Rating: Summary: The Long Walk: The GREATEST story ever!!! Review: I recently read "The Long Walk". I think it was the best book I have ever read. My favorite character had to be Hank Olson. I needed to read the ending over and over again to believe it! After some thought I came to the conclusion that the dark figure at the end was death overcoming Garraty. You MUST read this book! Stephen King makes it seem like you are walking right with them!! EXCELLENT!!!
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book of All Time Review: My God! What can compare with this book? All four stories are psychological masterpeices, examining madness of all kinds. I truly believe "The Long Walk" is a literary work of art. It delves into the human mind, examining how the mind encompasses death and what life really means. "Rage" shows the inherent flaws in a "sane" society and completely turns the table on it's readers. "Roadwork" is chilling in it's own way, and the setting and characters make it come alive. Finally, "The Running Man" recreates some aspects of "The Long Walk", depicting a man literally running for his life. The climactic ending WON'T be forgotten. And for all those who say "The Long Walk" ended poorly, see if you can find and ending to an epic story like this one that fits the topic, death, so well. The final mystery is not to be revealed.
Rating: Summary: Review of "Rage" Review: [This review was also posted under the Amazon.com listing of the original 1977 paperback edition of Rage]The most interesting thing about "Rage" is its history: Stephen King began writing this novel his senior year in high school, finished it in 1971, and published it as an original paperback in 1977 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Years later, after it became public knowledge that Stephen King and Richard Bachman were one and the same, it was republished in hardcover as part of an omnibus titled THE BACHMAN BOOKS, which contained the first four novels published under the Bachman penname (there were six in all). In the years since, all the Bachman novels have been reprinted as separate paperbacks--all except Rage. In response to the recent school shooting tragedy at Columbine High School (and the anti-media backlash it caused), King decided to pull Rage out of print, forever. He is afraid its depiction of school violence will further 'glorify' such acts of aggression. The story itself has some obvious flaws: the plot is cliched (although, to be fair, school violence was not as common in 1977); the students in the story do not act realistically (at least, they didn't act like real students in similar situations have acted); and at times the dialogue seems wooden (not like King's modern writing at all). Still, King was good enough even back then that you could see some real talent under the surface of the teen angst. He is a master at turning a situation on its head. By the end of the 130-page book, I found myself rooting for Charlie, the troubled teen who kills his teacher and holds his classmates hostage. And I was solidly aligned against the forces of good--the cops, the psychiatrists, & the parents. On the whole, the book certainly held my interest, and it was sort of fun looking back and seeing how Stephen King, the most successful commercial writer of all time, got started.
Rating: Summary: it was good for what i have read so far Review: i have liked it so far but i have only read one story so you ahould all read them all and tell ME what YOU think
Rating: Summary: Rage is killer, but others start out slow Review: great book by steven king- rage is possible the best book i have ever read. This book is worth getting just for rage, however the long walk and others start out slow, but eventually pick up, great over all book, you will not be dissapointed!
Rating: Summary: Short Stories: What King Does Best Review: Rage was a great story but you wouldn't want to see it on the reading list in your high school. The Long Walk made you feel that you were there with the walkers, but the ending was a bit of a let down. Of course I didn't like the ending of Tolkein's Lord of the Ring either because I did not WANT the story to end. Road Work is an interesting tale. If you want to read some decent Stephen King read a collection of his short stories like The Bachman Books, Four Past Midnight, or Different Seasons. His recent novels sort of suck. They are long and take forever to get to the point.
Rating: Summary: Ending of "The Long Walk" Review: I really enjoyed this early novel by Stephen King, but I cannot fully enjoy it until I understand the ending. What happened to Garrary? Did he die? Was he dreaming the whole walk? Why did it go black? Who put their hand on his shoulder? Why did he feel like running? Could someone please explain it to me and email me a response.
Rating: Summary: it is a very good collection of stephen king Review: i enjoyed all of these stories EXCEPT the long walk. i dont understand why other reviewers found the long walk to be so entertaining. it is very boring and repetitive( he keeps on walking person gets killed) .on the other hand it DID make you feel as if i was walking with them (i wanted the story to end!). rage was fun if not a bit corny and roadwork is a great story. the running man as quite good as well.
Rating: Summary: great and exciting, couldn`t put it down Review: I just finished The Long Walk and enjoyed it tremendously, however I didn`t like the ending!I felt cheated and tired after (walking) so long to get to the end! I want to know why he chose to end it the way he did, until I find out I doubt I`ll be running back to the bookstore for more!!
Rating: Summary: Not as good as King's novels Review: I enjoyed all of the stories execpt for Rage. He had a good story, but failed to tell it well. However the other stories are interesting, especially The Long Walk. If you like King, stick to his novels, they are developed much better.
