Rating: Summary: Good interpretation of the Crow mythology Review: Poppy Z. Brite does an interesting exploration of "The Dark Side" using The Crow as her vehicle. A good read for those of us interested in learning more about the darker realities of the human soul. She quotes the priest who said Mass at Mapplethorpe's funeral -- that quote alone is worthy of deep reflection and the price of the book. An excellent addition to Poppy's catalog.
Rating: Summary: Crows Have Returned Review: The crow lazarus heart was a interesting spin off of the original Crow, I like this book because it delt with issues that could end up happening in the nearby future. I think that the idea of having a "Homosexual " main charater was a change from the plain good looking guy that comes back and takes revenge on his unfair death. Though the explaination of the book (the details) ran on to long, however, i liked the fact that you had to learn about every charater before the story began, so you would have closer feelings toward them, thus you would get into the book more. I look foward to purchasing the rest of the crow series and hopefully starting my own book. "The Crow_Dark Days", I think i was going to have this book be about a girl named "Dawn" that get's bured alive with three of her friends, then comes back to avenge their deaths and to tell her lover that she loves him.
Rating: Summary: Poppy Z brite is brilliant Review: The Crow was originally an incredible story that Poppy Z Brite not only writes with the same intensity and anger as the original but adds a more current theme. Hatred for gay men. Not only does this bring a different edge to the story but makes the triumphs of the crow character that much more thrilling. The gore is a little too much it takes a little bit away from the love story. You can almost feel the love between the main character and the dead lover. It's a beautiful story of love torn apart by hate and the revenge that follows.
Rating: Summary: The Crow: The Lazarus Heart Review: The Crow: The Lazarus Heart was a very interesting book to read. I like the fact that The Crow came back and not really knowing why he's come back until it was close to the end of the book. He is one stubborn fellow. The only flaw that I had with the book is that the writer tended to bounce to soon between each character and it seemed to me that she centered it to much around the sister of Jared Poe's lover. I am not saying she is not a bad writer, Mrs. Brite had me glued to the book til the very end. The crow itself seemed to have her own little personality of it's own and that's anthor part I liked.
Rating: Summary: This dark "love" story is disturbingly intriguing Review: The Lazareth's Heart by Poppy Z. Brite, was in the spirit of other books she had written. This book was based on the the dark comic, The Crow, by James O'Barr. The Lazareths Heart is a bit difficult to follow, because the chapters alternate between differant characters. As the book progresses, the stories tie together. Poppy throws in a few clues and things to think about along the way. This book was about revenge, lust and a deep love that not even death can take away. It shows that the pain from a love taken away from you is strong enough to take over everything. This book was very well written. I dont reccomend it for younger readers as it touches on the subjects of homosexual relationships, transgender and necrophilia. I strongly reccomend it for mature readers though. I wasnt able to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Dark, gory venegance - a bit too gory, in fact... Review: The Lazarus Heart is a really good, if somewhat short, novel set in the dark realms of The Crow. The characters, especially the twins, are as usual very distinct and interesting, just as the dialog between them. The story is also great, as you really get the feeling that the return to life for venegance is very justified. But, unfortunately, I think much of the eerie feeling always present when reading her work is ruined by the long and detailed descriptions of the numerous dissections. Not that they are all that scary, they just seem...out of place in her work. As finding a bit of a slimy kidney in a glass of dark, rich velvet-red wine, somehow. But it's definitly worth bying, though, as it is far better than "Exuisite Corpse". And the end's pretty good, too...
Rating: Summary: Dark and Beautiful Review: The Lazarus Heart is the only novel I have read by Poppy Z. Brite. I came upon making this review when I was here looking to purchase more. This was a truly amazing book- one of the only ones I have read that can so perfectly blend a beautiful love story with a very disturbing plot. Her descriptions were graphic, real, and deeply moving. I loved the character Lucrece and the seeting- gothic New Orleans. I recommend this book with with all of my (dark) heart. It brought me through many nights and made me want to never leave the velvet blackness of New Orleans it described. Nevermore.
Rating: Summary: A Great Horror Novel Review: The problem with the concept of these CROW novels that are going to be coming out is that the mythos has been so prevalent through comics and movies that the original motive of the idea has been so watered down, it would seem to lose its impact in each succeeding volume. That is the biggest obstacle to the writers who accept this challenge.Poppy Z. Brite meets and supersedes all of these problems and actually flourishes under the tight reins she was given as guidelines for using this licensed character. Ms. Brite puts The Crow in her familiar, if alluring, New Orleans with Jared Poe, a photographer based a bit on Robert Mapplethorpe, an artist who is pushing the envelope of kinky. At one of his shows, he meets Benjamin and his transsexual twin, Lucrece. They make a fearsome threesome...until somebody murders one of them, another is found guilty of that murder and dies on Death Row and the other, with her guilt/grief, calls back the "innocent" Death Rower to reek revenge on all of those responsible. The writing is poetic, the story captivating and Lucrece is Brite's first true "female" star (if you don't count Courtney Love) to evolve into a serious character. No gore is spared when needed and Poppy has mastered the art of moving from present to past through flashback scenes that are so real, I actually had to stop reading at work for a while because NOTHING was getting done! Ms. Brite has accomplished something only a few gifted writers can; using a limiting character and mythology that's been so overexposed it seems to cry out for monotony, and just kick its butt to make it your own unique and lasting own. Most Highest Recommendation! END
Rating: Summary: Rather good addition to the dark theme of the crow Review: the story is a little hard to get used to at first but at least it takes a departure from the str8 white male. i think i'll go back and read it again..:)
Rating: Summary: Brite Creates a Great New Addition to THE CROW Franchise Review: The was the first book I read by Poppy Z. Brite, and I do not regret it one bit. I recognized the name, but the main reason I bought it was that it was a The Crow novel that didnt cost 13-20 bucks. Brite's dark style of writing and chracterization was great. She went a little away from the Crow mythos, but did a great job none the less. I love all of her referances to Edgar Allen Poe and the main charater's (a crow and RAVEN are relatives)were interesting. But going away from The Crow mythos was probably her only flaw. This inspired me to test her other stuff out, so I read Lost Souls, which was really great. I would definately suggest this one.
