Rating: Summary: Icebound Review: I thought the book was really interesting about people risking their lives doing dangerous job. These characters in Icbound were very educated people, they all had special talent and they love their jobs even though it was dangerous.
Rating: Summary: Icebound Review: I thought it was very suspenseful but far fetched. It didnt sound believable in any way to me. But, I thought it was good reading for a rainy day.
Rating: Summary: Icebound left me cold! Review: As an avid reader of Dean Koontz' novels, I was more than a little disappointed as I "plowed" my way through this tepid "ice-venture". Koontz has always been great at character development and creating gut-churning suspenseful plots, but with "Icebound", he came up about 25 blocks short of an igloo.Granted, it was a quick read, but very predictable and basically lifeless. The characters were tough to like and even harder to figure out at times. What's the deal with George Lin, anyway? And, way too much time was spent dissecting the problems of the Russian submarine commander. Hopefully, this won't be your first venture into the world of Dean Koontz because the man is a great writer! Dont' let this book stop you from reading some of his "classics". The list is long, but I definitely recommend "Watchers", "Strangers" (The Dean Koontz version of "The Stand"), "Mr. Murder", "Shattered" "Whispers" and "The Servants of Twilight". Any of these terrific "reads" are a great way to start your Koontz collection. Not every hit can be a home run, can it, Deano?
Rating: Summary: Farfetched and dull Review: In this novel's defense it moves very quickly. On the other hand the whole concept of drilling an iceberg for freshwater (though intriguing) in my mind falls on its collective rear end. The characters are all very cardboard, you feel like you know them within the first few pages because the author describes them and they behave according to stereotypes. Finally...the rescue with the submarine? Please. I also was quite surprised the bombs did not have a fuse that could be set off by a pulse or whatever...but I suppose it becomes more intriguing this way. I had not read any Dean Koontz before this novel and it is not encouraging me to start. Please do yourself a favour and avoid it.
Rating: Summary: Ice-cap thriller Review: The book seems to be written according to the mystery/thriller recipe. I knew in advance what would happen next, precisely because, having read a few thrillers, I happen to know the recipe according to which this book was written. Snip: (...)
Rating: Summary: Icebound to GREAT reading! Review: This was one of my first Dean Koontz books. Wow, what a great story! Koontz is able to totally transport you to a different place and environment without missing a heartbeat. This is no exception! I liked his story line of icebound scientists with a murderer on the loose, on a floating piece of ice, nevertheless! It kept me guessing right to end, that's the mark of a great storyteller. He didn't give anything away, and the excitement and danger was never-ending! If you like action thriller, murder mystery, suspense type of books, you love this book! If you like me who want's the suspense to continue throughout the whole book, read this book. You'll enjoy this book. It has a great twist at the end, this book will catch you, sink line and hook!
Rating: Summary: A Bit Slow Review: This book was a bit slow to get into but im glad that i carried on reading. Icebound is (once the first chapter has finished) a fast paced action book about a group of scientists who find them selves trapped on ice with an explosive charge. With all these goings on they also have to deal with the fact that there is also a murder amongst them. This book is worth reading, although i thought it wasn't the best book that i have read i still bought it as it is one worth having in my collection as im sure it will be in yours
Rating: Summary: Arctic thriller Review: This is the first by Koontz I've read, and I do agree that he has a great style, especially with pacing and suspence. This story of Arctic researchers stranded on an iceberg with a timebomb, as well as a psychotic killer, is quite fun, but I felt it was almost stereotypical. I didn't figure out who the killer was, but I fairly knew it would all end well. Granted, this book was originally published in 1976 (under the title "Prison of Ice"), so it's a bit dated, but still. It's an exciting read, and for mind-candy it's quite great. Even though I was unimpressed by this book, I will definitely read others by Koontz because his style is quite compelling, and that was what I was captivated by while reading.
Rating: Summary: Not as Good as it could have been... Review: A group of scientists drill bombs into the Antarctic in order to blow a chunk of ice out and let it travel away for scientific reasons and experiments. But, an unexpected disaster occurs and soon the scientists find themselves stranded on an Iceberg with bombs planted beneath them ready to explode. While considering ways of escape which prove to be useless, a Russian Submarine patrolling the area decides to rescue them. Soon, one of the scientists is attacked from behind and left for dead, and it becomes clear that there is a psychopathic killer amongst them. To be honest, the plot was the main attraction which drew me into reading this novel. But, I'm sorry to say that KOONTZ could have and should have formed a more interesting novel with the above *plot skeletons*. The story tends to lag in numerous places and if it wasn't for the decent ending it wouldn't be exciting at all. The sub-plot of the *psycho* was the only interesting aspect in this otherwise cold, average "market" novel. Note: It was published by Koontz under another name many years ago - you wouldn't be too suprised either.
Rating: Summary: another koontz classic Review: i inhale this guy's books, and this one is no different. he does such an amazing job of setting the arctic scene that i was cold just reading it. my own complaint was that a good whodunit should give you clues as to who the villain is, whereas this time, there was only one. otherwise, i'd recommend it!
