Summary: Enemies become Friends
Review: A Review by Sidne

Selwyn is an eighteen-year old boy struggling to prove his innocence of murder. Anora, a young woman Selwyn proposed to was devastated. She declined Selwyn's proposal and accepted Farolds (the man Selwyn was accused of murdering). Selwyn was dragged from his family and was driven into a cave with Farolds body. He was tied to a rock nearby. Just when he was sure he would die he saw a bright green glowing light. He had no idea what it was and didn't care, whether angel or ghost he just hoped it could prove his innocence.

One thing I didn't enjoy about the book, 'Never Trust a Dead Man', was that the main character, Selwyn was never descriptive. He never clearly described how he felt about the situation he was in. The only description he gave was when he was in the cave and was describing how dark and damp it was. If I could give suggestions for the book I would have to describe how Selywn thought about his family, Anora, or how he felt about being accused of murder. I did however, enjoy the humor in the book. It took a dark fantasy into a humorous mystery. It made Farolds character seem more likable instead of dark, the author turned death into humor. Another thing I liked about the book was that the author added magic. It expanded the thinking of the story and made you think about what you would do in Selwyn's situation, since he had the ability to acquire the magic.

I enjoyed the book. I thought it was a fun mystical adventure. I wouldn't recommend this book for readers that enjoy high action and surprises. This is a good book however for light readers that enjoy a good fiction.

Summary: Now My Favorite Book
Review: I am about 2-3ds into this book. It is now my favorite book no matter what happens at the end. Poor 17-year old Selwyn is accused of murder because he loved a girl Farold loved. After Selwyn found out that the girl had chosen Farold to be her husband Farold was found dead and stabbed in the back;with Selwyn's knife! Some villigers put him to death in a place he would starve. He met a witch there and now they are trying to figure out who the REAL murderer is. GREAT BOOK!

Summary: A fun read; A pleasure to read; Was never boring
Review: I immediately liked the characters. Some situations they were in were frightful. And other situtaions were funny. A good combination in a book. The mystery was compelling and I didn't have a clue who was the murderer. It was not distasteful, or vulgar. The witch was harmless, but of course had a bag of spells (like all witch characters do, or they wouldn't be witches)

I recommend it.

Summary: Her best book yet! A must-buy from a wonderful author!
Review: I've always been a fan of Vivian Vande Velde. For those of you who don't know, she writes YA and J books, most fantasy, one vampire book, and a couple of historical ghost stories. She's very prolific--I think she had three hardbacks(at least three that my library purchased) published last year, and I'm slowly attempting to catch up with them all.

Her newest book is called "Never Trust a Dead Man", and I think it is her best one yet. It's billed as a "Mystery-Horror-Comedy about Love and Life After Death. Sort of." It's definitely a mystery, there is some horror and slight fantasy elements, and plenty of comedy. If you don't buy this book, check it out at the library, just to read the end of Chapter 13. Luckily, I was on break when I read that part, or else I would have been laughing in front of the whole library. There's also a very interesting punishment for murder, too.

Summary: A Four Star Book
Review: In this book, a boy named Selwyn is wrongfully accused of killing a boy Farold (both of them around the age of seventeen). All of the people in the small town of Pewyth think that Selwyn killed Farold because both of them loved the same woman (Anoral) but she loved Farold. As a punishment of his wrongfully accused murder, Selwyn was sent to the burial caves to die with the dead Farold with him. When he was waiting to die, a witch names Elswyth came and helped him get out of the cave for a price of years of his life. During these years he had to work for her. Elswyth disguises Selwyn and Farold so they can go find out who really killed Farold, because Farold knows that he didn't kill him. Selwyn, disguised as a pilgrim, is rejected from the town because no one thinks that he is a good person. Farold, who is a bat finds out information that might be helpful, but most of it isn't. When Farold reviels some shocking information that he forgot to tell Selwyn, they have almost found out who killed him. When they uncovered who really killed Farold, I was in shock. I didn't even think that that person was a suspect, let alone the one who actually killed Farold. I would definitely recommend this book to other people. If you are a person who likes to read mystery books, then this is a good book. If you are a person who likes to read suspenseful books, then this is a good book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read in general.
