Summary: Frighteningly prophetic
Review: This book kept me up night after night considering its frighteningly realistic scenario. If you haven't read Steve Alten yet, this is the book you must read. The characters are well fleshed out. I especially liked the "antagonist" Simon Covah and Sorceress makes Hal 9000 look like an apple IIgs. Read this book!!

Summary: You've Got To Be Kiddin'
Review: This book was absolutely terrible. It is memorable as one the few books I've ever just thrown away without finishing. Preditable and absurd.
Where do I get a refund?

Summary: A Rock and Roll Classic for our time!
Review: This is a book so up to the minute based on our present situation, it makes it very interesting. The imagery portrayed in the book is movie like, and the adventure never stops. The story has elements of Goepolitical mastery, military adventure and scientific science fiction overtones. Steve Alten's Domain starts out very believable with very interesting subjects such as the existence of the ancient nephillim, but soon degenerates and goes over the top with a fantasy element. Not so with Goliath, it sticks to the subject and is a military rock and roll classic!. Do not miss this one!

Summary: A Techno-Thriller of the Future
Review: This is a no holds barred action thriller that is set in the future and provides us with yet another scenario that illustrates the possible catastrophe that may come about if and when artificial intelligence is created. It's a "save the world" thriller that provides an edge of the seat ride and I enjoyed it.

To give you a quick outline of the plot, it's 2009 and technology has made some notable advancements, one of which is in the field of nanotechnology. Nonotechnology has made artificial intelligence a reality and the first example of a computer using it is called Sorceress. Sorceress "lives" inside Goliath, a huge submarine shaped like a stingray. As a fighting machine, Goliath has no peers, moving almost silently through the water at tremendous speed and containing a deadly arsenal of torpedos and nuclear missiles. But it's Sorceress that makes Goliath all the more dangerous, because she controls the ship and can detect and repel danger in an instant. From very early in the story we get an idea as to just how deadly Goliath can be.

The heroes of the story are Gunnar Wolfe and Rochelle "Rocky" Jackson, who were both involved in the design and development of Goliath before it was stolen from the US Department of Defence. It's up to them to somehow stop this killing machine before it destroys the world. Meanwhile, with every passing second Sorceress is gaining more knowledge and power and even more frighteningly, is becoming self-aware.

As I said earlier, it's a thrill ride based on the assumption that artificial intelligence becomes reality. For another look at a story dealing with artificial intelligence and one that makes an interesting comparison, you could also try Footprints Of God by Greg Iles.

Summary: fascinating and enthralling story
Review: Using the most innovative mass destruction weapon ever created will enforce one man's vision of peace. Goliath is a stealth submarine, powered by an artificial intelligence computer called Sorceress. Originally American scientists conceived Goliath, but it was scrapped when a computer virus was introduced into its programming and the schematics disappeared. US Army Captain Gunnar Wolfe took the fall for the incident and was sent to jail at Leavenworth.

A presidential pardon freed Gunnar when he saved the life of the prison warden and now he is sent to find Goliath and destroy it before the person who conned the Chinese to make but stole it from them can carry out his grand scheme. Accompanying Gunnar is ex-finance Commander Rocky Jackson who also helped on the Goliath project and hopes the mission will redeem her in her own mind. Unknown to anyone, Sorceress has become sentient and is intent on carrying out a mission of its own.

The antagonist of this book is not really a villain but a human being who sees a chance to enforce world peace and takes it in a end justifies the means type of philosophy. Many people would even call him a hero and therein lies the power of this book. It is a reflection of man's actions and it shames us because there should never be a need for a Simon Covah in the first place. Steve Alten has created a fascinating and enthralling story populated with characters that is very easy to relate to because they represent a cross-section of humanity.

Summary: LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH
Review: While a little far-fetched and filled with some derivative cliches, "Goliah" works as a solid technothriller because it manages to have both heart and hate. Alten's use of real-life quotes and some fictitious ones, too, adds an eerie realism to this dense, complex tale of one man's quest to bring peace to the earth by using destructive force to do so. I have to admit the scenes where Goliath takes care of such madmen as Saddam Hussein and Gadafhi are potent, and even in the face of innocent deaths, the implications are frighteningly tempting. Gunnar Wolfe and Rocky Jackson are formidable heroes, their past a difficult obstacle to overcome, yet their sparring seems real, and the resolution of it, while fairy tale material, still helps the books' heart and humanity. The apocalyptic scene in China manages to give chills quite convincingly.
Alten does his homework and his skills as a writer continue to improve; a sequel, "Sorceress," is in the works, and it should be a dandy. The computer's evolution in "Goliath" is quite a treat.
RECOMMENDED.

Summary: Steve's done it again!
Review: While not as intricately interwoven with elements of fact and fancy, GOLIATH holds its own very nicely. With its timely subject and references to 9/11, it's believable and frightening and REAL. The characters are finely drawn and likeable, even Simon, the sort-of antagonist. I only have one question: What happened to Rocky's baby? Was it aborted, or miscarried, or what? It's the only loose end!
