Rating: Summary: Nice try but..Not So Great Review: Not the greatest Saul book.I think the storyline was a good idea but the plotting was terrible. I was disappointed because in the past, John Saul has been a fabulous writer. I don't know what happened w/this book. The beginning was much more interesting than the middle of the book. The dreams of the characters were confusing because I wasn't sure if it was actually occurring.... A few paragraphs later, the reader realizes that it was just a dream. I also think the writer rushed through some scenes in order to get to the next "scary" scene. It really wasn't as eerie as Saul's novels usually are. If this was your first John Saul read, please DO NOT give up...his other books are much much better.
Rating: Summary: And you think you're having a bad day? Review: Just when you thought your cheek-pinching troll of an aunt was a family humiliation, you've got nothin' on the Conways. Dad Ted is a drunk with a satanic hangover, Mom Janet is a frustrated artist who gives too many "one more chances" and twins Jared and Kim have your common teenage problems -- peer pressure,parents..and a long lineage of voodoo practicing, child murdering, animal slaughtering psychos. RIGHT HAND is an oogie-filled, dysfunctional family thriller. It's my first Saul, and I really inhaled the book overnight. There are some pretty cheezy scenes a' la Amityville Horror/Freddy Krueger, but if you like a good creepy read, this is a great one. I could have sworn I heard somebody whispering my name as I was finishing it up.Good stuff!
Rating: Summary: A blood, guts and gore BORE! Review: I'm pretty sure that I know what the left hand was doing when this was written... it was busy writing "The Unloved."ONCE AGAIN... a dysfunctional family consisting of submissive mother, father with a mysterious past, and a few ordinary children find themselves to suddenly inherit some old run-down small and predominantly Catholic town family mansion with... (you guessed it) a rather bizarre past. I need not repeat my summary, since Saul has succeeded in doing so from one book to the next. His creation, "The Unloved" must have been the original and "Right Hand" nothing but a cheap imitation. The characters and the story seemed to parallel each other. My guess is that Saul had a quick vacation in Lousiana, picked up on a few nuances of the Catholic faith, spotted a deserted mansion in the town he visited and created a story from the experience. Whereas "The Unloved" created mystery and suspense in a supposedly "haunted" environment, using seemingly surreal happenings that in the end had logical and provable explanations, "Right Hand" was a mish-mash of other-worldly black magic that had no real-life and logical explanation. I was completely disappointed. As a personal preference, I find that mysterious allegations supported with logical explanations make for a more entertaining story. Additionally, if dear reader is bothered by the thought of a blood, guts and gore satanic cult story, I would recommend that this not be a book to read. There is plenty of that sort of graphic imagery and I'm sure that it might be unsettling to some, but not in an entertaining sense. I give the big thumbs down on this one, dear reader. Your money and time may well be spent on some other creation. Life's too short to endure this sort of "entertainment."
Rating: Summary: Not up to the usual Saul's standard Review: I bought this book just after its release, never mind that the rating was quite bad. After reading the book, I really regret buying it. The characters are too shallow and the plot is quite a mess. I still do not understand why the evil force only look for the males in the family. The dreams were confusing and led readers away from the plot. Hope the next John Saul's book is better. Those who are considering the purchase of this book, please do re-consider.
Rating: Summary: The Right Hand of Evil Review: Excellent reading....I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read Nightshade. Keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: The Right Hand of Evil Review: This book was BORING! I love John Saul books - what happened here? Was this cranked out for the sake of cranking out another bestseller? I almost did not want to buy Nightshade. But I took the plunge and loved Nightshade - readers save your money - buy Nightshare instead.
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: Good book! It would make an excellent movie!
Rating: Summary: Love It! Review: John Saul is the master at weeving an evil tail. He truley makes you belive that the devil can get ahold of anyone for the right price.
Rating: Summary: Kept Me UP! Review: It has been a very long time since I didn't want to turn out the lights or didn't know how the book was going to end. Though I have to admit 3 pages before the end I realized ......... (don't want to give it away)! At any rate I had no trouble sleeping after I finished it. Good book, a bit religous, but still good.
Rating: Summary: Scariest Saul I've read Review: This is my sixth Saul book I've read and it might be my favorite so far. "Hand" grabs you in the opening with a very scary scene. This sets the stage for what awaits the Conway family. Some very scary visuals. I'm not sure if any of Saul's work has been turned into movies but this would make a good one. Quick read, worth checking out.
