Summary: Juvenile Fantasies
Review: Go out late at night when only the weirdos are out. All the women in your life are sexually aggressive and can't get enough of you. Let's do it under the bridge where the cannibals live. Your biggest fear is homosexual rape.

Too wordy, too far out to make you afraid.

Summary: Interesting, but ...
Review: I have heard and read a lot about Laymon, so I decided to give this novel a try. College student Ed (our hero), is dumped by his girlfriend. He gets involved with a new love, and has run ins with night wanderers, cannibals, psychos and... well, it gets weirder (and kinkier) from there.

Laymon has a nice flair for the creepy, but some of the elements just don't gel together, and the ending is rushed. We never get to know enough about any of the characters to really care, and the bad guy is just a meaningless plot device with weird kinks.

For a better treatment of a similar theme, try the out of print "The Night People" by Jack Finney.

Summary: A Promising First Chapter. . . but
Review: I read this book (almost did not finish it even when I had only 50 pages left) because of some great reviews. It starts out by having a scary setting, but deteriorated, page by page, into silliness and stupidity. I would not recommend wasting time reading this book. Watch TV, take a walk, do anything but read this book. Time waster.

Summary: Night In Lonesome October
Review: I thought this was a bit tame for a Laymon book. There was no real gore just a very odd tale to be told. It was interesting though and I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. It's not really suspenseful but you follow this poor man through a time in his life where odd things happen and you just HAVE to find out what the guy will run into next. I thought it was quite good but not one of his best.

Summary: Not up to Laymon's regular quality
Review: I'm a HUGE Richard Laymon fan. However, this book feels as if he just sat down and started writing without an outline or any idea of where it was headed. I only wish the rest of the book was as good as the last 50 pages. If you are a new reader, choose something else by Laymon to start with... like IN THE DARK or ISLAND. Don't get me wrong, this was still an enjoyable read, but not nearly his best.

Summary: Never QUITE got there...
Review: I'm not saying it's not worth reading -- it is. This is the first book I've read by Richard Laymon, so I look forward to the rest.

Our hero, Ed, gets dumped by his girlfriend, and decides to take a walk in the October night to clear his head. I won't give away what happens next, but suffice to say that he meets several fascinating people; one who wants to show him the wonders of the night, and some who are outright monsters.

As I say, it's definitely worth reading. I have only two complaints; it doesn't really explain everything sufficiently at the end, and the writing is a little TOO sexual.

Summary: Laymon Kills!!!
Review: I've read alot of Laymon. Too many novels to cite here. I don't know how he did it, but everyone has been excellent. The saying is true: he was incapable of writing a bad novel...That being said, I think this novel may be the scariest one I've indulged in. Seriously folks, this baby is really creepy. I will never be able to go for a walk after dark again with out this novel slithering into my thoughts...and don't get me thinking about underpasses and clowns either!

Summary: When you need a change of pace
Review: If you feel overwhelmed because you read tons of typical horror novels, that make out the whole world to be a scary place, I recommend this R.Laymond novel. It pushes ALL your emotional buttons.

Summary: Another Laymon roller coaster ride!
Review: In his book, "Night of the Lonesome October", Richard Laymon once again lets his imagination run wild. This is the story of a relatively normal college student who finds that his true love has dumped him for another man. As this young man, Ed Logan, tries to deal with his anguish, he encounters some tremendously weird (even for Laymon) characters.

His former girl friend's sorority sister, Eileen, tries to bring Ed out of his funk and, in doing so, falls head over heels in love with him. As Ed and Eileen's relationship intensifies, they encounter some of their college town's strangest folk. All the way from cannibal "trolls" who live under a bridge next to campus to a "bike hag" who tries to run people down as they stroll the city streets in the novel. Throw in a bi-sexual fiend who's out to get both Ed and Eileen and a young homeless girl named Casey who spends every night of her live playing "hide or ride" and you've got some downright bizarre characters. Where DOES he come up with people?

If all of this sounds far-fetched and unbelievable - then you can bet this is only the start and you have found yourself smack dab in the middle of a Richard Laymon novel. As I write this I find myself wondering how I can summarize the plot without, you, the reader, thinking I'm making it up as I go. That's the kind of roller coaster ride in store for those who read anything by Laymon.

While, not one of his top novels, (my personal favorite continues to be "Funland") you'll no doubt have a good time reading this rapidly-moving book. As is typical in Laymon's books, there's plenty of violence, sex, and even an occasional mutant. As has often been said about his work, "Laymon can't write a bad book"!

If you like off-the-wall type action with thrills and chills peeking around every corner, then by all means, grab a copy of "Night in the Lonesome October".
