Summary: A great super natural thriller
Review: I thought Due's book was fantastic. This is the first work of hers that I have read, but it certainly will not be the last. The book features Hilton James, who suffers from nightmares. He almost drowned at age 8, but was fortunately rescued by his grandmother "Nanna", who dies in her rescuing of Hilton. Although Hilton survives, his psyche becomes progrssively damaged with each occurence of these nightmares. They go away for a while (5 years), but come back when his wife DeDe (a newly elected District Court Judge) starts receiving death threats from a white racist. Hilton begins having trouble distinguishing his "dreams" from reality as the two start to meld together. This was an eerrie, thrilling tale that kept me interested throughout the entire book. If you enjoy super natural thrillers, then this one is a must read.

Summary: Scary
Review: I was scared I was gonna have terrible dreams after reading this book. I throught it was a good book, although I enjoyed her second one better. I couldn't quite decide what the ending meant.

Summary: PRETTY IMPRESSIVE
Review: I WAS SOMEWHAT HESITANT TO PURCHASE THIS NOVEL BASED ON THE SUBJECT MATTER HOWEVER I HAD READ 'THE BLACK ROSE' AND WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE WRITING SO I TOOK A CHANCE. THIS BOOK IS ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD. IT'S NOT OFTEN THAT A BOOK ABOUT THE EXISTENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH, REALITY AND FANTASY IS WRITTEN BY AN AFRICAN AMERICAN AUTHOR. THE BEST PART ABOUT THE BOOK WAS THAT IT WAS WRITTEN IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE READER NEVER KNEW WHETHER THE EVENTS WERE REAL OR A BYPRODUCT OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS IMAGINATION...REALITY OR FANTASY. THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THE BOOK IS TO IMAGINE THAT IT IS TOLD FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SOMEONE SUFFERING FROM A MENTAL DISEASE SUCH AS PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA. ONE NEVER KNOWS IF IT IS REALITY OR FANTASY. THE NOVEL ALSO COULD BE DESCRIBED AS SURREAL. ALL IN ALL, THOUGHT IT WAS A VERY CREATIVE WAY TO TELL A STORY AND IT ALWAYS KEPT THE READER GUESSING. IF YOU LIKE DEAN KOONTZ AND STEPHEN KING NOVELS, THIS IS SIMILIAR BUT WITH AN AFRICAN AMERICAN TWIST. I LOOK FORWARD TO READING 'MY SOUL TO KEEP' WHICH I ORDERED BEFORE I COMPLETED THIS NOVEL. THE AUTHOR DID A GOOD JOB ON THIS NOVEL

Summary: EXCITING, YET Confusing
Review: I was tantilized by this book. It started really good and got really exciting and then it got a little boring and then it just went to downright confusing. I am glad Hilton didn't have a bad ending, but I never understood what all his turmoil was about. I read 'My Soul to Keep' and both of these books were excellently written, but they both had weak endings. I would like to see a strong ending for a really good book. It was a good read.

Summary: Disappointing after "My Soul To Keep"
Review: I was very disappointed in "The Between" after reading, "My Soul To Keep". My book club read "My Soul To Keep" and it received great reviews. I did not know what the book was about. I read it all the way through on a flight from Paris to San Francisco. So, I ran out to get , "The Between" when I landed...I found it to be a very slow developing plot. Also, I did not find the book to be scarry. I stuck through to the end and was not satisfied with that either! I do find Tananarive Due to be a very talented writer. I look forward to her next novel! I definitely recommend "My Soul To Keep"!

Summary: As Good as it Gets
Review: I've read both of Tananarive's books, and I think that they're both extremely well written.

She writes in a way that is engaging, fresh, never artificial, and at turns, funny, sexy, sad.....

She also makes you think, which doesn't happen as often as it should with a lot of today's African-American fiction.

Her novels are incredibly visual also; it's almost impossible not to see the action unfold while you are reading.

Finally, Ms. Due knows how to tell a satisfying story. I had the pleasure to take an English class with her my senior year in college, and I can say that she puts a lot of time, effort, and careful research into her work.

I'm just waiting to meet Dawit and Jessica again.

Summary: Slowly but surely a great read
Review: I, like so many others I see, first read her second novel "My Soul to Keep." I LOVED it and was delighted to find another book of hers out there. Though it was a bit slow to me at first, I gradually got hooked as I took the bait wondering what had happened to Nana. Though I was more caught up in her 2nd book, this was well worth my time and so Ms. Due has gained a new fan. Like most of Stephen King's works, I will buy her books automatically expecting to love it. The ending left a little to be desired but I was satisfied nonetheless. Can't wait for the next novel. Just please - leave Dawit (well enough) alone and go for something new.

Summary: THE BETWEEN
Review: In THE BETWEEN, Tananarive Due weaves time, dreams and reality together to form an interesting and very unusual story. Hilton James, a married father of two, thinks something is wrong with him because he can't distinguish what's really happening to him and what he's imagining. As the story unfolds, the reader wonders if Hilton is really alive of did he drown as a child, yet somehow manage to maintain a body. Also, he appears to be stalked by a man born on the same date as himself.

THE BETWEEN is hard to figure out. It's a must-read for those who believe in the para normal and the out of body experiences. It's listed in the "horror" category, but that label is too strong.

The only negative thing about the this book was the short chapters. It wasn't a large book, yet some of the chapters were only one page and I didn't see the distinction when changing from some of the chapters to the next.

Summary: Chilling and thrilling tale
Review: It is usually pretty easy to differentiate an author's first work from their subsequent works. I read Tananarive Due's My Soul To Keep first and finished The Between months later ... They were equally superb.

The Between is a suspenseful first novel which chronicles the confusing life (death?) of Hilton, a man who, at age 8, nearly drowned but was saved by his grandmother. As an adult he suffers from horrendous nightmares and soon becomes unable to distinguish them from his waking hours. Coupled with having to protect his family from a psychotic, racist, ex-convict who is after his prosecutor wife, Hilton and the reader are tossed into a world of dreams/reality, life/death, sanity/insanity ... death/life.

This was a chilling and thrilling tale. I am usually not one who automatically sees movie potential in a book but I think this one would be a tortuous theme for the silver screen.

Summary: Interesting, but no "My Soul to Keep"
Review: Let me say that I read "My Soul to Keep" first and found it to be an excellent, couldn't put down, book! So, I expected the same in "The Between". What I found was a good book with interesting twists and turns, never really understanding or figuring out what was going on... however, can't put it down, because you're hoping that the next page or chapter will reveal the answer to your questions...This didn't happen.. although I did enjoy reading "The Between", I was very disappointed by the ending. The last page is a big question mark for me. What happened? I still don't know. I am confused and if anyone can help me out with the last page, I'd appreciate it greatly. I'm waiting on another novel by Ms. Due... hopefully more along the lines of "My Soul to Keep"...
