Summary: hot & nasty, cool & hip
Review: Forget the paramedics. With this latest blood-tinged invitation to Harry Shannon's nightmares, chances of recovery are slim anyway. In this second of the 'Night' trilogy, Shannon navigates a blood-soaked bobsled ride to hell. This time, the setting is Salt Lick, Nevada, a western town where it's werewolves instead of buffalo that roam. If you prefer your
adrenaline spiked, the prose hot and the wit as sharp and dry as the Nevada landscape, don't miss Harry's latest tour de horror.

Summary: Fun, Thrills and a whole lotta scares
Review: Harry Shannon knows how to have fun. With his sophomore effort, Night of the Werewolf (following the highly original and very scary Night of the Beast), Shannon proves that he is one of the most innovative new voices in horror fiction. Night of the Werewolf is a fun ride that delivers everything a good pulp horror novel should, and more!

Case and Kate meet under strange circumstances. Both of them are looking for missing people and their paths cross in Vegas. When they decide to investigate together, their invstigation brings them to the smalle desert town of Salt Lick, where they will uncover one dark secret that will bring death their way.

Salt Lick is your typical small-horror-story-town, where everyone seems strange, where everyone seems to be hiding secrets. And what a secret it is. Case and Kate soon find themselves trapped in this town that just happens to be infested with a tribe of werewolves. Bringing you back to the very best of the old horror pulp novels, Shannon takes you on a ride that is all ups and no downs. The frantic pacing never stops, and the characters are always intriguing. The dialog is witty and often ironically funny, while the situations, if often over the top, leave you craving for more action. Shannon's werewolves are usually remorseless and vicious, always hungry and ready to kill.

There is never a dull moment in this novel. Shannon goes all out to make sure he delivers the goods. Although the first half of the book reads more like a mystery novel than an actual horror tale, the second half is everything a horror novel should be and more. The finale is so tense and action-packed, you won't be able to put this one down.

I had a great time reading Night of the Werewolf, and I'll bet an arm and a leg that you will too. Shannon weaves his tale with the skill that only masters of the genre are able to generate. He isn't trying to reinvent the werewolf genre. What he wants is to give his readers a great time. By the time you've turn the last page, you'll realize how greatly entertaining Night of the Werewolf truly is. Read this one and be ready for the thrill ride of the year.

Summary: I'm Just Wild About Harry and WEREWOLF!
Review: I love great characters and dialogue and here they are. No doubt, Mr. Shannon has lived! He can tell a great story in the lean way masters like Greg Mcdonald or James M. Cain might. NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF excels in the three "P's": Great plot, prose, and protagonists. I can't wait for his new crime novel, MEMORIAL DAY, to come out in 2004. --Andrew McAleer, author of DOUBLE ENDORSEMENT

Summary: Hairy Scary
Review: I was sceptical about how well Mr. Shannon might carry out his mission to revive the classic pulp horror tradition with Night of the Beast. In that respect, I was put in my place because NOTB was a great book, flawed most certainly in places, but this was one of those rare cases where the flaws only added to the charm of the novel.

Now with Night of the Werewolf, it seems Shannon has taken the meager criticism levied on the first book in his "Night" trilogy and used it to his advantage. NOTW is a far better book, the result of a much more confident author at work. The story is fast-paced, relentless and unflinching. If you like gore, action and your meat raw and bloody, then you'll enjoy the hell out of this. Great characters, great imagery and an unashamed use of a well-worn genre staple combine to make this a thrill-ride all the way. If you think you've read everything about werewolves, Night of the Werewolf will be a pleasant surprise.

Expect a movie because this reminded me of those great siege classics "Assault on Precinct 13", "Night of the Living Dead" or "I Am Legend"...Buy it!

Summary: Werewolves That Actually Frighten
Review: If you like werewolf tales you'll be in Nirvana here. Shannon has a way of squeezing real scares out of this old horror standby. His werewolves actually have some horrific weight to them. The story is fast-paced and fun, with mystery and humor in addition to the fear factor. So for exciting pulpy frights, look no further.

Summary: Name-dropping fun!
Review: If you love horror, you will recognize just about every name in this suspenseful thrill-ride novel! Harry Shannon loves a good monster, and he puts his love to good use here, making a heady stew of werewolves, hired killers, a burned out ex-cop, a Hollywood studio employee, and others whose lives all come crashing to a halt in a town appropriately named Salt Lick. A not to be missed tour de force somewhat reminiscent of George Romero's zombie movies blended with 50s/60s monster flicks, due to the climactic battle at the end! A nicely done supernatural thriller!

Summary: A Real Treat For Horror Lovers!
Review: Night of the Werewolf is Harry Shannon's howlingly good follow-up to his outstanding Night of the Beast. I truly enjoyed the previous novel, but this werewolf book is more satisfying and entertaining. Shannon gives us a pair of hapless protagonists who find themselves up against not only werewolves, but hit men and murderous bikers as well.

Night of the Werewolf is everything a good horror story should be. It's fast and bloody and full of gruesome fun. The prose is lovely as well. Harry's writing jumps through no literary hoops, nor is it pretentious or flowery. It's spare, clean and matter of fact, the way a good storyteller ought to tell a tale.

I heartily recommend Night of the Werewolf to anyone searching for a ripping good old fashioned horror yarn.

Summary: A light take on a dark genre
Review: Shannon's "Bad Seed" was excellent, his "Night of the Beast" raised the bar for his storytelling skills, and now "Night of the Werewolf" has surpassed the two earlier works. If you like detective fiction and horror stories, this will certainly satisfy your appetite. Don't let the listless title fool you--the story starts at 90 mph and takes off from there. Shannon's style is fast, articulate, artfully no-nonsense. You know he really likes his characters, but you never feel that they're safe (he makes sure of that in the second chapter). There's murder, mayhem, and gore, and part of the appeal of the book is that Shannon seems to take great delight in ratcheting up the stakes for his protagonists, all the while surrounding them with growing menace in the midst of a clan of werewolves who live--where else?--Nevada. There's the distraction of a motorcycle gang that is a little disconnected, but overall Night of the Werewolf is what we used to call a page-turner. And the quality of the writing makes you want to take it slower than your terrified instincts tell you to take it. Settle in late at night and start reading. You will not be disappointed. We'll be looking forward to more Joe Case stories from Shannon in the future.

Summary: Name-dropping fun!
Review: Should you choose to read Harry Shannon's "Night of the Werewolf," you better allot yourself enough time to read it all in one sitting. The action is non-stop, the characters engaging and the pages contain just enough mystery to make you want to turn to the next one ... and the next one ... and the next one.

For myself, I found the senseless violence of the opening chapter to be the most disturbing part of the book and I cheered when the hero, a cop, took revenge in a way that would make Dirty Harry smile in satisfaction. If you're a parent, this opening chapter will slap you in the face. Then Shannon will pick you up and drag you along for a thrill ride as the hero and heroine follow separate quests until they unite in the Nevada desert to face vicious bikers and a shift of power in the werewolf pack that calls the Nevada mountains home.

Shannon's werewolves are basically the old-fashioned variety. No angst over their condition here, they are what they are and love it. Not to say they are without emotion, as we learn when the old leader is forced out of the pack by a brash, rebellious youngster. But make no mistake, the werewolves are villains in this story, though they're by no means the only bad guys and gals. With interesting flashbacks, Shannon gives us a look at the history of his pack and how they came to live in relative isolation in Nevada.

Shannon's writing is compelling, the emotions of his characters very real and his sense of pace impeccable. "Night of the Werewolf" will devour a few hours of your time, but it's a feast you'll be glad you attended.
