately menacing and helpful, Eva's journey from girlhood to young adulthood in Scotland at the time of the Great War is never less than compelling. To say more would deprive others of what is, simply put, a great read. Although I was satisfied with the conclusion of the book, I was left wanting more.
Rating: Summary: A Little Gem Review: I had heard so much about this book for a long time, and finally decided to see what all the enthusiasm was about. I was not disappointed (which often happens with raved-about books!).Set in Scotland, this is an intelligent book which asks that we suspend belief to accommodate Eva's "companions", a young girl and a woman who accompany her through her life, appearing randomly, and able to be seen only by Eva. Although we sense that they are there to protect her, they also change the course of her life (but not its eventual outcome). Livesey deftly blurs the real and that which is fantasy, making all of these appearances by the companions, and their actions, seem natural. Where do people go when they die? Are there spirits out there, watching over us? Is the bond between mother and daughter unbreakable and eternal? These are some of the things to be pondered while reading this book. Livesey's telling of Eva's story, her coming-of-age, is unique and lovely. She makes the reader feel that it is perfectly logical that these companions should appear to Eva yet be kept a secret by her, even as a young child. Realistic yet magical, this is a poignant and moving story with much food for thought.
Rating: Summary: Engrossing read Review: With a two year old at home, I get little time to read. I read Eva Moves The Furniture, however, in one day. I simply could not put it down. This is a lovely and moving tale about the journey of a woman discovering herself, her place in the world and coming to grips with the power of a connection which won't release her. During my day of reading, Eva became a friend, thus I almost hated the ending. The ending was, however, poignant, moving me directly to heaving sobs. I will be recommending this to friends and family and am sure it will be a reread for me.
Rating: Summary: What a wonderful and touching read! Review: Like everyone, I was intrigued by the title and cover of this book, but you get so much more out of this book than you expect! Eva's lonely childhood strikes a chord due to her inability to share her secret of her "companions" with others. Later on as she becomes a young nurse and falls in love, she shares that secret with the one person you feel would understand but it happens with disastrous results. Eva is a character with flesh and bones and you can feel her loneliness and her yearning to belong in the world around her, even though her past and her "companions" do not allow her to do that. This book leaves you thinking of all those emotions days after you're finished.
Rating: Summary: A pleasant story Review: A pleasant and mostly satisfying story but it needs some tidying-up. The biggest irritant was that the author initially presents the "others" as menacing characters, then, towards the end she suddenly declares them to be benevolent. That's not fair. It's dishonest to the reader. However, the other characters in the book are well drawn and it's a nice story.
Rating: Summary: Different kind of book Review: I read this book for book club last month and we chose it because of it's catchy title. It was very difficult for me to get into, but it hooks you once Samuel comes into the picture. You realize the impact of the 'friends' during that time. I, at many times, felt the 'friends' were trying to lead her down the wrong path. But, at the end it clears itself up. The ending is good, but not as good as I was expecting. That was my first time to read one of her books, still debating on trying another one.
Rating: Summary: A truly moving novel Review: There is a mystery to being a mother - the crux of which is the depth of undying and unconditional love possessed of your child. Eve Troon lost her mother, Barbara, on the day of her birth, only knowing Barbara through the stories that her father and aunt, who was brought in as a surrogate mother, tell her. She visits the grave almost daily with her father and sees Barbara as an almost mythical figure in her history. Eva is visited frequently by her "companions" - the ghosts of a woman and girl who orchestrate nearly every eventful moment of her life. They save her life, arrange meetings...and separations...with people she loves, and provide comfort when she is lonely. What Eva doesn't know is why they are with her. As she trains to be a nurse, faces heartbreak, marries and becomes a mother herself, the companions are always around at the times she needs them the most. When Eva becomes a mother, she finds a sort of closure - she thinks - with Barbara. Her limitless love for her daughter brought me to tears in the last pages, as it will for anyone who loves a child with all their heart and soul. The first part of the book is a lot of back information, but read on - it's definitely worth it to put the pieces of the puzzle together in finding out exactly who the companions are and their significance in Eva's life. You won't regret the journey.
Rating: Summary: Not really a ghost story... Review: The cover of this book originally caught my attention, and the reputation of the author persuaded me to purchase it. I have to disagree with those who have stated that this is a ghost story. This is not a story about creepy goblins and unseen bumps in the night. Rather, this is a story of love and endearment between the living and the dead. The companions have kept watch over Eva throughout her life, although their real intentions have often puzzled her. Are the companions friends or foes? And what are their true identities? I enjoyed this book not only for the plot development but also for the descriptions of Scotland during the first half of the 20th century. A pleasurable, yet quick, read.
Rating: Summary: Eva's companions. Review: This book is about Eva who is born on the day that her mother dies. She is raised by her father and Aunt Lily. All of her life, the companions are with her.....but she is the only one who sees them. The first part of the book was rather slow for me. It didn't hold my interest, but I'm glad I kept reading it. Eva has trouble in school making friends and fitting in. She tries to get jobs when she grows up, but sometimes the jobs don't work out. Were they ever meant to work out? How many of us have been lead down a certain road and don't know why.....till the outcome is realized by us. This is what this book is about. Eva tries to understand why the companions are with her. And I'm not even sure that is ever revealed. It tells the story of Eva growing up to become a woman and have a family of her own.......and the companions are right there with her all the time......coming and going at will. But they never leave her. This is an enjoyable book.
