Summary: B-MOVIE ANYONE?
Review: Like the bad B-movies that many of us devoured as adolescents in the pre-cable days when we scoured the TV listings for ANYTHING with monsters, "The Hyde Effect" hums along merrily dishing out ridiculous central characters, laughably bad dialogue and heaps of mayhem. If your tastes are not too discriminating you may think this is really great stuff (in the same way that as a 13 year old I thought Bachman-Turner Overdrive was a really great band). My guess is that as the unsophisticated readers' judgement (hopefully) improves he/she will look back on this book and say "I liked that??" To be fair, there is real imagination here and a few truly inspired moments. For instance, the mentally disturbed teen giant with the Viking fixation is a wildy audacious plot twist. But unfortunately instead of playing a key role in the story as it seemed he would this character comes to nothing more than providing the "Super Werewolf" with a decent sparring session. Hey, if you just want to experience a goofy werewolf romp akin to the previously mentioned B-Movies (such as 1956's "The Werewolf" with Steven Rich for instance) I guess this will do. But with those movies you only had to put up with 70 or 80 minutes of schlock. With "The Hyde Effect" you must wade through 399 pages. Not worth the effort, I'm afraid.

Summary: WOW!
Review: My first experience with this book was when I was forced to start reading by a person named Bear and told he would get off my chest when I finished chapter 1. I couldn't quit after just one chapter though and read the entire book in one sitting. If you get this book, DONT LOAN IT OUT! Steve Vance really is able to make the words come alive. Note that the "average" review is a perfect five stars.

Summary: Great Horror Novel
Review: The Hyde Effect is the best werewolf book I have ever read. It has plenty of action and good characters. The climax is superb. If done right, it would make an excellent film.

Summary: Deceptive title masks one of the best werewolf novels.
Review: The title and the back cover blurb hides the fact that this is the best werewolf book written in the 80's. A serial killer is stalking southern california. The killer is captured. This is where most standard WW stories end. And this is where The Hyde Effect breaks from the pack. The killer confesses to being a werewolf. He is transported to a government research facility where his "delusion" can be studied by the top specialist of the day. But at moonfall, in front of dozens of witnesses...All Hell Breaks Loose. And with the facilities fail safes triggered, the building is sealed with hundreds of victims inside. It's Die Hard with a Werewolf. I won't spoil it by telling you more, but I will say that I have read this book three times. --Cruz--

Summary: An all-time fav..well the last half anyway...
Review: This is a fun book, once you wade through the first 1/2 with the less than sterling dialog and characters. When the beast is captured, then the real nail biting suspense begins. The last half more than makes up for the first. It is a 400 page book, but the last 200 is what has convinced me to read it over 7 times in many, many years. Just ordered the next in the series and am looking forward to it.

Summary: Werewolf meets Die Hard
Review: This is the best werewolf novel i have ever read. The werewolf is one mean sonofabxtch. Any fan of horror, mystery, or Jack Higgins novels should check this out. It's hard to find, but worth the wait and the search.

Summary: Die Hard meets The Howling
Review: This novel starts out like the typical horror novel. A small group of people band together to find the cause of a series of brutal mutilations in California. Quickly this story develops into a fast paced thriller with the most badass werewolf i have ever read about. When the suspected lycanthrope is brought to a government facility and the press invited to see if the moon affects his demeanor, all hell breaks out. This is hard to find, but if you are a werewolf genre fan, find it. It is worth the read.

Summary: A Wildfire of the Soul
Review: Those words from "The Hyde Effect" are etched in my soul. I read this book first over 13 years ago and to this day when I think of werewolves I see the Mangler from Steve Vance's masterpiece.

The editing was weak yes. There were typos yes. But don't let those with no music in their souls fool you, this book was a heartfelt tribute to the very heart of the legend of the werewolf: power, freedom and fear.

The sequel "Shapes" while truly cool sci-fi and also great, is more that, sci-fi. This first book was raw horror with characters that BELONGED in this world, who made it real.

Suspend your disbelief and wade into Steve Vance's captivating horror classic!
