Summary: I Really enjoyed this book, a great, fast read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: I got this book on a gamble, at the recommendation of Stephen King and with the disclaimer that Mr. Little had received the Bram Stoker award. Surprisingly, he didn't receive that award for this book. Such a shame. This book is actually scary folks, just imagine your local neighborhood Wal-mart is run by sinister forces!!!!!!! This is a great way to say, "The hell with t.v., I'm reading here!" This guy is gonna be a big name in the horror field so check his stuff out, but if you haven't read this book yet, start here. And remember, somebody has to stock those shelves at your favorite STORE!!!!!

Summary: First time reading a Bentley Little book and i enjoyed it
Review: If the reader can get over the obvious far fetched moments in this book it is a good read. The idea itself of a major chain store taking over a small town is not so far fetched in itself and is nerve racking to think about. I just got The House today and look forward to starting it. Little is certainly twisted. I just hope that he is not like Koontz where all the books are basically the same with just the names changed.

Summary: Really good book alot of fun to read
Review: I found this book to be fast-paced,fun and action-packed.I found myself caring about the characters alot. The plot was believable and kept me enthralled for hours.I think that some of the incidence that happened in the book were a little far-fetched and I was amazed at how much THE STORE actually got away with, but who knows maybe that really can happen.I felt though at the end of the book the author was running out of ideas as how to finish the story, leaving me with the feeling that there should have been more to add at the end. I was surprised also how the main character changed his mind so quickly and decided to join them in the end, sort of if you can't beat em join em attitude. But I enjoyed the book all the same and will be reading THE MAILMAN next.

Summary: Who owns YOUR ISP?
Review: I have never been scared by anything I've read by Stephen King, supposedly the top writer in the horror genre, so I assumed, stupidly, that this book wouldn't scare me. I was so wrong.

My living a few blocks from a much-protested WalMart store made this plot seem interesting, but I never anticipated all the feelings _The Store_ brought up in me. I have never felt this way about a book before--my skin crawling, afraid to find out what happens next, yet completely unable to stop reading. At times I felt like crying, just because the tension mounts so inexorably--even though at many points I already KNEW what was going to happen!

This book isn't for everyone. If upon reading all these plot synopses and reviews, your immediate response is "Oh come ON, they couldn't get away with that!!" you might want to pass this book by. _The Store_ is geared more, I think, to those of us for whom it's NOT hard to imagine, who perhaps find some modern political and societal trends alarmingly "slippery slope"ish. I suspect this book will scare THAT sort of thinker more than any ghost, alien, or demon.

One lone caveat: This book might not be a good choice for persons with very strong sensitivities to sexual assault/abuse issues. Even I, who generally doesn't react strongly to such fictional depictions, was surprised at how upsetting I found some things in here (even though I didn't feel they were offensively gratuitous). There are some portrayals of healthy sexuality here, but generally sexual imagery is used to disturb and frighten. Be warned.

Summary: Typical Bentley Little Fare
Review: This one's pretty good. Kind of reminds you of the businesses that manage to put smaller companies out of business, only this involves the supernatural. The Store has everything, even illegal items. And it spreads its evil through a chain of Stores. However, this is a Bentley Little novel, which makes it predictable. Every Bentley Little novel, usually about halfway through, turns into chaos. Everybody goes mad, killing each other, having wild sex, and causing trouble in general. No matter the plot, that's how it ends.

Summary: IF MR. WALTON EVER LOST HIS MIND, THIS COULD HAPPEN!!!
Review: Boy, was this book ever TWISTED!!! Mr. Little starts out slow, but the middle and the end keep you zooming towards the climax like a car w/ no breaks going downhill. The concept of psycho managers, "initiations" instead of regular hiring procedures...not to mention the whole town being taken over by a DAMN RETAIL OUTLET!!! the story lost steam at the end though, because the main character lost his vigilance and did "cross over", no matter what he may have been telling himself he was doing. And there was no real resolution about what happened to the other Store victims: did the lady ever get the baby back? Did Bill ever get with the other shop owners and make restitution to any of them? And what was it with the animals dropping like flies anyway? In the end though, "The Store" is a great, enthralling read, and does make sly commentary on local government and businesses. (The end was NASTY though: did he really have to go there, and is that REALLY possible? I know it was dark and everything, but DAMN!!!) I'm looking forward to reading more offerings of Mr. Little. If you like being scared and repulsed without being tramatized for life, "The Store" is a good choice.

Summary: Twin Peaks meets The X-Files... A GREAT READ!
Review: The reader from Nevada needs to understand that this is FICTION. In Bentley's world, anything can happen! If you accept the premise of a wealthy chain of stores slowly taking over the country (even though it's slowly happening now...Microsoft, hint hint) you'll love it. Graphic scenes, fast paced action, and characters you CARE ABOUT make this a must for horror fans. Not terribly scary, but sooooo much fun!

Summary: Keeps You Hooked-But Leaves you Wanting!
Review: I was enthralled throughout this book, unlike some of the other reviewers, I don't read horror books for their literary value, but more for their shocking simplicity. This book kept me shocked. I really did love it, but must admit that the ending was a little too pat. I would have preferred a more substantial finish but other than this it was WELL WORTH THE READ!

Summary: Total rubbish
Review: I just finished this book and although I found the concept of it intriguing and scary, the book as a whole was laughable rather than frightening. As if a store could take a newborn baby from her mother in the hospital because they missed a couple of payments on their microwave! Where was the President of the United States, police forces in other counties/states, the media? I enjoy suspense and horror novels but only if they're in the realm of reality, which this whole book was not.

Summary: Disappointing work from a talented writer
Review: I picked up a copy of THE STORE after having read some superb short stories by Mr. Little, hoping to find more of the originality and literary command he had previously displayed. I was sorely disappointed. The book is a stifling mess. There is nothing here to interest any discerning fan of horror. I hope his next efforts are up to the levels of talent and craft he has previously shown. This book is, quite simply, dull.
