Rating: Summary: That's entertainment Review: Fun reading. No deep characters, no flawless science, but who need that for entertainment? Recommended.
Rating: Summary: An excellent first novel, based on an original idea Review: I picked up Steve Alten's book "Meg" at 4.25pm, and couldn't put it down until I'd finished it shortly after midnight. The central idea, that a 60-foot-plus, biologically superior shark could be cruising the oceans gripped me from the first couple of pages. It wasn't a perfect book - I thought a couple of elements could have been handled slightly better, but it was an excellent first novel, and with the possibility of a sequel, it's hopefully a sign of good things to come.
Rating: Summary: I can't believe this got published Review: There's no way this piece of crap would have got published, except for the fact that the publishers were hoping to cash in on the Jaws and Jurrasic park successes. This guy couldn't write to save his life. It's hard to imagine something more badly written, but there was. Remember, the published copy has been cleaned up by editors and proofreaders. So how did it read before "the proffesionals" cleaned it up. Awful, awful, awful. Not fun, light, reading, but sheer brain-dead crap.
Rating: Summary: Lower than a Megalodons excrement Review: FINALLY!! A book that sets the ultimate standard. One that defines the limit!! Most probably the worst book written in any language. I used to give a book 1/2-point for being written in English, however, this one gets 1/2-point subtracted for that very same reason. It is an embarrassment to literature. I have nightmares that sometime in the far-future the only book left to define our current cultural standards will be this turd. Five of eight of our bookclub members gave it the lowest possible score, one gave it the second lowest possible score, and the other two were middle-of-the-road. I find it hard to believe that ANY publisher would print this book. There were not only simple contextural errors, but also errors in paleontology, geology (North American subduction!), Naval terminology, SCUBA physiology, and ohhhh, such pitiful story lines (Jims surf scene, Terrys flying, Maggies entrance, Hellers anger, Jonas in a shark stomach at 600 feet).
Rating: Summary: GREAT!!!!!! Very realistic. A more thrilling Jaws Review: I think this book was great. I WANTED TO READ IT OVER AND OVER. If you like horror , thriller, adventure and mystery you're in for a treat. Great story. So many possibilities
Rating: Summary: to all the detractors .. loosen your JAWS and relax Review: OK its not the best thing on the rack .. but it was quick fun and entertaining ... a great afternoon on the beach type read ( which is what I did ) I thought the premise of a 60 foot shark was far
fetched ... that was until I saw an actual picture
of 8 scientist sitting inside the skeletal mouth of
one of these things ...
I subsequently did some research via internet searches and found out that they grew upwards of 100 feet ..... glad they're still not around ...
So as for the book ... it was light reading and enjoyable .... take it for what its worth

Rating: Summary: Check it out from the library for a quick, fun read. Review: MEG was a bit of a disappointment after all the "hoop-la" in the promotion of the book. But, looking back, it was a actually a break from any heavy reading. You just kept in mind that this was fiction, not fact. Best bet is to get it from the library, though, this is not a book to keep in your collection of classics and "I will read agains."
Rating: Summary: MEG short on plausible details... Review: Good premise and fascinating subject, but was ruined by very poor research/advice about Navy operations, submarines and even something as simple as rank/rate for Navy characters. Too bad. One hour of conversation with a Navy veteran could have saved the author from a lot of mistakes.
Rating: Summary: Lighten-up Review: Ok.....so this isn't "Gone With The Wind", but who says every novel has to be. It's a quick, fun read with alot of action. It's a good break for a couple of hours.
Rating: Summary: Meg should be a made for TV movie of the week! Review: While I was overjoyed in finding a book in the bookstore that combines both my favorite films, Jaws and Jurassic Park, Mr. Alten should have never bothered publishing the book. It's slow and tedious at the beginning with so much "fake" scienctific jargon it almost crawls off the pages! If people honestly feel this book will sell like hotcakes on the big screen I think they are in for a big suprise! How big of a success was "The Lost World" after Jurassic Park? Not a big one so why should this be? Sounds like another sequel to Jaws. Give it up already.
