Rating: Summary: Can't get any better! Review: Haunted Heartland is *the* book to have if you want true ghost stories, not boring investigative accounts of them. Michael and Beth do a lot of research to find out the most personal details of each home, building or piece of land they write up on in this book. They vividly describe each story to put the most succesful image in your head. This is my most favorite book of any books I have ever had. I finally got a hold of the Hardcover Edition (which I've been looking for forever) and I will never let go of it. I'm sure that you won't want to either. These ghost stories are the best you can find anywhere. They're not boring and not too exciting, but perfectly blended with each other to make up the best haunted book there is out there. You might even want to go investigate these places yourself after you get done reading some of the stories!

Rating: Summary: Fun-can't ask for anything more Review: Haunted Heartland is a great collection of ghost stories and peculiar happenings from the midwest. The Oliver Larch story disturbed me for years after reading the book and Cry Woman Bridge, the Emma Schmidt story and the haunted frat house wer also stand outs. Try reading Haunted Heartland at night in an empty dark house and you'll be amazed at how spooky it really is.
Rating: Summary: Run-of-the-mill, supernatural yarn. Review: Having read (and loved) Scott and Norman's "Historic Haunted America", I was, needless to say, really let down by "Haunted Heartland". The anecdotes were much shorter (some not even making it past one page) and rather abrupt. The "stories", at best, are mildy scary, and at worst, horribly tedious. The section devoted to ghost ships of the Great Lakes was particularly trying. Most of these anecdotes were spent relating cliched ghost activities (i.e. lights turning off and on, heavy breathing, footsteps etc), instead of focusing on the story of the inhabitants or the ghosts itself. "Historic" spent a greater amount of time fleshing out the "hows" and "whys" of the ghost stories (who the ghost is believed to be, why they are believed to be haunting the place), whereas "Heartland" spends time focusing on the "wheres" and "whats" without delving into the background and experiences of the people involved, alive or dead. I bought this book hoping for a few good ghost stories with emotion and character; instead, I got what was essentially a bunch of campfire stories haphazardly thrown together into a 200+ page book. Save your money for (the superior) "Historic Haunted America".
Rating: Summary: A good book for a stormy night Review: I enjoyed this book mainly because it gives you the mystery of ghosts and hauntings. Some of them were intersting, others were boring but mostly they were entertaining. Some of them even creeped me out a bit.
Rating: Summary: a great book! Review: I first read excerpts from this book in the Milwaukee Journal back in the mid-80's and was fascinated. A long-time favorite of mine. I agree that the Summerwind story is one of the very best, although I found the scariest one to be the haunting in the Cleveland basement. If you're interested in ghosts and the paranormal, you'll definitely enjoy this book--it's a classic in the field.
Rating: Summary: It gave me chills! Review: I love how this book is divided by States! Some of the stories in my state were really close to home. It made me want to go check it out for myself! I read the entire book and it was fantastic! I'm looking forward to another book by the same authors, because they're true story accounts are so chilling!
Rating: Summary: Great book of real ghost stories!! Review: I remember in high school checking this book out over and over and over and over again! There are just too many stories to cover in just two weeks, but that's a good thing! It prompted me to want to visit some of the sites listed in the book to see if the stories were really true or not (but, I never went). It's an absolutely fabulous book! If I had to, I'd buy it for $...! The stories are in depth, but not too descriptive, giving a lot of background on the ghosts' lives before they were dead, giving reason to the hauntings. If you live in the Midwest and you like reading *real* ghost stories, you'll never throw this book out! You will want to drive to the nearest site that you can as soon as you get done reading the story! I definately recommend it!!
Rating: Summary: this book is awesome because it has the story of st mary's Review: i think this was a good book and thought that the st mary's story was good and liked it alot
Rating: Summary: Spine Tingling Review: I was severly chilled to the bone when I read the story "The Horrors of Heffron Hall". The way the story was put, I felt like I was right there, so what else could I do but be frightened out of my wits! I really recommend this story to readers who like a good scare, and I also remcommend this book for all horror fans like me.
