Summary: Almost as good as her other novels- Almost.
Review: First, let me just say that I thought this book was actually pretty good when compared with Mrs Feehan's other books, excellent when compared to what romance publishers have been producing lately. Still, it was no Dark Gold or Dark Desire.

My biggest complaint was the ending. Ok sure, Julian's fight with his life long enemy lasted 2 secs long. I can get over that, but the fact that Syndil and Barack's characters never reached any resolution was just poor taste. What the heck happened? I cant imagine Christine will devote an entire book on Barack and Syndil. Will we ever know if they are lifemates or not? I found the situation between those two characters way more interesting then the principle leads. Barack, who treats Syndil as a sister, yet has feelings for her, and doesnt realize that she is his lifemate because until Julian showed up, none of the other males even knew what one was. AWSOME! The fact that Christine "hinted" the pair were life mates was obvious. I thought for sure once Barack and Syndil merged minds he would find out she has feelings for him. But nope. Nothing! I couldn't believe when I flipped the page and there was only an add for one of Christine's next books that's not even part of the "Dark.." series!

Anyway, if you are first time reader of Christine's I would recomend Starting from the begining and working your way through. This book was nothing you couldn't wait and read later.

Summary: Dark Challenge
Review: I just finished reading all of the "Dark Books" and although Dark Challenge was not the best book in the series it is a helpful stepping stone. The story may have draged a bit, but we were introduced to new people. Of course that means that there will be other books. I sugguest that you read it just for the simple fact that you learn a little something new about their people, meet new ones and learn a bit about them. Plus while we wait for the next book it gives us all a chance to try to think about who should be next and who should go to whom. I personally hope to hear more about Gabriel and Lucian. Who knows maybe with Syndil's powers she wakes them up from the ground since she can feel the earth's pain and just maybe theirs. It would make for a good story, don't you think?

Summary: A real disappointment!
Review: I am an avid fan of the entire Dark series....Dark Gold and Dark Desire being my favorites. So, when I found out Julian's story was being written, I was thrillled. I was less than thrilled when I read the story, which is an all time first from Feehan. Julian was boring! Dara was Boring! The whole story was boring! The entire story reads more like a travel log rather than a romance novel. Dara and her family unit don't seem to have any feelings or revelations about the fact that they are NOT the only Carpathians in the world and the whole concept of lifemates saving the men's souls. There are underdeveloped subplots throughout the whole story like Syndil and Barrack, Gregori now has family,....etc. Most of the time is spent talking about Dara protection (she can take care of herself, boys) and moving the band from place to place so they can perform. Too much time is wasted on distrust, jealousy, Julian's acceptance into the family, and vampire fighting (except for the fianale, which lasts about two minutes). You could skip this book entirely and just read the next one to catch the highlights of the story.

Summary: WAS WORTH IT...
Review: I have found "Dark Challenge" different from the other Dark series. The story was great, new characters were involved,i loved the idea of having found Gregori the dark one lost brother (Darius) and sister (Desari). The love between Julian and Desari was wonderful, after suffering for centuries being alone, isolated and carrying the dark shadow within him he finally sees the light,Desari was a good match with her enchanting voice and powers. What touched my heart was the "family unit" how they had survived all these centuries staying together under the protection of Darius.I hope there would be a story on Darius,he certainly got me curious. I couldn't help but wonder if there would be a story on Gabriel and Lucian i think it would be great.I loved the tension between the new introduced Carpathian male Barack and Syndil, they appear to be life mates but Barack is so hurt and angry from what happened to Syndil that he won't admit it or simply doesn't know. As always Christine Feehan's work is more than fantastic,i truly recommend this book.

Summary: Christine Continues to Dominate the Market
Review: Christine Feehan does it again. I will not exposit on this book, except to say : WOW!

This book was simply one of the best of the five to-date. Christine Feehan continues to dominate the romance market and create memorable characters and heightened emotions. Thank you so much, Ms. Chris. May you write forever!

Summary: I LOVED THIS BOOK!!
Review: Let me start by saying that, if I had not previously been a devoted fan of Ms. Feehan's, this book would have ensured it. After catching fleeting glimpses of the main character Julian in both Dark Desire and Dark Gold, it was great to finally read his story. And Desari is an absolutly wonderful mate for this outdated caveman. Strong and opinionated, possessing just as many strengths and skills as Julian does, she is the an interesting and fully dimensional woman who is completely determined to drag all of the men in the book (kicking and screaming if necessary) into the 21st century. And it is so nice` to finally see more interaction amoung the Carpathiens. Most of the other books focus almost completely on the two main charectors, so you crave to know more about their people and where they came from. The only issue I have, and it is not really an issue, is that Ms. Feehan just doesn't let you know what it going on with the characters from her previous books. Maybe just a little glimpse now and then, please!

Summary: Getting Repetitive
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed Feehan's Dark Prince and Dark Gold. In my opinion, they were the jewels of the 5 "Dark ..." books she's published thus far. However, in agreement with another reviewer, I have to say that Feehan is starting to exhibit signs of both sloppy writing and sloppy storytelling. For example, she often uses the same phrases/words over and over again within the same scene - often within the same paragraph. This wouldn't be bad if the writing was particularly evocative, but it's more in line with badly cliched "purple prose" - her "velvet sheath," etc. One major complaint I have is that the 2 main romantic characters - Julian and Dara - really only get to interact with each other in the repetitive sex scenes (about every other chapter) so there's not exploration of who they are as characters apart from their choice of sexual positions and their post-coital dialogue. Additionally, Feehan didn't explore any of the potential she embedded in her secondary characters - for example, she hinted at Syndil and Barrack being lifemates but didn't develop this storyline at all.

Summary: Worth the wait!
Review: Somehow I stumbled onto the Dark series. I'm an old "Dark Shadows" fan (the original series), so I lean towards the supernatural genre anyway. I've read all of the books in the Dark series and enjoyed every one. It was easy to follow the story line, even reading them out of order as I did.

I feel "Dark Challenge" is the best of the series (although the other 4 books are very good, too), probably because Desari is such a strong character, certainly able to deal with Julian's "cave man" tactics. Christine Feehan introduces four additional characters with Darius, Barack, Dayan, and Syndil, as well as mentions more about Lucien and Gabriel. Surely such fodder won't go to waste! I eagerly anticipate several sequels to this wonderful line of Carpathian romances.

Summary: A very disappointing read!
Review: I eagerly awaited Dark Gold. When it arrived I immediately opened it then wished I hadn't. The book is filled with the same exposition about how much Julian loves Dara, how long he's waited for her and how he has 'need of her' over and over. After reading that narration and the tedious sex scene the second time (not even halfway through the book) I lost interest. There isn't much diaglog so the story moves slowly. In my opinion the book could have been over at page 150, but Feehan drags it out for 227 more pages. It was all empty - more 'need', more 'velvet', more and more of the same sex, the same whining by Julian and Dara and the same arrogance of Darius... Even the battle in the end - the one where Julian faces the vampire that ruined his life - is boring. It's over in minutes. The man spent centuries looking for the vampire only to kill him off without much effort. Unlike her other heroes - Jacques, Gregori and Aidan, I felt nothing for Julian. And even less for Dara. The characters are wooden, so is the prose. Stick to some of her other books, this one is a real sleeper.

Summary: Great Book, Definitely a Keeper
Review: Christine Feehan has done it again. Julian Savage has found his lifemate Desari, only she doesn't know it. She is part of a group of lost Carpathians. This lost group learns alot about their race from Julian. He gives the males hope for the future. There is alot of excellent interaction between the villians (vampires, human assains) and the group. I enjoyed the conflict between Barack and Syndil (who are lifemates and do not know it). The action is non-stop. Thank you Christine for answering so long standing questions about the Carpathian race in this book. Darius has just got a loyal fan who looks forward to seeing his own story. Keep writing Christine.
