Summary: Fast-paced and involving. Highly recommended.
Review:
Parapsychology fans will relish the return of Cree Black, who becomes immersed in a case of spiritual possession which will test all her resources and draw them into a dangerous New Mexican desert confrontation. A talented Navajo student falls ill with violent seizures attributed to the spirit of a dead ancestor, involving Cree in a dangerous world of spreading possession which keeps Land Of Echoes fast-paced and involving. Highly recommended.

Summary: Absolutely 5 stars!!!
Review: As a long time Daniel Hecht fan, I could not wait for this next installment of the Cree Black series, and "Land of Echoes" does not disappoint. Hecht adds several new characters to his already stellar cast (Cree, Edgar, Joyce) and they are excellently rendered. Tommy's plight is fascinating and creepy and heartbreaking. The descriptions of Navajo country and people are beautiful, and easy to imagine, and they provide the loveliness and mystery which defines this book. It is a rich and exciting read. I highly recommend "Land of Echoes"!!!

Summary: Falls short of earlier novels
Review: It's enjoyable. It's an okay read, but it just doesn't have the vision of some of his earlier works i.e Babel Effect.

Summary: cree strikes again! :-)
Review: this second book in the cree black psychological ghost-hunting series is an excellent read. set in the desert mesas of new mexico, its atmosphere is every bit as engaging and visceral as the new orleans of the first cree book, city of masks. one part horror story, one part whodunnit, one part psychological drama, land of echoes will keep you engaged on many levels (and spooked enough to keep the nightlight on). if you liked city of masks, you'll like land of echoes ... and look forward, like i do, to a long succession of cree books over the years to come.

one critique:

i've read four novels by hecht: the two crees, skull, and babel. except for the first cree (city of masks), i've found all his beginnings and endings very engaging, but his middles (from, say, 2/5 to 4/5 of the way through the book) to bog down, lose some of their luster. so if you feel things starting to go a bit ho-hum halfway through land of echoes, keep at it! the last 1/5 or so is very compelling, and you'll be glad you stuck it out.
