Summary: A really fun monster story.
Review: This silly piece of trash has some truly great moments (aka the attack scenes). Certainly it won't win any literary awards, but it should make a decent enough movie, which is what it was obviously designed for. The Joe-Bob half of me says check it out.

Summary: VESPERS gives Giant Bat Monster Books a GREAT name!
Review: To be honest, I wanted to read FATALIS but couldn't wait for it to be published. So I bought Vespers to familiarize myself with Mr. Rovin. WOW! I tore through this book faster than the bats tearing through their victims. A great summer read that'll keep you turning pages in excitement (and may even make you brush your hands through your hair a couple of times). Sure it's sci-fi and deals with giant monsters. But it's a FUN READ! Do yourself a favor and get this book!

Summary: fun read for those who love classic horror tales
Review: Vespers is a good old fashioned horror tale. But while there are many elements of the plot that are tried and true, the author manages to update a classic storyline by bringing to life the way New York would really handle a large scale bat attack. In that sense it is really more like a techno-thriller/chiller -- you get a behind-the-scenes look at how the city really works. Also Rovin takes the time to give his characters some personality and chemistry. Overall it was a fun read. Apparently Barry Sonenfeld (Men in Black) is making Vespers into a movie. It will be fun to see what he does with the story.

Summary: predictable horror story
Review: Vespers is a horror tale about bats terrorizing NYC. The plot is predicatable and the characters pretty lackluster. The flirtation/relationship between the two main characters had all the maturity and depth of a junior high courtship. The information about bats was interesting, and if you're really into these "animals become threat to man's existence" horror novels this novel is okay. On the flap it says that this is soon to be a major motion picture, and this is a rare case where I have a feeling the movie may be more entertaining than the book, because the strength of the book was its action/attack scenes.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: A fun read for Horror fans.
Review: Vespers, with its irresistable swarm of killer bats, is the kind of horror novel that you won't want to put down. The climactic ending is both exciting and original. Like many horror novels, however, the characters are not really developed enough for the reader to care what happens to them.
