Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: This is a great book. I am a big fan of horror and thrillers. This book can compare to Stephen King's books. I love it and i will suguest this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: New dimension of Christian fiction Review: I am consistently pleased with Frank Peretti's writings, not because he is the best writer in the world, but because as a Christian writer, he doesn't shy away from any subject necessary to tell a story. THE OATH was a new experience for me: Christian Horror. This book unfolds slowly and suspensefully as the main character tries to investigate his brother's violent death. Step by step the story grows more fantastic, and results in a battle-to-the-death between good and evil. The metaphorical nature of some of the situations is intriguing, and I liked the way the author worked in concepts such as sin, repentance, hypocrisy, and salvation. I wasn't as impressed by this book as I have been by other Peretti books, and I honestly never got scared. However, I am still pleased that Peretti doesn't allow himself to be caged in by what some Christians may deem "inappropriate." Christian Horror is a very small genre indeed (perhaps only one or two of Peretti's books make up the whole of the genre?), but I think it is something to be explored. Peretti's THE OATH was a good beginning.
Rating: Summary: DON'T GO OUT ALONE! Review: Peretti does it again! I was hoping that the story would never end. It seemed that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to keep up with my eyes. The Hyde River crew was a scary bunch!
Rating: Summary: THE OATH Review: I was never fond of reading, but upon discovering Frank Peretti's books, at age 50, I began a new path. THE OATH is by far Mr. Peretti's greatest work. I am a care giver for my mother and mother-in-law and found myself hiding behind furniture on the floor, not being able to put the book down, while still within earshot of their shenanigans. Thank you Mr. Peretti for an exciting vacation from life!
Rating: Summary: A great book! Review: This book is one of my favorites. It seemed all to real (besides the dragon of course) and it was wonderfully revelant and inspiring. I agree it was pretty intense, but I got so much out of it as a Christian and would recommend it to almost anybody. I wouldn't really use it as a witnessing tool, like for instance the Left Behind books, because I think there is a lot of symbolism that might be confusing. I loved the main characters real life struggles and how God helped him overcome it all in the end. Definately five stars!
Rating: Summary: Thrilling Review: I could'nt put this book down. Frank Peretti gave a good allegory on sin. What he wrote was Biblical and real. Once sin had ahold of you it basically owned you. Pretty soon it would devour you, unless you turned to God for help.(wwjdliveforJesus@Juno.com)
Rating: Summary: 1 Review: The Oath is about a town that is home to a secret plague that everyone Knows about but never speaks of. The plague is ancient and very dangerous. The original people that found out about the plague took an oath not to let it out but also not to let anyone know about and to not speak of it. This book is very intense and has a very positive message. I highly recommend it. Read the book!
Rating: Summary: A look at what goes on inside Review: A fan of Peretti's from the first chapter of "This Present Darkness," I was not in the least disappointed in "The Oath." While "This Present Darkness" and "Piercing the Darkness" were true to life from start to finish, this book contained a different approach. Although I enjoyed every minute of it, there were several times during the reading that I stopped and thought, "This is so unreal. This could never happen." However, it was toward the end of the book that I realized it was a parody (in the loosest sense of the word) of what takes place in the spiritual world. The dragon that controlled the town was Sin, and although sin can never take a fleshly form and go around devouring unsuspecting townsfolk, in a spiritual sense, it does just exactly that. While we cannot see a smelly black substance oozing from our chests when we get sin in our lives, if we could see through spiritual eyes, we really would see a blackened heart, full of sin. As in the book, it is when the smallest sins get into our hearts and turn them "black," and we have removed ourselves from the realm of God's protection that the big "dragon" can come and eat us up. It is obvious that Peretti really knows something about the spiritual world, and this book, when taken in the right context, can help the reader to understand what is actually going on although we can't see it in the natural.
Rating: Summary: Great Analogy Review: Peretti creates a great analogy of sin. Sin is like a dragon. In fact, sin is the devil. No one in my whole life has ever really explained why sin is evil and bad. But with Peretti's tremendous understanding of the Bible and spiritual warfare, he compares sin to a dragon who marks you with a an oozing scab waiting to eat you. His comparison is perfect. Once you sin, you get marked over the heart a black oozing scag. At first you freak out about it and hide. Then you get used to the pain and start committing sin more and more. The black scab grows and oozes more while you start to not notice it, and everyone else does. Before you know it, the dragon eats you. But if you got Jesus in you, then you will never get the scab, and the dragon will stay away. That is exactly how it is in real life. If you wonder why you need Jesus or have problems with sin, you should definately read The Oath.
Rating: Summary: Subtle and Powerful Review: Peretti uses the guise of a horror story to weave an allegory of sin and redemption that will take you on a ride you'll never forget. After the thrills are over, you are left with one haunting question - is the dragon stalking YOU?
