Rating: Summary: Outstanding Read! Review: "Bound In Blood" is 'bound' to pierce the avid horror, suspense reader right where it counts, in the terror-plexus. "Bound In Blood" author David Thomas Lord masterfully introduces us to Jean-Luc Courbet de Charnac, no ordinary, run-of-the-mill vampire. Through Lord's erotic, poetic, yet fast-paced style, I was thrown into a world of suspense so breathtaking, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. My phone went unanswered as I read, meals were late, and attempted communication with me was normally met with, "Just let me finish this page, okay? Wait, just one more!" With powerful command of the written word, Lord gives nourishment to the mind's eye, moving it effortlessly from present day New York to the elegance of Paris in the 1800's then back again, all the while endearing us to his characters. We find Jean-Luc, our beloved vampire, both predator and prey. His feeding on New York's finest males, which is Jean-Luc's richest source for strength and vitality, is not the typical throat-ripping, moon howling affair. The seductive nature by which he reels in his prey leaves the reader either blushing or panting for more. Empathy abounds as each new threat to Jean-Luc unfolds. Not only must he hide from daylight, which, of course, has the ability to destroy him, but a greater, more powerful enemy stalks him-his mother. Noel Courbet, an undead herself (but only for a prescribed length of time as determined by her creator), is out to destroy her son so that she may gain possession of the one thing he owns that will guarantee her eternal life. Between the police and news reporters hot on Jean-Luc's trail, his mother discovering where he is, and a Jean-Luc twin who gives new meaning to the word overbite, one is left more often than not with their mouth hanging open and their pulse racing. Three distinct reactions came with my reading the last line of the book. There was the smile and sigh that all readers have when they've completed a story well told, regret that the story had to end, and finally, wishing the bookstores held more David Thomas Lord novels. Keep an eye on this guy. He's going to be big.
Rating: Summary: I want to be Jean-Luc Courbet's companion. Review: After reading this book I wanted so much to reach into the story and be with Jean-Luc. The ending is a shock and leaves you wanting more,I can hardly wait for another book by David Thomas Lord. I want the next book to get me hooked and drawn into the world of Jean-Luc as much as this one did. I have given this book to some of my best friends and they are enjoying it as much as I do.
Rating: Summary: Casts Its Spell! Review: As others note, the book does focus on the kill rather than the seduction -- which positions it as the male-oriented counterpoint to Rice's "Vampire Romances" perhaps -- but each kill is unique. Some are brutal, some tender. And, the most tender is very similar in its warthm and tone to Ripley's final, on-screen murder whose verbal rhythm the author even borrows. In fact, the more that I think about it, comparing the horror here to that of Ripley is apt. Jack is a monster, but easy to like. Yet when you step back from his spell, as you will toward the end of this book, you are horrified that you ever empathized. The horror is not that Jack is a sometimes brutal vampire, but that you are you. One-half star removed for indulged descriptions of clothes, which I didn't mind, and geographic minutiae of the Village, which I did -- at times, it read like MapQuest route. All in all, not high art, but absolutely riveting entertainment. (Take the following as evidence of the power this writer exerts. I consumed the novel whole, two, three days at most. A week later I picked it up to revisit those pages I had thought most charged, yet taken out of the flow found them near laughable. The week prior though, on that third day, they were anything but and I give it near 5 stars weeks later. That's testament to how compellingly this story is told.)
Rating: Summary: A Human Struggle...An Inhuman Man Review: BOUND IN BLOOD is a metaphorical glimpse into the struggles of a man cursed by a secret and driven by an uncontrollable need for pleasure, love and revenge. Jean-Luc "Jack" Courbet is a cultured, charismatic and intellectual being who must conceal his true identity in order to protect both himself and his secret life. After arriving from France, hoping to escape a haunting past, Jack blends auspiciously into the unwary and hedonistic world of the Greenwich Village nightlife. And, like so many of his victims, Jack becomes the hunted being stalked by a merciless predator from the past that will stop at nothing to destroy him. BOUND IN BLOOD brings an alternate lifestyle into the mainstream horror genre and illustrates that love, lust, need and fear are emotions that do not discriminate...even against the undead. David Thomas Lord writes with the proactive intensity needed for such a heady plot. He teases the reader's imagination without going overboard.
Rating: Summary: SHARP & BITING Review: David Thomas Lord does a sensational job on his debut novel. Sexy and violent, it's the best vampire book I've read in many, many years. The central character, the vampire Jack, is a cold-hearted monster, a handsome sex-machine and also glib and witty. Unlike the current vogue of humanizing vampires, Lord unleashes a true monster on the mean streets of New York City, one without pity and remorse. It's great to see that somebody remembered what vampires were supposed to be about! While tearing down some of the overused elements of the traditional vampire legend, Lord creates lots of new lore and new ways of looking at vampires. Alternately sexy, funny and horrifying, you'll want to keep the lights on for this one. I've heard that it's the first in a series. Can't wait for his new one! If you like your horror hot and chilling, you'll want to read this one too.
Rating: Summary: Problems wtih Genius Review: I found this book rather interesting, and the only reason I didn't vomit all over the cover is the fact of the vampires. I believe Lord could have just put a smidge of remorse in the monster Jean-Luc. If he had, I believe this book would have been absolutely riveting. The eroticism of the book was completely eroded by Jean-Luc's viciousness, by killing all his lovers. This book, all in all, was a pathetic attempt at homoeroticism, but a superb attempt at a vampire novel.
Rating: Summary: Interesting twist on a very old tale Review: I liked the book, and couldn't help but give it a 5. But when it comes to vampire stories, I'm fairly easy to please. Films, books, comics, stories . . . I find them all thrilling and exciting. That despite my intense disgust for other forms of bloody movies and books. So, please take this review with a grain (or pound) of salt. <grin> Jack is the "hero" of the story, a vampire living in New York who must do his evil deed every couple of days. As other commentators have stated, he has little if any problem with his continuous killing, as a decent vampire should. His prey tend to be strong, young, gay men who are immediately attracted to this mysterious, strong, blonde, blue-eyed Adonis. Often the death scenes (of which there are many) become an erotic journey whereby Jack is fulfilled in two respects before his prey often happily sink into oblivion. So if you're looking for a gay erotic horror story, this might be right for you. I will be honest and say that I was actually a little unsure of any real plot when I finished the book. Yes, it does lay the groundwork for a sequel, but of what? We got a brief glimpse into the life and past of Jack, which was interesting for the most part. But I saw little leading up to the end and the potential transfer of center stage to another "hero" in a sequel. It would have been much better if there were stronger ties between Jack and the few remaining characters alive at the end of the book. A wild read, which I enjoyed immensely. To everyone else - take your chances!
Rating: Summary: WHERE IS THE SEQUEL Review: I loved this book.. I don't have anything bad to say about it.. The end did make me stress a bit.. but It will all be okay if there is a Sequel.. and I've HEARD it's out of print already.. but it was only just released.. which irritates me.. I encourage anyone to read this book who's in for a good 'gay' vampire story... it hot, and a great read that keeps you interested.. He's a different 'more hip' version of Lestat.. I WANT THE SEQUEL.. I hate that I can't know what happens next..
Rating: Summary: BOUND IN BLOOD: THE EROTIC JOURNEY OF A VAMPIRE Review: I LOVER IT I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE AUTHOR PUTS OUT THE SEQUEL IF YOU WANT TO READ A FRESH NOVEL THAT USES THE SEXUAL ALLURE OF THE VAMPIRES READ THIS AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THE TRADITIONAL SEXUAL APPEAL OF THE CLASSIC HANDSOME VAMPIRE WHO DRIPS PURE SEX APPEAL
Rating: Summary: Great til the end... Review: I picked up this book in anticipation of a long plane trip. I was completely enthralled in the book, loved the characters, the plot, everything. Until I read the last two chapters. I had been rooting for "Jack" (the vampiristic protagonist) and Claude (the one who seemed like a perfect lifetime partner for Jack) throughout the whole book. Unfortunately, Jack's untimely demise hit me about like the book hit the far wall of the room only seconds later. I would still buy and read the next book, if indeed this turns out to be series, if nothing else, only to see what happens next. Bound in Blood is a wonderfully written book. Even the ending is well-written. It just didn't follow the story-line that I wanted it to follow. This is not the Author's fault by any means, but I feel that the ending may hinder one's enjoyment of the completion of the story. Just be forewarned...
