Rating: Summary: Lord Violates EVERY standard of the vampire genre Review: This has got to be the single worst book in the vampire genre that I have ever read.First of all, the Author is verbose. His clinical descriptions of Jack's "seduction" and killing of his victims slows the pace of the book to a crawl. He is extremely repetitive, I felt like I was reading the same page at several different points in the book. Also, Lord focuses not on the seduction of the victims, but rather the killing of them, as if I were reading a catalog of a serial killer. The book is about as erotic as Jeffrey Dahmer's Rap Sheet. The Character of Jack has got to be the most one-dimensional character that I have ever seen. He is also the first "progagonist" that I hoped would die a horrible death. At least Jack's mother, Noel, has some explanation and motivation behind her behavior. Jack, simply is a bloodsucking, remorseless, immoral vampire. There is absolutely no depth to his character at all. One of the basic paradoxes of the vampire genre (when told from the point of view of the vampire) is that despite the fact that vampires are supposed to be soulless, they struggle with things like remorse, love, etc. Things that only a person with a soul would deal with. This book has none of that. Instead, the book feels like it was written by a fundamentalist christian, dealing with his own internalized homophobia. It feels as though vampirism is used as a metaphor for homosexuality. As though neither of them are redeeming in any way. My reccomendation? read "Desmond" instead. That is one of the best in the genre that I have read, standing near the quality of Anne Rice.
Rating: Summary: A character no one cares about.... Review: This is one vampire who really doesn't care about any of his victims. And there are plenty of them, over and over again someone is introduced, killed and forgotten. The main character, Jack, seems like he doesn't really care about anything but himself. The ending is like a relief just to know he's supposedly gone. I wouldn't recommend it unfortunately.
Rating: Summary: A very suspenfull gay thriller Review: This is the first book that I have read by David Thomas Lord, but I will definitely check out his other books as well. I am a history buff, and I enjoyed how the book took the main characters through several centuries of European history to modern day America. I thought the book was fairly well written and an easy read. One criticism I do have about the book is that he went into great detail what he wore every day. Maybe it is just me but I did not care what he wore. The book is very suspensefull, and has a few unexpected plot turns and twists that will keep you interested in finding out what happens next.
Rating: Summary: It's got it all. Review: This is the first type of book I read that is about a gay character and it was great. I mean it had it all gay, love, sex, deceive, etc. I just love going into the mind of the vampire who roams for a very long time. Pick up a copy. It truly is an erotic journey.
Rating: Summary: Good beginning. Good ending. But, not much in between. Review: This story was a little repetitive. I suppose a vampire doesn't have much to do except chow down on peoples' necks. Not too many different ways this process can be told? This book sure illustrated that! With each venture of Jacks need to feed on some poor boys neck, I felt I turned back a few pages and re-read the same blood sucking attack. I guess I was hoping for a romantic romp between the two magnificent creatures on the cover. I was fooled! The author seemed to repeat the scenes over and over and over again, with only name changes of his victims. Jack's evening ritual to ready himself for his exit into the night was even duplicated in each chapter. This book could have been shortened to one hundred pages and still told a complete story. Sorry Jean Luc, but your life as a vampire was putting me to rest without your teeth poking away at my neck! Another thing that irritated me like a loose eyelash stabbing away at my eyeball was the use of the author's terminology on body parts. It was as if he was trying to tell us he was at one time in the medical field. This drove me crazy! The ending was a little predictable too. The hints that have been planted throughout the entire book nearly gives the ending away. Perhaps this was the author's intention. The only reason I continued flipping the pages of this book was to verify my thoughts on the finale to be correct, along with wishful thinking this tale would improve. I was delighted to discover a little bit of a twist at the end, but yep, just as I thought. I hope the sequel to this book is un-like the first. I am not up to reading this same book twice. Good luck on your next journey Mr. Vampire.
