Summary: It'll hook ya.
Review: I am not a horror reader, but have been trying different genres to see what's out there. Writing styles, turns of expression, etc. This sounded like a good story, graveyards and all, so I gave it a shot, assuming I'd put it down halfway through, like I do so many books. No way.

This book messed with my head. Movies never scare me. I hate to watch horror. But when you read it... it's in your head then, your mind bending and twisting. I actually had nightmares, which I guess means that the author has done his job.

This author is very good and I want to read more of his work. My daughter wanted something to read, so I handed her this book. She hasn't been the same since... (Not really, but it did shake her a bit.)

Summary: Interesting, but not much of a finish.
Review: I liked 90% of the story--kept my interest, but the ending feels like he just decided "time to quit typing!"

Summary: An Unexpected Delight
Review: I really didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. Clark has taken a cliche situation and turned it into something unexpected. Instead of merely seeing some sort of being that demands sacrifice (even mundane items such as beer or rubber balls), we see the inner conflict John Newton goes through as he decides what to do next. Once again Clark has drawn out realistic characters--so much so that the story wound up shocking me.
I highly recommend this for serious fans of horror fiction who are tired of cheap thrills and want something that will stay with them for days afterward.

Review: IF YOU LIKE UNPREDICTABLE THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. YOU THINK YOU'LL FIGURE IT OUT BUT YOU WON'T

Summary: A good scary story with no pretensions ...
Review: If you're getting sick of the latest bloated and self-important novels of the likes of King and Koontz this book is the perfect antidote. No it hasn't the most original plot of all time - in fact it is one of the good old staples of horror fiction - family moves to idyllic rural location finds villagers engaged in ancient pagan rituals - but none the worst for that. Any seasoned horror fan will know exactly where this journey is taking them - and Simon Clark doesn't disappoint. Sure there are plot holes - the fate of Paul's girlfriend being an obvious one - and the book feels as if it was dashed off in a hurry to meet a deadline- but IMO the exciting pace and the subdued horror of the ending more than make up for it. This guy can really write and I don't understand why he isn't a major bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic ...

Summary: Horror of the terrifying kind
Review: It has taken John Newton a long time to make it as a true crime writer but he finally done it when his last book attained the hardcover bestseller lists. Now, he and his family have moved to the bucolic village of Skelbrooke in the heart of England. John, his wife Val, their teenage son Paul, and their preadolescent daughter Elizabeth have found their dream home and have become a part of the village.

Paradise ends when the first letter arrives demanding that John deliver a candy bar to a particular grave in the nearby cemetery commonly called the Necropolis. John ignores the letter and his daughter is seriously injured. When the second letter arrives, John follows the instructions of the note and realizes other people have received the same memo as well. When the entity that is sending the letters makes his final horrific request, John decides to take his family and flee town if they can.

This is definitely a very scary horror novel that preys on our most primal emotions and fears. While the reader never actually gets to see the entity inspiring terror in Skelbrooke, the author cleverly entices the audience into imagining what it is and what it looks like. That is more terrifying than any description could be. Simon Clark understands the horror genre by terrifying his fans to the point that the electric companies will treat him as a VIP because of all the profits made from adults sleeping with the lights on.

Summary: Wasn't Impressed!
Review: Judging by all the reviews, I decided to read this book. I am a big fan of Graham Masterton and James Herbert (our other token British horror novelists) so I expected to be wowed by Simon Clark's talent. All in all the book was just mediocre. And most reviews pointed towards this novel being his best. I was rather disappointed. The book just didn't have any guts really! I found myself hurrying through this book to pick up something better. Now if you would like great British horror try Prey by Graham Masteron (awesome!) or anything by James Herbert.

Summary: Nothing memorable + not entertaining
Review: Ordered this based on glowing reviews, and was disappointed. The ending was too depressing, and the story overall really didn't have much in the way of a scare factor. I guess if one is looking for a "downer" read, this would be a good book for that. Ended up selling it to local bookstore for far less than paid for it.

Summary: Darkness Demands, Clark Delivers
Review: Simon Clark delights in scaring the daylights out of his readers, and he does it with a self-styled exuberance that is rare and wonderful. In DARKNESS DEMANDS, he takes you deep into an ancient graveyard, Necropolis, and then dares you to find your way out--but you probably won't want to leave until the final (grave)stone is turned. After reading this book, you might have a few demands of your own--namely, more chilling tales from this talented writer. Now this is gob-smacking stuff.
