Rating: Summary: Note to Dean: more sleep, less alcohol. Review: Bad, bad, bad.The really awful thing about this book is that it actually starts relatively strong (for Dean R. Koonz-Master of Shlock). Unfortunately, after about the first 20 pages, the impression begins to form that Koonz really doesn't know where he's going with the story. As the reader gets deeper and deeper into this pile of manure, a mental image of an eight year old DRK saying to you "but she's a MAGIC waitress" springs spontaniously to mind. This is followed by statements like "but it's a MAGIC radio" and "he's a MAGIC doggy." Some have claimed that Koonz wrote this book this badly intentionally and call this a "horror/comedy spoof" or some such. I think it's a lot more likely that even Koonz realized that by the end of this book he hadn't even achieved his low standards for a horror story and like a kid on the basketball court who has just missed an easy shot, now claims that he was actually aiming for the backboard. Koonz is almost always bad, but this stands out as one of his worst ever. Even his most loyal fans should skip it.
Rating: Summary: How can so many people love this book? Too weird! Review: This is the 3rd Dean Koontz book I've read, and I have to say that it is one of his worst. I have read many other really good, suspensful books (Watchers, The Door to December) that by far surpass this book. I barely even finished it (took me 3 months). I would much rather read a book about some crazed psycopath on the loose (God help me!) than to read about some alien thing hidden inside a doll. I was very disappointed. It just slowly dragged on and on, until I figured I might as well put the book down before I fall asleep with the it in my hands and loose the page I'm on. I've found that was the biggest concern I had, falling asleep. I hope Dean Koontz never writes another novel like this again!
Rating: Summary: Delightfully fun adventure! Review: I got the audio book which combined the writing talent of Dean R. Koontz with the incredible vocal talents of one of my favorite actors,B.D. Wong. Tick Tock was a delightful rollercoaster of magic, mothers, monsters, mayhem and, oh yes..UFO's! A great read and fun time for anyone!
Rating: Summary: A really fun read! Review: I have been a big Koontz fan for quite a while and have always appreciated that he makes his novels fun to read by including humor to lighten the suspense. Tick Tock takes the humor and runs with it. I laughed out loud, and enjoyed it so much I read it again AND listened to it on tape. Definitly not the same as Koontz's other works, but it wasn't suposed to be. Tick Tock probably should not be the first Koontz novel you read (because it is so different from all his other works) but true fans will enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Brilliant! Review: This is only the second Dean Koontz novel I've read, and I loved it! I enjoy classic films, and this novel brought me right back to the Grant/Hepburn films that I love the most! The characters are quirky and fun to be around, the writing was humorous, and the monster (while not the most unique horror monster) was truly scary! I've read some of the other reviews that say this was not up to Koontz's usual quality. My experience with Dean Koontz may be limited, but this book is still outstanding. I hope he writes more like Tick Tock!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Review: I listened to this book on audio tape and the reader brought the characters alive. I had co-workers passing my cubicle, raising their brows at the insane laughter eminating from within. This is a sensational book and I look forward to reading (or listening to) more stories by this author!
Rating: Summary: The easiest read I have ever experienced! Review: Finally an author like Koontz shows he posesses a sense of humor. Tick Toc, although tounge in cheek, simply grabs the reader and takes them on a wild, sometimes campy, ride that you will not want to stop until you reach the end of the line. Others may judge Koontz for writing this book, but I for one am glad he did. It really shows that another side of his talent and brilliance. This is definatly one that you must experience to appreciate.
Rating: Summary: A fun take on what Koontz knows to be his alley. Review: I should probably say first that I'm Asian American, so maybe some of those elements in the story touched me more than they will others of another heritage. But in general, I think Koontz succeeded admirably in what he set out to do--writing a novel that's genuinely scary in places while never losing sight of the "screwball comedy" genre, all at a nice, fast pace. He even was mostly accurate in characterizing the immigrant Asian culture. This shouldn't be your first choice if you like your horror to be unrelentingly terrifying and pessimistic, unleavened by even a dash of humor; I think this novel is more for tried-and-true Koontz fans who, by now, are trusting enough to give a try to whatever new tack he wishes to take. Count me in!
Rating: Summary: Very Comedic Review: Being an avid Koontz fan, and one who commutes about one hour each way for work, I found listening to this that I often found myself laughing and the story very predictable. By far, this was not one of his better books.
