Rating: Summary: Vampire-The Revision Review: I have been a vampire" The Masquarade player ever since the first printing of the first edition of this book. While this is a wonderfull book combining every clan and discipline into one book it lacks the wonderfull art of the first edition. The first edition had the horror, the mystery, and the romance of what the game represented.. And now the art work.. seems to represent only the horror of this aluring book. Beyond that though this is a wonderfull update to the old book allowing a player to enjoy the WoD in it's most modern form. ENJOY!
Rating: Summary: White Wolf Does It Again, But Not So Hot This Time Around. Review: Of the various incarnations of Vampire: The Masquerade editions I've gone through, I really didn't like this one. It shouldn't matter really but I didn't quite like the artwork in this one. It's descent but the art was better in previous editions. The same rules and character archetypes remain but my only complaint is the art and it seems like no one is really playing live roleplaying games anymore.
Rating: Summary: The Start of RPGing for me Review: Vampire is a very interesting game. When I was in 4th Grade me and my friends used to make up games in our heads but something was lacking a cohesive setting. By the time I was in 7th Grade we decided to buy an RPG book, just to get the gist of things. We ended up buing Vampire, and I must say it is great! I've bought 40 other books by White-Wolf in the last few years. This game is a modern game in the Modern World, not a D&D type of Fantasy. Vampires are real in this game, they live in all the major cities, they pull the strings of politics. They hide from Humanity though, because they fear discovery. Yet they have to interact with humans, because as Vampires they eternally need blood to survive and even more to power their dark powers. Vampires are arranged into clans, 13 to be exact all created by Ancient founders. These clans are divided into three groups. The first is the Camarilla, most obsessed with secrecy and having 7 of the Vampire clans. The next is the Sabbat, a group of Vampires who believe they should rule humanity and arch-Rivals of the Camarilla. They only consist of two clans but their are other clan members who have decided to join. Finally their are 4 Independent clans who try to avoid keeping any alligence to anyone. The Rules of this game are simple as well. All a person needs is a copy of the sheets, a pencil and maybe ten 10-sided dice. The rule system is rather simple and the game doesn't revolve around pointless hours of combat but story purposes. This adds more enjoyment to the game, if your interested in weaving a story. The Vampire game is a good introduction to White-Wolf RPG's and it is not only an interesting play, it is an interesting read as well. I have bought many books just to read them, and even if you don't have a group, their is a huge online community.
Rating: Summary: An elegant yet complex RPG with a dark twist Review: Being a seasoned RPG player (20 years + exp.) I'm always interested to try new games on the market. Since a few years a buzz had been starting on the internet and among RPG fan about this new vampire horror game. When they put the second edition out, I decided it was past time that I check it out. I'm certainly glad I did! The game is simple (only using 10 sided dice and very easy character advancement)it's also skill based. The greatest achievement of this game is in it's ability to convey a mood of gothic horror "à la perfection (perfectly)" something no other RPG had been able to achieve successfully in the past. This success may be due to the "mature language and content of the game", the terrific illustrations all through the book or to the well written descriptions of the different fiends and all their complex powers. For whatever reason there's a chilling mood of wickedness, perversity and dark horror all through the book. My only complaint has to do with the long historic background in the book. Having studied history for a while in university, I find that the evolution of vampire through history section at the end of the volume doesn't really add anything, all they do is make a quick resume of all the different time period and adding the word vampire in it... not really necessary... All in all it still a great book with magnificient illustration and a well written interesting content. I would recomend this game not only to RPG players but to vampire lovers everywhere !!!
Rating: Summary: Setting? Amazing. Mechanics? Abysmal Review: I started playing Vampire back in the the day. 1st ED. And I stuck with it through it's incarnations and vast assortment of clan books and added paraphenalia. But I began to realize that there was something about the game that just bugged the heck out of me and that realization was that while the setting was incredibly well crafted (As long as you don't try to shoe-horn in any other White Wolf settings, conflicts then occur), the actual game mechanics were at best weak with my usual result being a sad shake of the head after a die roll and a muttered, "Oh, now THAT was realistic." This may be the only game where based on die rolls, you can put a gun in someone's mouth, pull the trigger, and they walk away just fine. As time has gone on, I've gotten even more discouraged with the broken die-pool systems to the point that the setting just can't cut it anymore. If you want flash and angst, this is your game. If you want a slight dose of reality, look to HERO, Gurps, heck, even d20 first.
Rating: Summary: grate gam play Review: I am a gm and I love this book
Rating: Summary: Not quite what it used to be Review: As much as I enjoy having everything in one volume, I miss the second edition. The third edition just lacks soul. Yes, you can play the same chronicles on it, and technically there is not that much that is different, the details often add so much. Whereas third edition is very much a rulebook, second edition had mood and feeling to spare. The artwork is too cartoonish (the clan section looks like it belongs in a manga)and the writing gives none of the true feeling of the genre. This idea follows through with most of the things that White Wolf has put out in the past few years, ever since Mark Rein-Hagen left. After reading the second edition for the first time, I was left with the impression of something that could truly be there, a world out of sight, with monsters in the shadows. I bought into the World of Darkness, and the Gothic-Punk milieu, but the current string of writers don't seem to be doing more than paying lip service to the concept. For those who are new to Role-Playing and are intersted in Vampire, I do not wish to scare you off; for all my complaints, the third edition is a good rulebook. For inspiration, look elsewhere though. Search the used bookstores for stuff put out by White Wolf before 1998.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely amazing... Review: I got my V:tM sourcebook several months ago, in either March or April... I have read it and used it so excessively that the cover has fallen off, but I still love this book... Even for those who don't want to play the game, it's a fascinating new look at vampires, or Kindred as they may be called. Ever since I started playing in an online campaign, I've been absolutely hooked on Vampire... I'd recommend this book to anyone who had even the slightest intrest in Vampires, even if you're not into roleplaying... Amazing.
Rating: Summary: GANGREL, CHRISTIAN, & EDGE Review: The Story of the BROOD! Those who know it are a part of it. Those who aren't don't understand it. Read the book to see what it all means!
