Summary: very odd novel
Review: The story in this book is very odd, its not typically gory and suspensful like Richard Laymons other novels but still I could not put it down. Its the kind of book you read to find out what happens next to the main character. Its an easy read and requires little effort to finish.
I really enjoyed it!

Summary: It isn't very good ... but I really enjoyed it
Review: There is no getting around it: Night in the Lonesome October is not a good book. The premise, apparently, is to take a common setting (nightime in a small college town) and turn into something strange. Laymon sets this up with some skill, but, ultimately, fails to deliver on it. There is nothing sinister or evil going on in this town, just a lot of unexamined bizarre people who happen to be out at night. The plot is virtually non-existant, and the characters are horribly under-developed. The setting, which ought to be subtle, is repetitive and blunt. There is some sort of sexuality every five pages, all of it unrealistic and gratuitous.

In the end, what we are left with is a book that is not really a novel at all, but a series of fantasies that Laymon has about his college years. It would be great if we could all meet a young, gorgeous, intelligent, and funny woman who has read our favourite book and likes to have sex all the time and in any location. Greater still, would be to have to choose between her and the mysterious, yet sensitive and beautiful, woman. Or, even better, to have them both ...

What could have been a believable series of mishaps is destroyed by using characters that belong in a romance novel than characters that are actually representative of a bunch of college kids.

Yet ... I really enjoyed the first three-quarters of the book, and was only slightly let down by the ending. Certainly, after finishing the book and thinking about it, I realize that is not good, but it is good fun. If you have a lot of time, or are looking for a quick escape, this is a good book for you. You will enjoy the experience, even if you might feel a little guilty for it later. If you are in search of a "horror" book that will thrill and shock you, this isn't it at all.

Finally, there is an interesting aside. There is a Roger Zelazny book of the same name that has a similar feel to it. Both authors have taken the same vague premise of inhabiting a typical setting with strange people, and seeing how things work out. Zelazny's book is significantly better, but it may not fulfill the same entertainment desires as Laymon's. Definitely give it a read, though.

Summary: A journey into the dark side of the night
Review: This book was a amazingly fast read. This is interesting, since many books do not hold my attention for very long. The story is dark, and the atmosphere is intense. You simply cannot put this book down. You have to read it to fully grasp the contents. As you read this book, you think that maybe, just maybe, these things could be happening in the town where you live...... and you dont even know it.

Summary: Night in the Lonesome October is a great book.
Review: This is one of Laymon's best. It has a lot of adventure with the main character Ed who likes to go for walks at night. He has an interest in a young woman he sees when he goes for one of these nightly walks. It seems this girl likes to break into houses that she thinks or hopes is unoccupied and likes to sleep overnight and eat out there at the residents' expense. He already has an attractive girlfriend too so in a way I don't know why he would bother with this other girl.
Ed has a homosexual friend who is interesting. Unfortunately he does hit on Ed and Ed doesn't like it. ...But this homosexual character is very interesting as already stated and the book would not have been the same without him in it.

Summary: Great Suspense!
Review: This novel proved to be a pleasure. Though there was no supernatural horror, the real horror this writer brought into focus served just as well. I found myself being able to identify clearly with the main character-his ideas and feelings on things. Suspense was not lacking here at all. I kept turning pages wanting to know what happened next. If you wanna' read a fine book-read this one!
