Rating: Summary: a good read Review: This book is very interesting to read, that you would not want to put it down. this is one of his very best books that he has ever written.
Rating: Summary: Just a great book. Review: This book kept me up at night reading it. It was amazing how he told the story or a small town and how football can control it and the people in it. It was frightening and it kept me on the edge of my seat as i read it. A must read.
Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: This book moves fast, from beginning to end. I know it's fiction, but I can't help believe the story is real, somewhere.
Rating: Summary: Difficult to suspend disbelief Review: This is my first John Saul novel, and it did not appeal to me for several reasons. If you are an animal lover, this book is not for you. Gore is supposed to be an accoutrement to a good horror story, not necessarily a staple. In this case, people simply behaved in a sheeplike oblivious manner that was hard to believe. It is impossible to comprehend that "EVERYONE" in a small town would be so wrapped up in sports, or subject themselves to only being able to purchase health food at the supermarket. The town ended up feeling contrived and the wooden characters even more so. Only the protaganist was fleshed out to any great degree, and that always kills a story for me.John Saul seems to be very well read, and appears to do his research thoroughly, yet in this offering probably stretched credibility too far. I am not talking about the creature, or the science behind it, but rather the whole town and the way people interacted with one another. I will try another of his works hoping for less gratuitous gore, more realistic settings, and perhaps more three-dimensional characters.
Rating: Summary: My favorite John Saul book so far Review: This was a thrilling book with a great premise. It's a good example of "techno-horror." (Not as good as Dean Koontz's "Midnight," but still pretty cool.) The idea of a coach going to such a length to turn his players in "superhuman" (or rather, superinhuman) athletes seems far-fetched at first. Until you think of the Texas Cheerleader Mom case. Not to mention the steroid abuse going on in so many places. However, I can't recommend it fully because I don't think the ending lived up to the promise of the novel. Also, the deeper issues are not explored well enough. For a better book along this topic, try Christopher Pike's "Monster." Yeah, I know, it's a young adult novel. But it's one of the best YA horror novels I've read. Anne M. Marble Reviewer, All About Romance

Rating: Summary: By far the BEST BOOK ever!!!!!!! Review: This was an absolute thriller and John Saul in the master at suspense! He strings you along till you almost have it figured out, but then the plot thickens and you continue to wonder just what will happen next. The overall plot of the book is the best; it will scare you, amaze you, make you wonder, sadden you, and terrify you as the plot suddenly unfolds in the most interesting ending that will keep you begging for more!!! The characters are so developed and so real that you see them as being real and you begin to feel as if you're right there in the story. I finished this book in two days simply because I couldn't put it down! (Don't read the book at night, it's just too scary!)
Rating: Summary: I thought this was going to be scary Review: This was my first john saul book and i was very disapointed. The first 100 pages were alright but the rest of the book i was waiting for something to happen. And nothing ever did! The ending was horrible with nothing being solved and everyone being killed off. Very depressing. Also I heard this was going to be a scary, freightening read. What a joke. i have not read a Saul book since this and probably won't for a long time.

Rating: Summary: Good, but try another Saul novel first Review: This was my first time to read a John Saul novel and I have come away with mixed emotions. I think that the story had potential and it did interest me but something was missing. I'm not an expert and I don't claim to be, but I found the dialogue to be sketchy. It was not horrible, I have read horrible dialogue, but simple. I'm not saying he should have used words better suited for an college term paper, it just seemed too simple. The characters were well suited for their use of language, however. I never actually cared for the characters and therefore what happened to them made me feel indifferent. They seemed to be hollow and stereotypical. Maybe this is what Saul was striving for to give it the old it could happen to anyone feel but it turned me off. I felt like I was reading an mystery for "young adults." I still enjoyed the basic story though and it kept me going till the end which is a better ending than most. It wasn't cut and dry and let you know that the story went on after you closed the book. I will try another of his books because not only have I heard good things but his ideas are very entertaining which is how books should be. He obviously doesn't write to write but to tell a story. I wouldn't reccomend reading this one but finding one that has been better recieved by someone you know.
