Rating: Summary: It is captivating, spell-bounding, and thought-provoking. Review: The Oath keeps your attention and stirs your imagination. It causes you to pause and think about the "dragon" in all of us. It is "must" reading for Christians. It makes you think about your "sins" and the consequences of them. I would love to see a producer, such as Steven Spielberg, take this book and place it on the big screen. It could be bigger than Jurassic Park.
From the very beginning, you are placed in the situation and you become a part of the townspeople who are being possessed by the "dragon". All through the book you try to envision how it will end, but it is almost impossible to reach the conclusion (unless you read the ending first). As a Christian, this book made me look at my faith and beliefs more closely. In keeping with the Frank Peretti tradition of excellence, he has once again triumphed!
I heartily recommend all of Peretti's novels.
Rating: Summary: Not fast, but profound Review: It's a good story, though not quite the page-turner of some of his others. I didn't feel the impact of the book until I turned the last page. Peretti paints a very vivid picture. As a Christian, I found the symbolism to be quite profound
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful book. One of the best I have ever read! Review: Frank Peretti has got to be one of the best authors I have ever had the pleasure to experience. The Oath is a masterpiece and had me hooked in just a few pages. The way the characters were described had me feeling that I actually knew them. The action had me to the point where I could not put the book down. I would recomend (and have) all my friends. It is a good story on how once an oath is given to the devil, it is sometimes impossible to break. Especially if many others are in on the oath too
Rating: Summary: GREAT JOB!!! Review: A VERY SUSPENSEFUL TALE. THIS DRAGON COULD BE OOZING OUT OF OUR OWN VERY HEART
Rating: Summary: GREAT JOB!!! Review: A VERY SUSPENSEFUL TALE. THIS DRAGON COULD BE OOZING OUT OF OWN VERY HEART
Rating: Summary: It lurks in darkness, seeking whom it may devour... Review: Frank Peretti spins another challenging tale examining
the spiritual. In a small mining community called Hyde Valley, citizens are hiding a problem capable of destroying them all. They ignore the annoyance and even
treat it as a pet. However, this creation preys on their
fear and is under no one's control. Peretti is wise to
point out - we all live in Hyde Valley.
Rating: Summary: Christian Fiction With An Edge--A Dull Edge, But An Edge Review: "This guy is the Stephen King of Christian fiction," a friend of mine excitedly exclaimed when he got his copy of The Oath. I calmly reminded him that a) I'd never heard of Frank Peretti before and b) I didn't exactly care for Stephen King in the first place. Though the first part of my response has since changed, I still see nothing in The Oath to get excited about. The story is set in modern times, in a backwoods town where people mysteriously die in rather grotesque ways. After loosing his brother, the protagonist goes to investigate and finds more than he bargained for. Basically, The Oath takes complex spiritual issues and simplifies them by personifying them. Even that description is more exciting than this book. I'm not trying to write a negative review, but I really didn't like the characters; they were bland, Christian fiction stereotypes. Now, that's not to say the book wasn't readable--it was highly readable--and the story was actually clever, just not as well executed as I had hoped. Peretti has mastered the art of moving a story along, something many writers in his genre haven't figured out yet. There's a lot going on in this book and you don't get bored. The Oath is a safe book. I'd let my children read it without hesitation. There's nothing truly offensive within its pages. It has a wonderful moral lesson about feeding (indulging) sin and how sin overtakes us--something non-Christians would probably find puritanical and ridiculously executed. Nevertheless, I find nothing to truly hate about The Oath. It is what it is--a bedrock work in a genre that lacks definition, leadership, or any clear direction. It is the quintessential Christian fiction title--murky at times, laughable at times, but mostly entertaining, wholesome, and definitely a professional presentation (unlike much of what passes as Christian fiction). So what if it's a moral play? For anyone interested in Christian fiction, this is a good book and one that won't sour your pallet.
Rating: Summary: My first novel! Review: This was the first large novel I ever read and I really, really enjoyed it. Ever since I have been turned onto reading because of it. The writing isn't complex but very descriptive. The plot absolutely rocks! Its not as scary as some people say, at least it wasnt for me but for creepiness its a great read and highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Mixed feelings Review: The book I am reading is very interesting at the beginning but then again very confusing I don't know if it is because of me or just it really is confusing. At the beginning of the book it starts out with somone running like crazy from somthing but it does not say what so you are very confused for the first chapter until you get to the second chapter which is lableded The Bear. I like this book though accept the fact I think this book is way to long for the topic. There is talk about Cliff a guy that was killed while camping at the beginning the sheriff thinks it's a bear but there is talk that it something. At the beginning I thought that it was a bear but then I started to have mixed feelings about this thing that killed cliff I am beginning to think that it is something else. Also I think that the author should have explained a little more at the beginning bu then again I think he did a googd job because I want to read more.
Rating: Summary: Chris Review: I LOVED This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness by Frank Peretti so I was so eager to read this book. I was very disappointed by the slowness of the story line. While, I enjoyed the ending, It was not worth the 4 times I had to check it out of the library to finish reading it. It took 350+ pages to get going. I don't recommend this book, I am sorry to report.
