Rating: Summary: I'm 22, and it scares me like I'm still 12. Review: Here's the deal: I read a spooky book when I was twelve. I couldn't remember the title or the author; all I knew is that the memory of long, dark hallways, doors locked from the inside and four lonely girls trapped in an institution haunted my nightmares for ten years. My concrete memories consisted of the thread of a plot: Four young girls, gifted with ESP, are brought to a private school so the headmasters can channel dead artists through their minds and sell the art as originals. About a month ago, I mentioned the elusive book to a friend, who immediately named the title and the author, admitting his fear, as well. Pretending to buy for a younger sister who doesn't exist, I bought the book again -- with a new cover no longer featuring the young heroine with a candle -- and was overcome once more by Lois Duncan's ability to surround the simple narrative with swirling mists, dark corners and flickering candlelight. DOWN A DARK HALL introduced me to the glorious world of wondering what's behind the door, a passion that extended into Stephen King, Clive Barker and even dark comic books. But even the "adult" writers can't capture atmosphere the way Duncan can. Like King's Carrie, Duncan illustrates the pain and chaos of adolescent girlhood, and the impossibility of escaping a world that doesn't understand. The difference is that your little sister can read Duncan while she's still young enough to feel the character's confusion... and the impact is strong enough to last a decade.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I remember years ago when I first picked up this book I really didn't expect much from it. I must say I was blown away with because it had elements that I loved. Ever since I read this book, I've been a Lois Duncan fan. The book is about a a fourteen-year old girl named Kit going to a special boarding school named Blackwood while her mother and her new stepfather take a long Honeymoon. But Kit soon finds out some thing strange: they are only four girls in the boarding school. What follows is a supernatural mystery. Kit and her new friend Sandy soon find out the reasons why they were selected to attend Blackwood. Soon their lives are at stake and it's up to Kit to find a way out. Great read. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Gripping! Review: Have been a Lois Duncan fan all my life. This book in particular is one I've enjoyed since I was a teenager. Lois has a unique way of slowly pulling a reader into the world she has created. Like a fish after bait a reader will find themselves quickly hooked and unable to put the book down. After all these years, I still get chills reading this book (as I do most of her young adult suspense novels!). You won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Amazing Review: The story of "Down a Dark Hall" whirled around in my head a deep fog. I was completely entranced by the novel and for the hour or so that it took me to read it, all I knew was the highly creepy world of Blackwood boarding school. As usual it started off slow, like all Lois Duncans book seem to do (I have read about six or more), accelerating more and more until you couldn't tear yourself away the story if your life depended on it! This book had a creepy element to it's tale, and it sends a chill straight down your spine. It's style in writing was very similar to many other Lois Duncan books, and like everything else I've read by her- the plot and writing entranced me every time! (Exactly where does she get these wonderful ideas?) I definitely recommend this book, I just finished reading it fifteen minutes ago and wanted to read other readers' responses to the book immediately! Other great reads by Duncan I recommend are "Killing Mr. Griffin" (phenemonal), "The Third Eye" (highly captivating!) and anything else you can get your hands on by her! She is truly an amazing writer, very suspenseful! She's fantastic at the genre she seems to have focused on in her writing career- teen suspense novels. One might glance at a book cover and brush it off as a silly novel, but the cover of these paperbacks honestly don't her stories justice. The amazing words are what count. Well if this hasn't convinced you to read it, I'm not sure what will! So, c'mon...why aren't you at the bookstore, library, or adding this to your "shopping cart" by right now? :) Get to it!
Rating: Summary: Great Mystery Review: Dear Amazon.com Down a Dark Hall is a great mystery full of Suspense. Kit is a smart and curious character with a lot of pride. She will do anything to keep herself from becoming a Receiver. I loved the way Lois Duncan described Blackwood Academy, it really did seem to give off an evil feel. I loved this book from the time I read the back of the book to the last sentence of the story. It was great and I highly recommend it for teen girls. Rating: Summary: THis book is hard to put down! Review: Have you ever read a book and you were on the edge of your seat the whole time? Down a Dark Hall, by Lois Duncan is a suspenseful and engrossing book. A fourteen year old girl named Kit Gordy is sent away to an all girls' school called Blackwood. Madame Duret is the head of the school and the other teachers are her son Jules and Professor Farley. Kit and the other girls that applied had to take a "special test" that determined if they had "special powers" in order to be accepted. Kit has a bad feeling about the place from the minute she arrives. She then realizes there are only three other girls that will be attending the school Sandy, Ruth, and Linda. A few months after they arrive, famous dead people started taking over their bodies. The famous piano player Franz Schubert took over Kit, the poet Emily Bronte took over Linda, and the two other girls were taken over by more than one person. Do they escape the dangerous Blackwood school? I never wanted to put this book down. It had a plot that was twisted and the details through out the book were incredible. It is the kind of book that makes a person scared to walk through his own house after he reads it. Lois Duncan made it feel like I was actually there, in the story. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read suspenseful books.

Rating: Summary: DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT READ THIS BOOK Review: This book was ok. but i expected more from lois Duncan. I would read her other books, but not this one. the only reason i had to start and finish this book is because it was for school. We had to get into groups and read one of the lois duncan books. And i was stuck with this one. theres not enough exciting events and things happening in this book. Don't waste your time people. PLEASE DON'T. READ SOMETHING BETTER, like ( I know what you did last summer). You'll be more satisfied with that one.
Rating: Summary: Chilling Review: Lois Duncan does it again!! One of her best! This is a spine chilling story about a girl named Kit who gets sent to a boarding school by the name of Blackwood. The school seems to be filled with mystery's and suspicious teachers. There are only 4 girls attending this school at this time but very slowly one by one, strange things occur, like Kit not recieving any mail that shes suppose to get and the girls get wierder and wierder as the days pass. After a while Kit starts expieriencing wierd dreams and very chilling flashbacks of her father who passed. It is now up to Kit to find out the secret behind The Blackwood school for girls and uncover what these 4 girls are really here for.
Rating: Summary: Weird Review: A Review by Jacque Kit Gordy is a 15year old who is going to an all girl's boarding school in Blackwood. The first minute she gets there she gets this strange feeling. There were only three other girls in the whole school. Their names were Lynda, Sandy, and Ruth. They all had special talents, but only because of ghosts! The ghosts are the ones who have the talent and they're making the four girls do their unfinished business. Will the girls get out in time or will the ghosts take over their minds? One of the things I really liked was the suspense and mystery that was in this book. For instance, Kit saw someone in the mirror behind her and nobody else saw it. Or when Lynda started to paint significant pictures and she had never taken classes or anything. Another thing I liked was when all of the creepy stuff happened. Especially when I was home alone and jumping at little soundless things. Like this one thing in the book where suddenly a paper in the fireplace lifted out of it. It was pretty weird. I also liked it because whenever I predicted, I was almost always right. I recommend this book to readers that like to read suspense and mystery. Maybe also readers that like to predict, because sometimes you just have a need to predict.
