Rating: Summary: Predictable and insipid Review: This isn't a thriller, not a police procedural--more a meshing of Ed McBain and a romance novel. The story is contrived- the "villian" is revealed far too late, and with no fleshing out of his character. The notion that Megan would hop in the sack a few days after hitting town is moronic, and the sex scenes read as if they were written by a nun. Don't waste your time.
Rating: Summary: *sigh* Hoag is the best Review: The words to describe the quality of her books don't exist. I'll tell you that right from the start. I have read all of her books, and i disliked not a single one. I've reviewed many a Hoag book, and basically, my reviews always centre around a couple of main points. Her stunning characters. I think Hoag is probably the best writer out there for the creation of human, believeable, compelling, realistic, interesting, characters. They leap off the page at you. You care about them, and when the books end you are sad to see them go, as you want to keep reading about their lives, to see what happens, and if things are okay for them. What makes them so vibrant and vivid is the fact that she draws their lives in good detail...she fully fleshes them out, and she inflects their lives with details which make them breath. She gives them worries, joys, anexities, all sorts of things. and not only does she do this, but she also does not tell the story solely about the murder. Other things happen in her characters lives AS WELL AS murder. It makes the world she creates far more rounded and realistic. Another of her many strengths are her subsidiary character. they are bright, colourful, interesting, and add spice to the story. Her writing is one of the other stunning things. her prose is taut and vivid. her descriptions are beautiful. she really paints a picture for you with her words. I love being transported to the places she creates with her writing. Her setting are also excellent. She conveys place excellently, especially with her books set in the french Triangle. And this tale of murder in a small Minesotta town is also hugely realistic and strikes many notes of truth. Lastly, her plots. Not too far fetched, but still compelling, exciting, sometimes frightening, sometimes disturbing. This is perhaps one of her best plots ever. A chilling, disturbing tale about the abduction of a child from a small community. Enter police, press, distraught parents, suspects, and the like. It starts with a great kick with josh kirkwood going missing, and doesn't let up. i couldn't stop turning those pages. Tami Hoag is a highly reccomended author, and this is an EXTREMELY highly reccomended thriller. I absolutely loved the ending. And i lapped up the equally excellent sequel "Guilty As Sin" as soon as i had finished this book.
Rating: Summary: An Incredible Read Review: I was sick, so on a Saturday afternoon, I decided to buy a paperback book (something I haven't done in years) so that I could take my medication and read. Needless to say, when I opened the book and started to read, I became totally engrossed and lost time. The characters were well-written, the plot had me under suspense, and I simply could not put down the book. I finished the book the following day with a very satisfying feeling. This is my first Tami Hoag book, and you better believe it that I'm going to get the sequel "Guilty as Sin" right away! One of the best thriller book I've ever read. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: too similar to Still Waters Review: The first book I read by this author was Still Waters and there are too many similarities between that story and the one in Night Sins. A dark haired woman moves to a small town in MN. She finds herself irresistably drawn to the chief of police. They try not to get involved but, of course, they end up in bed. There is a jealous colleague and rumors abound in the small town. Blah blah blah...too much of the same in each book. I picked up Ashes to Ashes, Still Waters, Night Sins and Guilty as Sin at a used bookstore. I'm from Mpls. and enjoy if when there are references to a place I know. I read Ashes to Ashes first and enjoyed it. Still Waters was okay. I'm going to read Guilty as Sin because I have it, not because I really care about the characters.
Rating: Summary: Scintillating Story! Review: Dr. Hannah Garrison, a woman with many roles. Mother, wife, neighbor, professional, she has it all. Little does she realize that it's all gone in the blink of an eye. Her world shattered. Her son kidnapped, gone without a trace, her marriage failing, her sanity slipping, her world turned inside out. And this is only the beginning. Megan O'Malley, a tough, independent young woman in the male domimnated world of Law Enforcement, struggles to crack her first case. A stranger in both her new role as field agent, and citizen in the small town of Deer Lake, MN she vows to prove her merit. Mitch Holt, chief of police, has escaped the warm climate of Florida, but he cannot escape his past. A shell of his former self he heads the investigation into the biggest crime in town history. These are just a sampling of the terrific characters that fill the pages of Tami Hoag's thriller: Night Sins. Clever, dynamic and captivating, this book is hard to put down. Each passing chapter reveals new leads, twists, and possibilities. It is refreshing, realistic and gives the reader a chance to piece it all together before the end. Think you know who did it? A good book for the new year, pick it up!
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: I really liked this book. I enjoyed it being fast reading and the suspense was so that I couldn't even put it down. The way that Tami Hoag gave you little leads in every direction kept you guessing the kidnapper. It was such a realistic book it was almost as if you were watching the whole thing on television. I would definitely read more of her books and look forward to Guilty as Sin!
Rating: Summary: A Moderate Thriller that really costs double what you see on Review: This was a passable mystery, not great but a decent beach read, until you get to the lack of an ending. At that point you realize that what you have bought is actually the first half of a sequel and that what was an acceptable ...540 page book isn't worth the time or money at ...1000 pages. I don't think I'm giving away the ending since I never invested the time or money in Guilty as Sin, so I don't know the ending.
Rating: Summary: Night Sins Review: I have to say that this book was so so suspensful, Very very good. I am going to read Guily as Sin next!!!!
Rating: Summary: Chilly Romantic Thriller Review: "Night Sins" is about a young boy (Josh Kirkwood) who's been abducted while waiting for his mother to pick him up from hockey practice. It's primarily left up to the two main characters to find out who did it: Megan O'Malley and Mitchell Holt. If you've read any of Tami Hoag's books, you'll know these two characters are destined for attraction before they even meet. Megan is an unmarried field agent for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension with a large chip on her shoulder, due in part from the gender barrier she's trying to cross in her profession. Mitch is the chief of police of Deer Lake who still grieves for his murdered wife and son, yet still holds on for his young daughter. Other memorable characters are Josh's parents (Hannah Garrison and Paul Kirkwood), whose marriage comes undone under the strain of this ordeal. It's easy to pity Hannah who portrays the grieving mother, and even easier to despise Paul, the self-centered father. A lot of people assume Paul is the kidnapper. Still, others are positive Olie Swain (a known child molester who works at the hockey rink where Josh played) is the pervert responsible. However, only one of these suspects is relatively linked to the abductor, while the other commits suicide with a glass eye (yes, a human eye). Pretty original way to go, I thought. Although I wasn't able to presume a motive, I guessed the kidnapper by page 186. I was excited to finish the book and see if I was right, but I was also a little disappointed. I like to be surprised at the end of a book and there wasn't much for me to be worked up about when my guess was correct. I'm not saying "Night Sins" is predictable, but if you've heard about or read books about kidnapping, you'll know the kidnapper is almost always someone close to the family. As with most of Tami Hoag's books, "Night Sins" is full of details and characters. Sometimes this is a nice change of pace if you're bored with one-dimensional mysteries, but on more than one occasion I was overloaded with characters and descriptions, making it a little difficult to focus on the plot. One more complaint: In one of the sex scenes with Mitch and Megan, Megan is wearing silk underwear, which doesn't seem appropriate considering the below zero temperatures. If this was to show Megan's hidden sexuality, I thought it was poorly conceived and made Megan seem less credible. Even though it's not as sexy as silk, Megan should have been layered in long johns. I would recommend this book to Tami Hoag fans and people who enjoy suspense with a bit of romance. If you've already read "Night Sins" and want to find out how the case ends, continue with "Guilty As Sin". Otherwise, you'll be left with a lot of unanswered questions. "Night Sins" was later made into a movie in 1997, starring Valerie Bertinelli and Harry Hamlin. I didn't see it, so I'm not sure how good or bad it was.
Rating: Summary: Just Plain Loved It!!! Review: It's been a couple years since I've read this one, but reading some of these reviews, reminded me just how much I loved this book! I'm going to purchase more of her books right now, I've really missed her style of writing. I found this book unpredictable, but then this book was one of my introductions into mystery books. This is the only Tami Hoag book I've read, and I am anxious to see some more. If you have not read any of her books, I'd highly recommend you pick this one up. I can definitely vouch for this one, as being a keeper... and highly entertaining mystery!
