Familiar and Haunting: Collected Stories

Review: In eighth grade, Mr. Barrington always assigned us creepy stories, like Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." He should have had this book. Its first half comprises stories about the everyday lives of children in Great Britain, but the second half of the book consists of Pearce's own creepy stories. The ones I had read before, I remembered in the first paragraph, or even by the title, though I read them ten years ago or more. None is enough to give one nightmares, but all are page-turners. Very satisfying.
