Rating: Summary: BORING Review: The Silver Wolf was so-so. At least it got me interested enough to buy Night of the Wolf. But N.O.T.W. is just boring and tedious. She spent so much time describing the snow; the mountains; the endless ponds and lakes; and the food they ate. Almost every other page is about mead; bread and cheese. And she is just all over the place with the plot....I was half way through it and I had to reread the cover to remember what was supposed to be going on. And you truly need to pay attention or you will be completely lost. Several times I had to reread paragraphs or whole pages to figure out where the characters were going. And a few times I noticed she clumsily or purposely dropped some names of Anne Rice's characters in this one---Marius was mentioned once and Rowan was mentioned twice if not three times. First, if I was Anne Rice's sister and I was writing a book with it's foundation based on supernatural lore---I would avoid duplications like that. Secondly, are you telling me her editors didn't pick that up? This book was a waste of time, I'm not picking up the 3rd installment because the premise sounds just as boring.
Rating: Summary: Werewolves at the Fall of Rome Review: This book is a great book about werewolves. These are not those monsters you see in so many books and movies, but powerful and elegant creatures, for the most part anyway. Alice Borchardt's protaganist is Maeniel, a werewolf. This focuses on him and his pack, of which he is the leader. (He is connected to Guinevere the Warrior Queen in Ms. Borchardt's other books.) A great deal of research on ancient Rome was done as well. The details is incredible and sometimes not for the squeamish.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing prequel to Silver Wolf Review: This book is more of a historical novel filled with erotica than a fantasy novel, even though one of the characters can turn into a wolf. Her previous book, "Silver Wolf", seemed more story-driven, while this one just seemed long. I trudged through the whole thing, thinking I would at least learn more about the wolf, but ended up disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant pre-quel to "The Silver Wolf" Review: This is a terrific novel, that blends historical fiction with fantasy and magic. It is a pre-quel to "The Silver Wolf", in that it goes back about 800 years to tell us Maeniel's story. Although he is what could be termed, a 'werewolf', this is in no means your typical werewolf novel. There is no all-out horror as may be expected, but this novel focuses more on drama and human experience, as well as terrific historical detail from the time of Caesar, Cleopatra and Mark Antony. There are also plenty of gory fights and battles. Add to this, the magical scenes...for example, Calpurnia riding off on Pegasus after she has died, and the strange 'other-world' visited by Dryas, and you have what makes for a wonderful absorbing read. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Suprisingly pleasing! Review: To start off, this book was slow or confusing with all the flash-backs in the very begenning<key word[begenning]>.Don't let this make you stop reading whatever you do. The story involving all the characters from Maeniel to Philo, or Dryas becomes engrossing and you will find yourself reading for hours non-stop.This book has a little too many love scenes, and I think we get the point at what Alice Borchardt is trying to accomplish. Although the love story and the way it is told is a pretty good one. The story zaps you in to this 9th century world of politics ,power and pure brutality. After so many pages of reading; you feel for the characters as if not just a story was being told. I reccomend this book for anybody who likes bloody action, love stories, or just wants a a good book to read. Why? you ask. Because this book will suprisingly please you!!!!!!
