Rating: Summary: Interesting, but hardly extraordinary Review: I have never been able to develop an affinity with Stevenson's writing. The reasons for this are indefinable, but the fact remains - I do not care overly much for any of his work. "Jekyll and Hyde" is the only one of his works from which I have gained any satisfaction. Its brilliant characterization, its seductive atmosphere - both serve to give the story depth and immediacy. For all that I couldn't rate it higher than three stars. I suspect that at least part of the reason is that "Jekyll and Hyde" has become so deeply rooted in pop culture that most people know exactly what the relationship between the two men is, thus removing the element of tension from the story. For me, the biggest problem I had was the anti-climatical ending. While the final two chapters shed a great deal of light on Jekyll's actions, I felt as though Stevenson was beating me over the head with his themes. I would have prefered something more subtle. As for the other two stories in this particular edition ('A South Sea Bridal' and 'The Ebb-Tide'), towards them I feel quite indifferent.
Rating: Summary: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was not what I thought it would be! Review: I only read the introduction and the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I found out that the story was quite exciting. I thought it would be too complicated to read, but I found that it wasn't until I got to the last chapter. The last chapter had a lot of complicated words because it is the narrative of Dr. Jekyll, who, well, is a doctor! The last chapter did explain a lot, though. So I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about scary things, like a doctor who turns into a mad man!
Rating: Summary: What I thought would be boring was actually interesting! Review: I thought that this book, being a classic and all, would be totally mind-boggling, hard-to-follow, and boring, like most "classics" are. Yet it was different. It kept me intrigued and also reinforced the lesson of not to judge a book by its cover!
Rating: Summary: Classic! Review: The Strange Case of Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde is a masterful short story. This is a fun, quick read about a man, his dark side, and friends who wish to save him. Robert Louis Stevenson is certainly a great writer and it shows in this short story; Stevenson at his best!
Rating: Summary: Poorly written Review: This book was a dull book to read! After reading the first page and a half I stopped. I could'nt stand the notion of reading that stuff for so many pages. I gave it two stars because I'm sure its a classic and all that stuff. Save some time and money and read something from this century!
