Rating: Summary: Lots of Bloodshed Very Little Grue Review: The most chilling moment in this book happens in the first quarter and it's a true hair raiser, which tells me that Owl Goingback does know what scares you. Unfortunately, after this chilling moment, the story goes back to business as usual-- body count. Somehow I expected better from a Bram Stoker Award Winner. An unexpected earthquake wakes up a monstrous creature who has been napping in a cave in the center of the country. He starts looking for a late night snack. 20 cows, a bull, a deer, a dog, two rednecks, a farmer and a teenager later and I'm almost as comotose as the monster was for millenium. Very few of the characters are more than two dimensional targets set up for the monster to take down. This book fails at sustained horror. The best horror novels are first of all well written books with a tight plot, characterization, and good story telling. The fear factor arises from a combination of many elements in the story, so there is not one path to scaring the reader, but the author cannot play one note over and over again and expect the reader to respond with the same amount of fear each time.
Rating: Summary: Yikes Review: This book scared the hell out of me. I am an avid camper and the story makes me think twice about going in the woods again. I had trouble setting the book down; I had to see what happend next. If you injoy excitement you'll get a real kick in the pants from Crota.
Rating: Summary: Very entertaining. Review: This is my frist time reading anything by Owl Goingback. Needless to say that I'm very impressed. A terror has woken up in a small town, and has the ability to rip apart (violently) anything in its path. No moden weapons of today can destroy the Crota. It's up to Skip, a local sheriff and a Natiave American, Jay Little Hawk to use the Navative American ancestory to defeat the Crota. Goingback is a fantastic writer. The characters he has created seem real and not flat the way some writers are. His writing style is one that's easy to read. The reader won't get lost in long paragraphs and longer description. Goingback get's right to the point. I liked how Goingback used his Natative American history to bring the reader in to the nataive American world and legend. The book it'self was pretty violent, but I couldn't put down. It was that good. This is the first book I read by Goingback, and I plan to read the rest of his books. If they're as good as this, he has me hooked. I urge you to go out and get this book. It's a quick read and I had a hard time putting it down.
Rating: Summary: Legend and tradition, courage and faith. Review: Well, I have to say that I was surprised, because I originally didn't intend to finish it. I gave it about 50 pages, thought it was going to be another slasher book, picked it up again, and gave it 50 more pages. Then I realized why it won the Bram Stoker award. Unfortunately, I think that there will be people who have their prejudices about an Indian author. I challenge those people to overcome them, and to take this on with an open mind. You can easily see that Owl Goingback has his beliefs, and isn't ashamed of his heritage. Something I respect.
So yeah, this will have a fair share of bloodshed, but look for something more in the process. Take in the legend of the Crota. Read about great Indians such as Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa. If you know your history worth a lick, those aren't made up Indian names. They are as real as you and me, and to people such as Owl Goingback, they mean more than just names and campfire stories.
Get ready for fun adventure! Get ready to feel something, and don't be afraid to say that you actually enjoy it! Be like Sheriff Skip Harding, and have faith. Take on the Crota, and don't miss out!! Mr. Goingback, I'll be looking for more of your work. YOU can have faith in that.
