Rating: Summary: The Alienist Review: Needing a new book to read I was browsing in a B. Daltons book store and came across the Alienist. I thought hmmm who is Caleb Carr? I read the back and took a chance, and Im extremely glad I did. I couldnt put the book down. He made Old New York come to life. It was interesting to read about how things were back a century ago, and how insane people were looked at. Dont miss Angle of Darkness, where the characters are back in action.
Rating: Summary: Old New York Comes Alive! Review: The most interesting part of this book was the backdrop of old New York. I thought the combination of characters, plot, and setting made this an excellent read!
Rating: Summary: A Mystery Masterpiece Review: A horrendous murder in New York City in the 1900's. The murderer is killing boy prostitutes all around the city. He has a pattern of when he does it, who he murders, what he does, and why. More boys are getting killed and no one knows who's doing it. The book starts off in the 1930's, and then John Moore (main character) re-tells the story, of these unforgettable murders in New York. Usually when I read a book and it starts off like this, it is incredibly boring, and I get really confused. This time it caught my attention, and I was grabbed. From then on I found it hard to put the book down. I wanted to find out more about the murderer and the characters. Each character had a story behind them. Throughout the book the characters' personalities were revealed by either another story, about some type of connection with the murderer. It was also interesting to see characters who resembled an every day person (not a super hero). It was also very interesting how Caleb Carr incorporated psychology, and how he described what it was like in New York City in the 1900's. He has a profound use of the English language. He uses very powerful words and descriptions to portray how the character is feeling. He describes each crime scene with such great description that you sit there reading your book, and you cringe as you think of seeing something like that. You almost feel like you are in the book. When the characters are happy for something they have found out about the murder you get excited, and when it leads to a dead end you feel disappointed. I give this book 4 ½ stars because I loved it and found it to be very well written, and not boring, however I was a little disappointed with the ending. I felt that it did not live up to the rest of the book. It seemed to be quick and didn't have a twist. I thought the ending should have been a lot stronger, and more interesting. This book was recommended to me for being a great mystery novel, and it lived up to that. It is my most favorite mystery novel, and maybe even my most favorite book of all time.
Rating: Summary: The Alienist Review: Excellent! Engrossing, you won't be able to put it down
Rating: Summary: in the heart of nyc Review: Engrossing ,disturbing ,unforgettable - quite simply you will find this book impossible to put down.Rarely have I read a novel which so accuratly portrays an historical era. NYC in the nineteenth century seems to leap off the pages. Why only 4 stars? It is a little slow in parts and it easy to get bogged down in the complexity of the subject but don't be put off it's well worth the effort.
Rating: Summary: You can't judge 'The Alienist' by its cover. Review: The most intriguing part of The Alienist is it's catchy title, and its dark, mysterious cover. Despite the graphic details of the murders, and the mildly interesting historical content, the actual plot of the book never lives up the the sinister feel established by the title and cover photograph. Don't get me wrong, it's not really bad, after all I was interested enough to finish the thing, it just sort of fizzled out. I tired quickly of the authors' attempt to make me sympathize with the pitiful, abused, child killer. The the author must have watched too many episodes of the TV show "Profiler" when he devised his explanation of how the killer was apprehended. Left to the investigative techniques of Mr. Moore and Dr. Kreizler, the killer would have died of boredom long before he was ever caught!
Rating: Summary: The Alienist Review: This is one of my Top 10-All -Time Favorite Books! The rich, but rather graphic descriptions of 19th century New York City was facinating. It was also amazing how the new field of psychology was looked upon as a sort of "witchcraft". I'd love to see it as a movie, but I fear they would not do it justice. The darkness and wonderful characters may be best left to our imagination. The best thing about this book is that there is a prequel, The Angel of Darkness, another MUST READ!
Rating: Summary: Engrossing! Review: The characters seemed to come to life as I kept turning pages. Following the development of the story through the eyes of John Moore made it more approachable. Despite the murders description's crudeness, which proved to be a little disturbing at times, every chapter entices the reader into knowing what's happening next. I particularly liked the fact that the main characters weren't superheroes in any way. They were pictured as common people with the desire to acquire the knowledge that will lead them into catching the criminal. People with interesting abilities and flaws. The answers to the reader's many questions are revealed in the right way: not too slow nor too fast, everything unveils at just the right time. I also enjoyed the author's narrative style. He was careful not to get lost in endless descriptions, instead he gives enough information to provide each scenario with the right atmosphere. All in all, an enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: dulldulldulldull Review: For a book that i heard so much about when it was published, i was rather surprised to find how dull it was. it's an interesting subject, but the author just couldn't pull it off.
