Rating: Summary: One of the best novels I have read in a long time Review: What I truly like about this novel is that from the very beginning until the end, the characters of the story are constantly within dangers' grasp, making this one a page turner. There is also an element of mystery for the characters, the reader finds out a little more about them as the story unfolds, rather like pieces of a puzzle that forms a picture in the end. The author very cleverly intertwines the danger and suspence with the characters' obscurity, which I felt was the essence of the story.
Rating: Summary: better than STRANGERS, better than WATCHERS ! Review: This is Dean Koontz's best book yet. If you love Koontz, like most of us do, you will really love DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART. Shame on Booklist for implying that Dean Koontz lacks style. Shame on someone for saying he is too descriptive. Kontz's style is inimical. He is Steven King, Edgar Allen Poe, Mr. Greenjeans, and Hollywood all wrapped into one. Dean Koontz writes suspense. Dean Koontz writes "Never More". Dean Koontz writes placid and languid sunny California afternoons populated by luscious flora and fauna. Then Dean Koontz writes sheer blood curdling psycho horror much worse than screeching his nails across the blackboard. The sky will turn from bright and sunny to black and demonic. Your eyes will jump out of their sockets. Your hair will stand strands up. You'll want to wretch, scream and run away in terror. But you won't be able to. You can't. You must read on. I don't know if all his fans feel this way but personally I prefer when Koontz writes the techno-thriller and stays away from the ghosts and goblins. His stories are best from me when he writes little character centric vinettes and unfolds his tale from the vantage point of multiple characters. The quintessential example is STRANGERS wherein half a dozen people who do not know one another are all having the same nightmare. That is nightmare - singular. And EVERYONE loves Watche. Is it just because of that dog? I think not. But in DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART, Koontz has outdone himself. This one really BLEEDS. And talk about your psychos. This one has several rivalling each other for lead villan. Everyone a Koontz masterpiece. Oh and another dog, but this one is a "fraidy cat" dog. And you will love him. And everything is tongue in cheek. Koontz's wit and outrageous black humor just keep on rollin page after page. I picked this one up and could not put it down. Don't forget to mention: the visit to Grandma's (well, she should be Grandma). THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ANY KOONTZ FAN and a terrific starter for anyone who has never read DEAN. Dean, WE LOVE YOU !!!
Rating: Summary: Not bad, but not one of his best Review: Anyone just getting started with reading Mr. Koontz's books may not want to start with this one. Maybe it's just me, but this one didn't seem to be as interesting as most of his others.
Rating: Summary: Great book - great characters and GREAT DOG! Review: This is my second favorite of all of Dean Koontz' books. My very favorite was Watchers. I love the way he uses dogs in his books. I wish he would do more of that. This book was very suspenseful. I couldn't wait to find out what happened to poor Spencer when he was 14 years old. I loved it when he came into contact with his CRAZY father and took matters into his own hands. Justice, finally! I would love to see sequels to this book and Watchers. Please, Mr. Koontz! I need to know what happened to Einstein's puppies!
Rating: Summary: The best part of the book is... Review: Eve Jammer's acts of inexhaustible autoeroticism. I bet the author had a good time imagining and writing this! Quite seriously, the author was pretty good in his writing. Problem is, he gets too much with descriptions and metaphors. And regarding Spencer Grant's vague reminiscences of his half-forgotten traumatic past, Dean Koontz is no Dostoevsky. He should have trimmed down on those annoying and recurring inner thoughts and memories of Grant, i.e., those interminable texts in italics.
Rating: Summary: Great dog alert, plus terrific book. Review: More dogs, Dean! I wish I knew you, you would have to be my kind of guy. I have both a Rocky and a Moose, so seem to be following you. I must say that Einstein and Orson are my favorites of your canine heros (but their names aren't). Please don't listen to an earlier reviewer and put cats in your stories. But I'm betting you aren't a cat kind of a guy. This was a wonderful book. Helicopters flew over my house shortly after I listened to that part, and I felt chilled. This story stays with you. PLEASE PLEASE put Watchers on tape (unabridged of course)
Rating: Summary: I wish it was better Review: I'm regreted of buying this book. I still gave it 2 stars because of the begining, which was interesting and thrilling. Only if you are a big fan of Koontz you should buy it. Otherwise, if you 're only curious, just get it borrowed.
Rating: Summary: The best of Koontz Review: A great story with a great plot, this book is one of the best I have read. The villains were absolutely great. There is nothing better than a bad guy with truly twisted motives, and there were 2 in this book. The characters were developed so well, one could easily picture them as real people. It had great scenes and would make a great movie too (as long as it was done right) If you didn't like this book, it's probably because you have the reading level of a second grader and lost interest because of the lack of pictures. Go out and buy this book.
Rating: Summary: Another Koontz Conspiracy Fest Review: Once again, the big bad government is chasing an Everyman with a gun fetish across the U.S. Obviously, Dean was a big fan of Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST, since he's been mining the plot of that movie for the past decade. But come on Dean! Hitchcock also did PSYCHO and THE BIRDS. A little variety couldn't hurt you either.
Rating: Summary: Can't Put it Down and Can't wait to read each chapter Review: Fell in love with Spencer as the man of mystery with a dedication for bringing good and decency to a world that keeps kicking his butt. Roy Miro needs to be brought down and this story keeps the reader on the brink of discovery. Chapter after Chapter unfolds into one of the best thrillers with just enough WEIRD to keep the reader committed to read on, to the unveiling of the "DARK RIVERS of the HEART". Will stay with this author if the next plot is close to this one.
