Rating: Summary: Great Book - Ignore the Cover! Review: I almost passed on this sequel to the earlier, excellent 'Night Calls.' The cheesy cover art (a Native American looking woman a la Harlequin) gives the impression that this novel contains fantasy of the lowest order. The strength of the first book persuaded me to continue with this next installment, and I'm glad I did. The continuing development of Ally Sorenson in the Scandinavian/herbal/mystic arts of the 'Gift' picks up beautifully where 'Night Calls' left off. Allie personifies the best attributes of the American frontier - practicality, curiosity, and courage. The language of this novel softly blankets the reader in the feeling that Ally's world is a little off from ours, but never in a distracting way. The fantasy elements are organic to the character development, and neither feels forced. While it's not strictly necessary to understand the story, I strongly recommend reading 'Night Calls' first as an introduction to Ally's world; her growth into adulthood will be more meaningful.
Rating: Summary: Allie's back, Hooray! -- Sometimes Death is a better choice. Review: I love these books! Although Kindred Rites and Night Calls can be read as stand-alones, they are even more powerful when you read all of the story. Allie is tough, strong, smart, brave, and caring--- a great heroine. She is in even more danger in this book, for not just her life is in peril, her soul is too. A position as Death's apprentice is a much better choice than what awaits her otherwise. Skillful handling of myth, mountain lore and woodcraft, herbology, etc. Kimbriel has done her homework, and blends them all in with a strong plot, believable characters, and a clear clean writing style that delights. Enough terror to give you a jolt, enough strong writing to satisfy even the pickiest reader. READ THIS BOOK
Rating: Summary: One of the best books about magic I've ever read. Review: I loved this book. I enjoyed it so much, I bought a copy for both sisters and my mom. We also loved "Night Calls". We're all eagerly awaiting more in this series.

Rating: Summary: Wonderful tale of magic and mystery Review: I loved this book. It was a very satisfying read. The main character, Allie is wonderful. She's grounded, smart, and has so much common sense, even though she has a very different experience of reality than almost everyone else. The era of the novel is a mystery, it's in a time more technologically primitive than our own, yet never specified, which gave me the opportunity to let my imagination run with it. I can't wait for the next novel.
Rating: Summary: Already awaiting the third!!! Review: I stumbled upon this book by accident. I was looking for a horror about witchcraft and found this book instead. Since I am not an avid Fantacy reader I was hesitant to start this book, but once I did there was no turning back!! I found Allie to be a character with whom all ages can relate to even though she is only thirteen in the novel. I absolutely can not wait for the next book in this series!!! I seriously hope there will be one because I am looking forward to watching this young heroine grow up and develop her already massive powers.
Rating: Summary: Oh where oh where is the sequel???? Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING BOOK Review: I'VE HAD THIS BOOK SINCE IT WAS FIRST PUBLISHED, AND I'VE READ IT AT LEAST ELEVEN TIMES SINCE THEN, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THE OUT COME, AND WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, IT STILL THRILLS ME, I THINK THE ART OF BEING A GOOD WRITTER IS THE ABILITY TO HOLD READERS ATTENTION NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES A BOOK HAS BEEN READ AND MAKE THEM BEG FOR MORE. I'M BEGGING PLEASE WRITE MORE.
Rating: Summary: To save her own life, she became Death's apprentice.... Review: In this tale of Alfreda, the precocious young wizard first seen in NIGHT CALLS, Allie's talent for magic begins to mature--and attract unwelcome attention from several quarters. In the end Allie finds herself alone in the endless North American wilderness, on the run from black sorcerers, and unable to hide herself from magical pursuit. She knows only the first ritual a "practitioner" learns--how to summon Death, the last, great healer, who may or may not share the secrets of curing the sick. Allie needs information. Death needs a Trojan horse. And in the bargain that is struck, many lives will never be the same again.... If you like sharp-witted protagonists with unique voices, give KINDRED RITES a try. Allie won't disappoint you!
Rating: Summary: Terrific Review: Kathy has done it again. This is one of the best books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down! It was even better than Night Calls.
