Summary: Desmond, great fun for the rainy day
Review: Although I enjoy the "traditional" vampire stories, I always appreciate a new reworking of the vampire myth, especially as presented here by Mr. Dietz. Placing a vampire into the context of a love story, although not original, does give a nice reworking to the standard theme. Also, the historical sections of the book offer a wonderfully melodramatic gay love story.

Desmond is great fun to read, an old-fashioned page-turner that kept me up at night. My only problem with the book is the final section that almost seems to have been written by someone else. Although a plot twist was needed to resolve the story lines, it seems to me our heroes started acting very much out of character. Mr. Dietz has posted a note saying this was not the ending he had originally envisioned, and I am curios what his pre-editor conclusion would have been. The story is resolved and the book ends too quickly, but perhaps that is just because I was enjoying reading the novel!

Summary: Give us a SEQUEL!!!
Review: Best love story I've read since Mary Renault's "the Charioteer". Desmond was more human and loving than any vampire story I've ever read or for that matter any gay character I've ever read, he deserved his happiness with Tony. Any way to find out how the original ended? And to get on a signature list for a sequel?

Summary: Desmond: too sappy and totally destroys the vampire legend
Review: Desmond is written as the anti-vampire, rather than as a vampire himself. Though he has a lust for blood, and regularly goes out "hunting," his character is written in such a way that almost all conventions of vampire lore are tossed out the window (forget crucifixes, fire, water, sunlight, home soil... what's left?). It made this reader wonder why anyone would fear vampires at all! Indeed, there are characters in the book who welcome the opportunity to be hunted by this breed of vampire. The author appears to be a bigger fan of furniture than the paranormal/supernatural. So why two stars? Somewhat interesting use of historical background in describing Desmond's past generations. Limited to two historical eras. One last note: the dialogue and interaction between lovers in this story are sappy, overly melodramatic: parts of this story read more like a romance novel.

Summary: A big disapointment
Review: Having read most of Anne Rice's books and also other vampire stories, I have to say that Desmond was definitely one of the very best ones. I have suffered and loved with Desmond.
It is a novel full of love and erotic scenes, violence and hunger, a true vampire book.
Thank you for writing it, Ulysses G. Dietz!

Summary: Trash
Review: Honestly, this book was total trash. Poorly written, amateurish and disturbing on too many levels to name. It's definitely light reading (if any) so if you're bored on the beach, this might be your kind of thing. I found it a little embarrasing.

Summary: Wonderful story mixing love and the supernatural. Great!!!!!
Review: I am absolutely in love with this book. If the author ever reads this: I want more!! Sequel, please!!! Now granted my enthusiasm is excessive, as I have just finished the book. However, i really really enjoyed the emotion contained in it. The author does a wonderful job bringing the characters' feelings and actions to life. I'm a sucker for both love stories and the supernatural (big X-files fan!) and I definitely reccomend it to anyone who feels the same.
