Rating: Summary: Light Reading Review: Alex Doyle and his 11-year-old brother-in-law Colin are driving from Philadelphia to San Francisco where Courtney--Alex's wife; Colin's older sister--is preparing their new home for them. The moment they leave Philadelphia, Colin insists they're being followed by a van. At first it's a game for Alex and Colin, a way to pass time and get to know each other. But when the van continues to follow them out of state, they soon realize it's not just a coincidence--the man is chasing them, waiting for his chance to attack. The man is George Leland, a delusional psycho who carries on conversations with his imaginary ex-girlfriend Courtney, who he believes still loves him. George decides he must get rid of the competition before they reach California so he can have Courtney to himself. "Shattered" is a great thriller about a crazy, jealous ex-boyfriend who stalks his ex's new husband and baby brother on a cross-country drive. This is one of Dean Koontz's earlier books and wasn't even published under his original name until 1985. The pen name he had used was K. R. Dwyer. "Shattered" isn't like his other high-tech / supernatural suspense novels, which was a relief. I'm more of a fan of Dean Koontz's pseudonym books, like "Face of Fear", which are simple--yet exciting--action novels.

Rating: Summary: Short, but hardly sweet Review: As some other reviewers have already said, this starts okay but steadily deteriorates. No characterisation, no plausible plotline and stupid conflict scenes.
Rating: Summary: Clearly written by a novice Review: Clearly the work of a novice writer, this book is certainly not at the level of Koontz's later, more mature works. It amazes me that something this bad can be published, and yet so many competent novelists are shunned by major publishers. A travesty, really.
Rating: Summary: A thrilling story! What a great success! Review: Dean Koontz's, Shattered, is a thrilling mystery that will keep you on your toes and reading on all the time. This great mystery book fits well with all ages, but I'm sure teenagers would like it more than adults. I think Koontz really pulls this book together. All the details he adds, the descriptions of characters and settings, only add to the excitement of the story. I really can't explain or give much of the book away because that would ruin the excitement. I enjoyed this book a lot because it kept me reading on. No matter if you were tired or not, you could never put this book down. This is a great book if you are interested in mysteries or if you are interested in reading something so realistic and interesting. As Colin's-brother-in-law takes him on an action packed adventure cross-country not knowing that they are being chased and hunted down, Courtney waits at the new house for the two to arrive. Although I have not read any other of Koontz's book, I am sure that they will be just as great as this one. I disagree with those that say this was not one of his best books, because I believe that it is! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready for a fast paced book that is always making you ask questions to what will happen next. The suspense in this story is just thrilling and out of this world!
Rating: Summary: Too many loose ends Review: First of all, if you want a book you can read fast this is your book. It's a very short novel, one of Koont's first writings (which you can immediately tell by repeated references to the looks of the main characters, and the concept people, specially those in law enforcement, have of them). I did like the fast read and to tell the truth, I was glad to be able to read the novel after learning about it a few years ago, because I found the synopsis rather interesting. The problem with this book however is that it leaves many loose ends and as fast as it goes it really avoids a deeper approach to the story. Many readers are reminded of Duel, I was also remimded of the movie Joyride, but to tell the truth we never get a real nailbiting, mind shredding chase on the highway itself, except when the van catches up with our heros in a deserted road. The book is broken down in six parts, one for each of six days (monday, tuesday...), but you start reading that they get a glimpse of the van on tuesday morning, they get scared about it, lose it, and on the next page it's already tuesday night. Tension is better built on the second part of the book, specially towards the end but then the ending is too abrupt. As in Whispers this book has no epilogue, but you start feeling shoved to the exit. One of the things I didn't like, and which I realized a little while after finishing the book, was the waste of time with the cop and the forensics technician. I remember a scene in the book when the cop is sitting at a restaurant (or a cafe, something along those lines) and the technician approches him all of a sudden and starts inquiring about the case. I had this image of the worried cop and the Gil Grissom-like tech coming up with a mindblowing way of how to catch the maniac, which would lead to a great climax, but then all of a sudden we never hear from them again. They are completely forgotten, so I don't really know why they were given the importance they were given in the first place. Not the best Koontz I've read but it keeps you entertained for a while. If instead you wanna try a more interesting short novel by Koontz I would recommend The Voice of the Night.
Rating: Summary: Riveting Tale Review: I believe you all are making this book highly under rated...I think that Koontz was a master at this book and this is the first book I have read from him. He still knows how to make a good book even if he is in a dry spell or w/e. The book developed great characteristics for Alex and Colin building a foundation; however, I do believe they needed to elaborate more on the plot about the cops. Overall, this book has great potential of being a superb novel and I recommned it to anyone who likes to read a chilling tale and hang on to the edge of their bed until the book is over.

Rating: Summary: An enjoyable thriller. Review: I enjoyed this book. Not the best book Koontz has written, but still, I had goose bumps while reading this book. Slow at times, yet moves fast other times. Descriptive at times, such as when Leland has his headaches. I could feel the pain as I read the words. An enjoyable, but average thriller.
