Rating: Summary: Only an imbecile could like this book!: rating -10 Review: I was stunned and amazed as I read this novel. Meg is without question the worst thing I have ever read. It is inexcusably awful. I recommend it to nobody. O.J. Simpson was acquitted and Alten got two million bucks for this?! Hell, I've seen better writing on the bathroom wall at the public toilet. What is the world coming to?
Rating: Summary: Get over yourselves, this is good book! Review: There is no doubt that this book is not one of the finest on the market today, yesterday, last month, or last year. Then again, how many are? Perhaps the many people who smashed this book should quit reading all together because I see no way that they can enjoy a fun, entertaining book for what it is--a fun, entertaining book! Alten creates a believable scenario that I thought was too frighteningly real. Does that make me an imbecile? Depends on who you talk to but I say NO. It makes me a person that can sit down and read a fun book with a lot of action in it and be able to overlook the scientific inconsistencies that are throughout because I can remember that this is a FICTIONAL story. Alten's characters were not well formed, but in 288 pages there really isn't much time for character development. Alten gives the reader the satisfaction of seeing the "bad guys" get it in the end the way they are supposed to. I enjoyed this book because that is what it was written for, enjoyment, not scientific analysis. I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Amateur Writing (being charitable) Review: MEG was a fast read, thankfully. The plotline has great potential that is never realized. The book is filled with characters that you never get to know, because the author never creates them in depth. It is filled with scientific and other errors of fact . . . errors not necessary to the story. The errors are very distracting and after awhile, you just read over them with an "oh well" attitude. It has been characterized by other reviewers as a good first book: I disagree. It is amateurish from page one, poorly researched, poorly peopled, --- well you get the idea. Compare this to Grisham's First Book and then say it is a good first effort. And it does not compare at all to Crichton (not even on the same scale with him) or Benchly. (If you really want to read a GOOD book about creatures from the past, read ESAU.) MEG is not worth your time unless there is nothing else. I have read worse, but I never finished them.
Rating: Summary: If you want a good, page-turning thriller, MEG is for you! Review: Okay, it's no Moby Dick, but for a first time author, it is well above average. If you love Peter Benchley or Micheal Critchon, You'll enjoy MEG. It has shades of Jaws and Beast, but to say it is a rip-off of these books is unjust. It is totally it's own work and very creative. I definately recommend this book. Just take it as it is: THRILLING!
Rating: Summary: MEG Review: When I bought this book, I expected it to be another "JAWS" spoof. But when i first opened it, I was amazed with the amount of detail ands info put into it. I was so wound up into the book, that i could'nt put it down, and after 3 shory days of reading, I finished the book, and i was amazed. It had amazing character devlopment, the dialouge was one of the best i ever read. But the ending was the best part of the book. The death of the shark was completley, and i mean completley breathtaking. I recomend this book to any "JAWS" fan, or to any reader at all P.S. What do you do if you see a 6-foot dorsal surface right next to you?
Rating: Summary: IT BITES!!! Review: I was all set to write a scathing review, but after reading all the other nasty comments I almost feel sorry for this book. Almost. I gather that a movie is in the works, and the book reads exactly like a second-rate novelization of a cheezy movie. I would recommend it only to those trapped in broken elevators with no other books.
Rating: Summary: Exceptional plotline Review: Meg is a very good idea for a book. Most of the theories behind it are pretty sound. There were a couple of necessary technical errors regarding some of the animals in the story [tyrannosaurs swam rather well, actually], but it's otherwise an intriguing concept. That's the main plot. The secondary plots were a bit weak, and Alten's writing style and I just didn't get along. For a first book, it was better than it could have been. I'd recommend it in any case. --Gremlin, www.gremlin.net
Rating: Summary: Way Cool! Review: As a fellow new author, I offer these opinions: This prehistoric shark story flows well and is easy to follow. The prose is quite taut: Meg is a quick read with brief, fast-paced chapters; even the dialog has minimal "he/she said" phrases. Human relationships are well portrayed and characters, including the Megalodon, seem real. Action scenes are powerful & vivid. I actually had a nightmare! Bravo! Rating: Summary: Needs work. Review: I liked this book a bit better than my husband did, but I felt the author had a problem with women. It starts out pretty good--at least as believeable as some of the others in the genre, but the end is awfully hard to 'swallow'. And Mr. Alten shouldn't try to put any romantic interest in his writing. It was weak to say the least. But I work the graveyard shift, and it was a good middle of the night read. It went fast and kept me awake. It's currently making the rounds at work, and once my unofficial personal opinion poll is complete, I'll let you know
Rating: Summary: I hope the screenplay is better. Review: I understand the author wrote this with the movie
already in mind. A movie about a very old and
big fish would make a great satire of the "Jaws"
movies, but they can't seriously use this story.
