Rating: Summary: Hilarious! Review: Christopher Moore is a great author to read if you need a relaxing moment or a great laugh, and this is still my favorite of his books! If you've enjoyed any of his books.....READ THIS.....It is so so so worth it. Word to the wise, though, pick it up when you'll have time to finish it.....it's not something you'll be able to put down!
Rating: Summary: Witty, Funny, and you know, evern a good plot!!! Review: I have only read Love nun, and loved that book emmensly. Moore is a very funny writer and extreamly original. I read this book not expecting it to be as good as love nun, sure enough it was better. Moore while being funny weaves a very interesting story, His charecter devolpment for such a short book is also extreamly talented. I look foward to being able to catch up with the other moore books!!
Rating: Summary: More Moore! Review: I have read all of his books and I love every one - this one is my second favorite after Lust Lizards.
Rating: Summary: Inspired Lunacy Review: There's no message here, no great moral debate and no deep insights into the human psyche. Instead, there's a wonderfully silly tale about a 100 year old ex-semenarian, the demon he accidentally finds himself caretaker for, and just incidentally, how this leads to a battle for control of the universe in a seedy little town in California."Practical Demonkeeping" has a marvelously preposterous plot, an an insane retelling of some central biblical tales, and enough ridiculous characters to keep you smiling from start to finish- not the least of which is that aforementioned demon, who can't seem to resist chomping down an awful lot of the people he meets. A perfect book for summer beach reading.
Rating: Summary: Lacking wit Review: I found this book extremely disappointing - maybe because I was used to the wild wit of Carl Hiaasen ( if you don't know him check out his "Stormy Weather" )- so I expected Practical Demonkeeping and the other books by C. Moore to be hilarious : just look at their titles ! But I found the humor "immature" , lacking substance , the plots of his books seemed always too weak and unconvincing , "kiddie" humor...
Rating: Summary: not his best Review: This follows typical Moore pattern: 150 pages of sad-sacks in weird lives, then 50 pages of confrontation to the death or injury, with cars pulling up and screeching their brakes, people tied up, people interfering, the whole thing boiling to a clever and comical wrapping of loose ends. Moore nicely lays out diverse plot threads and brings them together. The reader's job is to stay focused until the threads merge. I prefer Moore's "Love Nun" and "Lust Lizard." They're more complex, with more depth to characters and landscape, and more fun. "Demonkeeping" is a decent lightweight read but don't go out of your way for it.
Rating: Summary: Great fun. Perfect for Terry Pratchett fans Review: The only reason why I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is so much like a Terry Pratchett book that I felt like I was reading a very good imitator in places. Strangely lighthearted for a book about a demon that eats people and the reluctant "master" that tries to keep him from it, this book has plenty to offer - strange characters, neat plot twists, and some great background mythology. The few drawbacks include the fact that the characters seem uniformly odd and that some of the more grim aspects of the story (spousal abuse, alcoholism, etc.) are glossed over as if they wandered in from another book. Besides that this book is highly entertaining. I loved the demon imitating The Exorcist because he was tired of imitating The Wizard of Oz and the sordid bar scenes.
Rating: Summary: Cute but... Review: I thought this one if Moore's was a little too cute with a little too much fluff. Still a good read but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as his other works.
Rating: Summary: Extremely funny, but quite bizarre Review: This is the thing about Christopher Moore's books: they are incredibly imaginative, but also incredibly bizarre. He has a sense of humor that can only be roughly categorized as irreverant, dark, wicked, witty, and "outside the box." He may be an acquired taste, but I doubt it. I think either you click with him or you don't. Because that's the case, the best thing to do is to read a bit from one of his books before you decide to buy it. With that out of the way, "Practical Demonkeeping" is probably the best of his books. It's much tighter in plot than its very loose sequel, "Lust Lizard." But there's not a big difference between his best and his worst; while they're all in different settings (demons, vampires, American Indian gods, Pacific islanders, or monsters), they are all basically vehicles for his bizarre humor.
Rating: Summary: creative and funny Review: Practical Demonkeeping was a very funny and unique book. While this book is not for everyone -I certainly laughed aloud on several occasions. I liked the characters and thought that it was great for a beach or bus/airplane read. This is the story of Travis and his pal Catch - the only thing wrong with this traveling duo is that they have been on the road together for 70 years - that and Catch is a demon who can't help but eat people he finds along the way. Wild and wacky and just plain funny, Practical Demonkeeping is a great read. Enjoy this book - it is a guilty pleasure.
