Rating: Summary: "The Good the Bad and the Uninspired" Review: Because this book contains many short stories I obviously have mixed feelings about it. The first short story "Strange Highways, which is closer to being a novel, was excellent. It had everything: suspense, action, and twists. I think it is one of Koontz's greatest pieces. The last story "Chase", which was also almost novel length, was excellent as well. However, most of the stories between these two novels were horrible and downright embarrassing. Many of them where from when Koontz was just starting to write(and it shows). The story "The Black Pumpkin" reminds me of something I wrote in fifth grade for a Halloween project. "Bruno" is Koontz's attempt at writing comedy and it succeeds at being the corniest, most childish, waste of thirty-some pages. Most of the rest of the stories are very one dimensional and uninspired. I think this book proves that Koontz should stick to writing novels and steer clear of short stories. I do think that Koontz is a wonderful writer and I have read many of his excellent books, but this isn't one of them. I would definetely recommend reading the first and last stories of this book, just nothing in between.
Rating: Summary: Interesting, frightening, well-written!!! Review: Dean Koontz really deserves credit for his writing skills. In a way, he writes like Stephen King, but unlike King, the beginnings of his books are more interesting which proves it's worth a read. The first story of the book is absolutely brilliant. I don't think it could have been written better. On the other hand, I was a bit disappointed the length of some of the other stories. They weren't long enough. It's the only bad point I could think of. Still, this shouldn't stop you from getting this one!
Rating: Summary: This guy needs a creative writing class Review: I couldn't stand this book. The short stories had endings anyone could see coming from the first couple pages (a little twist at the end, please?!?). Doesn't even compare with Stephen King or Thomas Harris for creepiness or suspense. And he uses the same tired, cliche-ridden phrases over and over. Not for those who actually care about the quality of what they read. I've read better from 8th graders.
Rating: Summary: only one high point! Review: I gave this book a low rating because of the short stories. They are plain, to say the least, and not very inticing. The outcome of the shorter stories is always known before the story is finished. But what dropped this book AT LEAST 2 points is that most of the stories leave you hanging. I thought to myself after incountering one of these "Where is the rest of it?". I did find something that sparked interest in my mind though. The story called "Strange Highways". It is the only one I re-read.
If you have the time to read something mildly interesting, read this. If you have a life to attend to, don't
Rating: Summary: Am I reading Twilight Zone? Review: I just have to say that I'm very happy about my investiment. Most of the stories are great and the rest enjoyable. I know I will read this book more times and re-read most of the stories. If you like The TWILIGHT ZONE STORIES, get my advice, BUY IT!!! I'm sure you won't be desapointed.
Rating: Summary: High points and low points, but worth a look Review: I must admit, DK's collections of short stories and novellas had me extremely rattled at its start; you see, I grew up in the town he describes in the opening story, "Strange Highway". His ability to describe the towns and residents of this sleepy Pennsylvania region was all the more frightening to me because I knew where he was and (to a point) I swear I recognized some for the characters. Trust me, seeing your hometown as the setting for a tale of suspence and terror REALLY makes you look forward to that high school class reunion.
With the opening story as a high point, I sadly report that many of the other stories in the collection were a let down. Not that they are poorly written (because DK can always weave a certain amount of suspence in all his tales) but because the stories have a certain sameness to them. You know where you're going after the first few pages -- the classic problem in suspense short stories.
Still, for the hard core Kootz fans, you won't be disappointed in this collection.
Rating: Summary: I love this! Review: I picked this one up at a yard sale years ago and read it until it was dog-eared. Unfortunately, I've lost my copy. I'm not really a fan of Koontz' novels. I just don't think he's as creative as Stephen King although he is a solid writer. Some of his horror leans towards sci-fi. But in "Strange Highways", Koontz goes all out. 14 haunting, poignant and well written stories that range from sheer horror ("Black Pumpkin") to melodrama ("Twilight of the Dawn") to humor ("Bruno"). The two novellas, "Strange Highways" and "Chase" are very well written indeed. Pick this one up if you can. It'll chill your bones. WooooooOoooooooOOOOOOOOooooh!
Rating: Summary: Great Book, and I don't read Koontz! Review: I thought that this book was very original. My favorite story in the book is Kittens. I don't read Dean Koontz, but my uncle kept telling me about Strange Highways while he was reading it and I was so intrigued that I bought it. I really enjoyed it and I couldn't put it down. I would recommend it to any one who loves the stranger things in life.
Rating: Summary: Loved it! Review: I throughly enjoyed reading Koontz's Strange highways, especially the one about the kittens. It is a great read to see how Koontz was as a writer when he was younger as I think the Kitten one was the first piece of writing he wrote (I'm not too sure about that). It's one of the 'must haves' in your own Koontz collection!
Rating: Summary: Short Stories Show Talent Review: I used to be a Stephen King fan until a friend loaned me this book. I couldn't put it down. After returning it to him, I directly went out and bought a copy for myself. It is as twisted a short story collection as you will ever read. Dean Koontz's talent shines through here as he is capable of making a lasting impression during a few short pages. I have begun reading a few of his novels, but the story collection is by far my favorite.
