Rating: Summary: One of the best NW Books IMO (after Ash's book of course!) Review: ...... If you like a book where you find yourself smiling about it even hours after finishing it these are the books for you. Even though this series involves creatures of the night there is an optimistim and a faith in goodness and honesty that shines through. A great author for any age. ......... so even if you don't consider yourself a reader you'll probably find yourself hooked before you know it.
Rating: Summary: Not your typical vampire book Review: LJ Smith has been one of my favorite authors since I was in junior high school. Her books are all about the supernatural, but you don't have to be a science-fiction, horror story lover to enjoy them. The Night World is a series about vampires, witches, shapeshifters, and the humans who know about them. However, don't be turned off if this isn't typically your thing. They are more love stories between teenagers who hapen to be supernatural beings than they are books about supernatural beings who happen to fall in love. The characters are easy to relate to because they have the same types of problems that normal teenagers have, fangs and all. Secret Vampire is one of the best Night World books in the series. James is a vampire whose human best friend, Poppy, is dying of cancer. He has to choose between breaking the laws of his people or letting Poppy die. He also has to face the obstacles of Phil, Poppy's possessive twin brother, Poppy's stubborness, and Ash, James' ruthless vampire cousin. I would recommend Secret Vampire for any teen girl, because in encompasses a wide variety of genres into one book without going too heavily into any of them.

Rating: Summary: Goodly Review: The reason I didn't rate this book 5 stars is because I believe that L J Smith's best books are the Secret Circle ones, but anyway...I got this book free with a Just 17 issue ages ago when the book was first released in England, I'd already read the Secret Circle so I was familiar with the author, and I loved it. There's comedy, romance(mostly romance) and excellent cult characters, like Ash, who only appears for a little while but you're glad when he does. It's one of the best Nightworld books. It's also a bit of a weepie so don't read it on the bus or anything...you have been warned.
Rating: Summary: A weak start to a good concept Review: L.J. Smith's new series 'The Night World' should have started with a bang. Instead we get a rather disjointed story involving a young girl, Poppy North who is dying of cancer. There is no way medicene can save her and it is only a short matter of time before her death. It is then that her best friend James Rusmussen comes forward with a big secret - he is a vampire (gasp! shock! horror!). He offers to change her into a vampire as well in order to save her life, and after much deliberation she agrees. The catch is she would have to hide it not only from her own family, but from his world- the Night World as well, for it is forbidden for him to change her into a vampire. Then comes the rather long narrative in which she prepares for her 'death', and frankly it all comes across as rather fake as the story launches off into several tangents where you loose track of what's actually going on, as well as plot holes you could drive a bulldozer through. Why does she keep her resurrection from her mother when her brother and her father know about it? That seems rather unfair. Why does she run off with Ash? - the reasoning behind it just wasn't sound. How come James and Poppy didn't realise they were soulmates from the word go - all the other couples that follow do. And the ending is rediculous - it turns out that she was a 'lost witch' and so belonged in the Night World all along. How's that for a forced happy ending? Is it somehow alright for a witch to be changed into a vampire, when it isn't alright for humans? However, fans of L.J. Smith don't seem to be disappointed, and I must admit it did keep me interested, even though 'Secret Vampire' was not the brilliant opening novel it should have been.

Rating: Summary: Good Beginning Review: Poppy Smith is secretly in love with her life-long friend James. When she discovers that she has pancreatic cancer and only a short time to live, she discovers a dark and terrifying secret. Now she must choose - her life, or her family and friends. James is torn between his love for Poppy and the world he has grown up knowing. Determined not to lose her, James makes the ultimate sacrifice and tells her of his vampire nature. He can make Poppy a vampire too and they will be immortal but Poppy cannot see her friends or family again. James will do anything to protect her but Poppy is undecided. She wonders if she will become a monster (vampires do drink blood after all) and if she can live that kind of life (ruled by bloodlust - the need/hunger for fresh blood). When she agrees, the exchange of blood occurs and there is no turning back. James and Poppy know they will become outlaws and have to live their life running and hiding. This is because James has broken two sacred rules of the NightWorld (secret society of witches, werewolves, vampires and shapeshifters). The first - never let a human know that we exist and the second - never fall in love with a human. For that alone, he will be condemned to die a horrible death for the only substance harmful to a vampire is wood and execution occurs by sticking hundreds of stakes into the body. James cannot help but love Poppy because they are soulmates (two souls who when joined, are whole again). However, he has also broken another rule by turning Poppy into a vampire without express permission from the Elders of the Council who rule the NightWorld. Poppy is a renegade vampire and outcast from society. The lamia (name given to naturally born vampires) will never let her live as one of them and James' dangerous cousin Ash is close to the truth about Poppy. Good beginning. It doesn't deserve 5 stars because it takes a litte while to get going but I can understand that because the author has to introduce a new 'world' and concepts in a short novel.
Rating: Summary: Secret... Review: James and Poppy are best friends (and soulmates). But, one day, Poppy finds out that she has a horrible illness and nothing and no one can help her...except James. James has been hiding something from her. He is a vampire. Will James break the rules of the Night World to save his soulmate and risk getting him and Poppy killed? Or will he let her die and live forever with a broken heart? Excellent book. I'm truly glad that i bought it.
